Don't use anti-seize on NGK spark plugs
2
Ran across an interesting article while researching plug for my Jaguar XKR, but it applies to our Lotus cars as well https://ngksparkplugs.com/en/resources/5-things-you-should-know-about-spark-plugs 1. Anti-seize NGK spark plugs feature trivalent plating. This silver or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without lubrication or anti-seize. Anti-seize can act as a lubricant, altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage and/or metal shell stretch. Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental. 2. Corona stain Corona stain is a light brown or tan discoloration on the outside of the ceramic insulator above the metal shell/hex. Corona stain is created by the high voltage traveling thru the plug that attracts the dirt or oil particles surrounding the exposed ceramic insulator between the wire/coil boot and spark plug metal shell. Corona stain is completely normal and should not be mistaken for exhaust gas blow-by or a broken seal inside the spark plug. 3. Gapping fine-wire spark plugs While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap. If the gap must be adjusted, use a tool that only moves the ground electrode and does not pry between or against the electrodes. NGK also recommends adjusting the gap no more than +/- 0.008¡± from the factory preset gap. 4. Torque Torque is crucial in the ability of the plug to dissipate heat and perform properly. Always follow the manufacturer recommended torque specification. An under-torqued spark plug can lead to excessive vibration and improper heat dissipation, causing spark plug and/or engine damage. Over torquing may cause any of the following: thread damage/breakage, compromised internal seals leading to gas leakage, metal shell stretch leading to poor heat dissipation and pre-ignition. 5.¡°Copper spark plugs¡± ¡°Copper spark plugs¡± is a term often used to describe a standard material spark plug. However, this terminology is incorrect, as standard material plugs do not have electrodes made from copper. Copper is soft with a low melting point and cannot be used for electrodes, as they would wear very quickly. A standard material spark plug uses a nickel-alloy that may include a small copper core. The copper core has nothing to do with the electrical performance of the spark plug. A copper core is used to increase heat dissipation and durability by lowering the electrode temperatures. Nearly all NGK spark plugs, including precious metal iridium and platinum plugs, have a copper core to increase the electrode durability. Special nickel alloys, platinum, and iridium electrodes, along with copper cores are all used to enhance durability ¨C durability meaning how long a spark plug will last before it needs to be replaced.

Mounting Sun Visors
11
Can anyone advise how sun visors are mounted? Previous owner reupholstered the header and covered all the mounting holes. I also do not have any hardware - just the visors. So I need advise on how they are mounted (pics would help). I looked at the shop manual and there really isn't any good diagrams. This is for my S1. Thanks Rob in Monterey 78 S1

9XX Valve Stem Height
Does anyone know the Lotus factory spec for the valve stem height in: 1) the Lotus 9XX cylinder heads (907, 910, 911, 912, 920)? 2) the Lotu Twin Cam Ford cylinder heads? In the attached Jpeg, dimension 'A' (lower right corner) is just an example of what I'm after (it's for a Porsche 911).

Coolant sprayed from under passenger side dash - likley source
6
Dropped my son off at school and on drive home had sudden gush of coolant followed by steam on the passenger side below the dash. Glad my son was dropped off or he might had been scalded. Anyway, was able to get home and spend yesterday removing carpet and drying the passenger compartment. Before I assume the lotus position and investigate, any ideas of likely cause - this is my 78 S1? Is the weak point hosing or the heater valve? Also do you suspect I could tackle from below or need to access from within the front spare tire area? Thanks Rob in Monterey - 78 S1

Refinishing Wolfrace wheels
10
I'd like to have my Wolfrace wheels refinished as the clear coat has yellowed and oxidation has occurred in areas where the clear coat has lifted from the aluminum. I have tentively selected a wheel refinisher, but I'm a bit reluctant to have it done as it will require machining of the surface. Has anyone had their Wolfrace wheels refinished and is there anything to be concerned about? As a note, the wheels are in otherwise perfect condition with not a single nick to any of the rims. Thanks, Jeff

Head Gasket vs Quench
4
Hello, Trying to get ducks in a row for purchase of engine components, I gather the consensus view favours the composite HG over the earlier laminated metal. Has anyone given thought to what the added .020" compressed thickness does to squish/quench characteristics of the chamber? Perhaps pertinently, why did Lotus need HG's of varying laminations with the introduction of the 912? Steve

SM World
Is anyone familiar with SM World's business status? Jerry Hathaway was a Citroen specialist north of LA (Santa Clara area), and a resource for rebuilding the 1976-88 Esprit's Citroen 5-spd transaxle. I only recently heard that Jerry passed away last September. I've tried to call the business number, but there's no answer. 26950 Furnivall Ave, Canyon Country Ca. 91351 Memorium: https://citroenvie.com/in-memoriam-jerry-hathaway/ Regards, Tim Engel

Side windows...

Whilst I'm here... And not to crash the Group Billing topic... How am I supposed to get the bottom metal plate, held on by two screws, off when it glued down? Pushing up on the screw thread from underneath isn't helping much.

Does anyone know if there is a cross reference/other make for a source for the side marker/reflectors on the S1? This is for a US car. Thx

Let's Talk Tires
18
It's time to talk tires again. I brought this up on FB a while ago, and TonyK recommended Federal SS657, 205/60/14 front and 215/65/14 rear. DavidL added that you can go with a 215/60/14 (presumably on the rear). I checked my S1 and I've been driving on 195/60/14 front & rear since I've owned it. I did some searching on Tire Rack, Performance Plus Tire, Online Tires, eBay, and Amazon. Lots of options for 205/60. Nothing for 215/65 anywhere. Only a couple of options for 215/60: 205/60/R14 - Federal SS657; Accelera PHI R; Nankang SP-9; Otani KC2000; Petlas Imperium; Zeetex ZT3000; Waterfall Eco Dynamic 215/65/R14 - Nothing nowhere no how 215/60/R14 - BF Goodrich Radial TA; Raptor HR Considering that mixing tires front-to-rear is not advisable, it would appear my only option would be to run Federal SS657 205/60's all around. Would that be okay? Are there options I'm not seeing or considering? -- Toaph
