Mopac AM Baldwin S12 steam era 13
As I have been working on this personal project I am working with my connection to make decals for this model. I will have a sheet of silver to fill thus making a high cost to me for just one set for this project or wait a while for my buddy to fill it with his projects. Is there anybody else out there wanting to decorate a MPL S12 for the steam era that would like to by some? If not I will wait to fill up the sheet with my buddy. -- Mike Swederska Meramec Valley Lines Modeling Mopac equipment in 3/16 https://www.youtube.com/@mikesscale3149 Don't let perfection get in the way of good enough! Latest News from B.T.S. 3
Howdy Y'all I¡¯m rapidly approaching the end of my 46th year in the hobby business. Year 47 starts in July and I greatly appreciate all of you who have been with me on this interesting journey. After a lot of pondering, I have decided to hang around for another year . . . maybe two. I¡¯ve got too many promised projects that need to be finished to stop now. That¡¯s the good news. More good news is that y¡¯all are keeping me very busy cutting, packing, and shipping product. Extremely appreciated! With over 500 kits in production, I'm still getting most orders out the door within a day or two. And even more good news is as I write this, the glue is drying on the sample builds of two C&O Quinnimont structures in O scale, a logging kit for S scale, and a couple more businesses for Cabin Creek in HO. More parts to proof as I finish the sample builds and instructions to write, but they will be released soon. And CAD work for an On2 Box Car is coming along nicely. Now on to the bad news . . . over the next few months I will be reevaluating the pricing on most of the kits. Many have not had a price increase in well over a decade, some multiple decades, and you know what has happened to costs . . . especially over the last four years. Hate to do it, but things cannot continue as is. And it is past time to evaluate the shipping structure. When I set the $5.00 flat rate back in 2001, it covered a large percentage of the USPS Priority Mail fees for the average shipment. Not even close today. So rather than spring this on you as a ¡®done deal,¡¯ you have been alerted and now have the opportunity to pick up more kits at the current price and shipping levels. My goal is to have the new price structure in place by the end of Summer if not before. On a slightly different subject, I just published my third Fair Winds novel. Getting three military crime fiction books written in just over four years ain¡¯t bad for an old guy. Fair Winds of Doubt takes place in West Virginia and features Commander Colt getting involved with a local murder spree in his hometown. Both the Virginian and Norfolk And Western rail lines are mentioned. Take a look when you get a chance . . . https://www.wadepublishing.com/fairwindsofdoubt.htm And to squash a few nasty rumors, I work at B.T.S. 6.5 days a week and do the book writing late in the evenings; my writing, an escape mechanism from the stress of life, does not impact B.T.S. BTW ¨C if all my B.T.S. customers purchased this new book next week, it could make the NY Times Best Seller List. ? Again, thanks for your support and keep having fun with our hobby. SSL&S boiler front
The boiler front for the Pennsy K5 was 90" diameter, same as on the PRR I1 decapod. Substantially larger than those on the K4's and I'm not sure what diameter those were in actuality. Bud Rindfleisch

Can someone ID this loco, and tell us the builder? It appears to be mostly a SSLS build, with a lot of embellishments. It's a beautiful job. Tommy

Steam fix of the day 3
You guys really haven't been putting anything up to read lately so I have been watching YouTube videos for lunch. I got my steam fix this morning running a Mountain passenger train and a Heavy Mikado freight. But there is nothing like watching a good steam video such as this one. I do have this DVD when they first introduced the video. I am posting this only because of the talk about the SSL&S Berkshire kits. Both of these featured locomotives can be built with the kit. BTW my warning to all my heavily weathered dirty steam friends out there you may not want to watch these sweet locos as they are the way I like them. Nice and clean. Oh and that goes for all you diesel guys if you watch this video, you might want to put your diesels on the shelf and start main lining steam. https://youtu.be/SXJ9eKwYSpU?si=xLMWMWvp6GVWsTwm -- Mike Swederska Meramec Valley Lines Modeling Mopac equipment in 3/16 https://www.youtube.com/@mikesscale3149 Don't let perfection get in the way of good enough! Q-4 (was Who done it? 4
If the S scale market were larger, a Q-4 would have been a logical commercial project. Somewhere I have a series of articles (from the 1/64" magazine?) by ________ (the well-known late modeler whose railroad has been preserved at a western Pennsylvania museum); I vaguely remember it probably used SSL&S parts. The instructions are out there, for anyone who wants a Q-4, although at my age I probably won't be among them. If all else fails read the directions......
I now have a mixture of fluorescent fixtures with ballasts and a few direct wire without ballasts. You need specific tubes for both - no 1 size fits all. The direct wire fixtures are really an empty box just to hold the tombstones. And they are not wired like I thought. For the direct wire LED tubes all wires from one end go to white and all wires from the other end go to black. Luckily nothing bad happened to 6 tubes when I had them wired wrong. I added 8 feet more of lighting here over the engine house. (Closest on the right and farthest on the left) It is a main scene of the layout. Changing to LEDs and adding more light here is very noticeable. No comparison to what it was. I am going to ballast the track while I have it cleared out. SSL&S Hudson Instruction booklet and inventory sheet 2
Some have asked for copies of the SSL&S AF/Hudson Conversion Instructions and Parts list. I started a while back to copy the faded mimeographed instructions but got distracted and never finished them. Dug them out a few days ago and finished them up. Trying to keep the original flavor of the instructions (including grammatical errors) I have copied them verbatim. The sketches included are tracings of the originals copied and pasted into the document as close to the original as I could get them. Along with my work I am including the SSL&S Third Edition Parts Installation Booklet that I think was uploaded by Chris Rooney a few years back. Hope this is helpful for anyone going down this road. -- Rob Fuhst Grand Haven, MI
