REX Exact Scale 27
So I got a Gondola from a friend for $20 that wasn¡¯t in its original box. Neither of us could figure out who made it at first. After I did some digging around the internet I found it was made by REX or some of you know them by Putt Trains. The gon is fairly well detailed for its time. Here are some pictures. The last two pictures are from the internet.

Plastic paint striping 26
There have always been modelers asking what to use for stripping paint from plastic models. I have tried so many techniques using everything from brake fluid to Scalecoat stripper. I have been successful over the years using products such as Simple Green, Goof Off and Isopropyl alcohol but everything is just a crap shoot hopping it will work. Awhile back I took on a plastic diesel job. Not to my liking but I wanted to help out a friend. He has two of the same locos that he wants painted and lettered. The issue is one was painted by some other painter that he tried and put the wrong colors on the loco. The other is still in its factory paint scheme. I needed to strip both of them and start over. I tried all the usual stripping products and nothing touched either model. The 91% alcohol did soften and make sticky but really needed to soak forever and scrub very hard to the point of damaging the model shell. I went to a hobby shop that is not really trains but cators to the plastic model guys and all the other stuff that is needed to keep them in business. They sold me a bottle of paint stripper for plastic, and I bought it with hesitation. It is called AK 185. I read the reviews and everyone said it was nothing more than alcohol. They are wrong. This stuff really works. I keep 91% in a spray bottle and started with it first. Again, it would not touch what ever that first model was painted with or its decals. I tried a small spot inside the shell, and it darn near wiped the factory color off in one wipe. I used it on the aftermarket paint and with a toothbrush I was able to get all the way down to the factory shell with not much work or worry. I then tried it on the next shell with just a factory paint job, and it removed all the lettering and color down to the shell by wiping it with a paper towel. Just recently I used brake fluid on one of my own PRS box cars I painted over 20 years ago and destroyed it. Run fast, Run hard from using brake fluid. I wish I knew about this stuff then. 3D printed Buckeye trucks 3
Hello all, I had been looking for buckeye trucks for a DODX flatcar project and some other heavy duty flatcars that I would like to do. While searching I found a gentleman on eBay who was 3D printing them in HO scale. I asked him if he would be willing to scale his trucks up to 1/64 and he agreed to take on the project. I sent him measurements of a regular American Models truck to help him scale up his design. The first set I got from him where a little wide by 2.2 mm. He reprinted them for no extra charge. He is a great communicator with great customer service skills. Included are some photos of the trucks that I received from him. I put some spare scale S scale America wheels sets that I have. They roll really smoothly. It looks like they are printed using resin. If you are interested in getting some for yourself here is the link to the listing on his website: http://earnesttrains.com/shop/ols/products/164-scale-buckeye-three-axle Currently this is the only thing that he has in S-scale. I was going to see if he could do some BX high speed express trucks. Regards, David Henley

AM FM Trainmaster 21
After Shapeways has passed away it seems I have to install my kadee couplers the regular way for the time being. The model was designed in a time when there was only Kadee #5 available. For free movement of the trucks I'd prefer to use the small SHS couplers. Having no coupler gauge here in Germany I ask myself if the coupler height will be correct or if I need an additional shim. Has someone done the conversion on the Trainmaster recently and remembers how it went? It IS a beautiful Diesel and deserves to come with scale couplers. Next challenge will be the installment of a DCC decoder. Greetings from Middle Franconia, Hans

Stony Smith Designs Hopper
In my previous response about this hopper car, I completely missed that entry. Sorry about that. To John Mann: Yes, it was a design by Stony Smith Designs. I have it listed on the NASG web site: https://www.nasg.org/Gallery/reports/Hoppers/ByManufacturer/indexStony_Smith_Designs(notset)steel,_fishbelly,_cylindrical,_single-bay,_center_discharge.php The good news is that he has moved some of his designs over to the 3DP Train web site: https://3dptrain.com/pages/vendor-profile/stony-smith-designs-484625 He doesn't list that S-scale hopper, but it might just be that he hasn't gotten any requests for it, or hasn't made it available on the 3DP Train site. Plug door improvements. 2
I just ran into this article on improving an HO car, much of it is applicable to the AM plug door car (or adding plug doors to the standard AM boxcar if you want the rivets without using decal rivets). We could use a source of steel ice hatches and a few other parts. Pieter Roos

Another AM door
I bought a group of abused cars I probably should not have. 1 of the best shape cars was a American Models Railbox that was missing a door. I did not have a list of parts I wanted to get from AM but that would have been easiest¡. So 5 hours of Solidworks and 4 prints later I got the door I wanted only to make sure it is facing the inside of the layout anyway. That was easy! Rail Joiners for S-Helper Flex Track 12
Just thought I would ask this group if anyone knows what might work the best for rail joiners, since Fox Valley are Sold Out at this time. I'm looking for Rail Joiners for S-Helper / MTH code 138 Flex Track that will be used with Fox Valley Switches. I was looking on eBay and found 3 different rail joiners that might work. I want the Silver unpainted ones so I can solder wires to them if needed. [1] Peco PL-10 said they fit HO / O scale code 100 Track, [2] Guy in Florida goes by antbocc_50 has O Scale rail joiners for code 125 & 148 track, [3] Micro Engineering 26-100 rail joiners. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks John

Speaking of S-scale Trucks... 11
Since we have been talking about "big rigs", here's a new web site for y'all: https://modelmechanic.net/ The Model Mechanic, Steve Nasburg, used to sell a bunch of S-scale big-trucks-related 3D-printed items via the obsolete Shapeways. He has now started his own web site, has listed all of his items, and can print them to-order. All items are available in HO ("87th"), S ("64th"), and 1:50 scale ("50th"). See the "FAQ" for how to place an order. Laser Horizons PRR Passenger Car Sides
Jerry Britton has a page on his web site that, as of May 2011, Dennis of Laser Horizon was able to produce these sides for PRR-based cars: https://jbritton.pennsyrr.com/index.php/tpm/368-laser-horizons-passenger-car-sides One could presume that if he has those drawings, he'd be able to scale them up to S, or make others for other railroads that had similar cars. As an aside, Dennis is the president of the Sebring Model Railroad Club (HO-scale) in Sebring, Ohio and the local paper did a report on him and the club this past November: https://www.cantonrep.com/story/lifestyle/family/2024/11/19/sebring-model-trains-railroad-club-open-house-2024/76253072007/ - Peter. -- Peter Vanvliet (info@...) owner, Fourth Ray Software Houston, Texas https://fourthray.com/ https://pmrr.org/ (personal web site)

Exacta 80' HW Coach 11
For years I've had a really nice set of etched bronze HW coach sides packed away in a box for one of those "just in case" moments. I rediscovered them last week and, thanks to Peter and the NASG website, learned that they were from a 1947 offered Exacta kit. These are well detailed etched bronze sides/ends (with solder backing) that when combined with an American Models roof and a detailed scratch-built underbody with AM trucks make into a really nice and unique S scale offering. Thanks to BTS, Pre-Size and TrainStuff for these underbody details. The attached photos show these sides and ends pretty well. I still need to paint and add diaphragms to complete the car Bob Hogan

Laser Horizons 7
On Friday I went out to Harrisburg for the PRRT&HS Annual Meeting. It was at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey, site of the last two NASG conventions, so I went around and said hello to all my friends on the staff there. But the real reason for this post is that I also ran into Dennis Sautters of Laser Horizons, recently discussed on this list. He is, of course, alive and kicking. He said he is still in business and very willing to cut passenger car sides for people. He doesn't have a website, but you can email him at laserhiz@.... (He said that way back when he started, AOL had a character limit for addresses, so he couldn't spell out "horizons".) He is cognizant of the fact that S scale passenger cars come from different manufacturers, and are therefore slightly different sizes, so be sure to tell him what model you want to apply the sides to. He also offers sides in two thicknesses if you want to overlay the old sides (thin) or replace old sides (thick). (My personal recommendation would be to overlay the sides on an American Models car and replace the sides on a Chester, JC Models car.) I will add that the usual disclaimer applies.
