Acid Mothers Temple in NYC 3/23/02 & Mojo question
I'm going to see Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. for the 1st time tomorrow night at the Knitting Factory in NYC. The show is on the "ShortList" in the current Village Voice. Here's what Chuck Eddy has to say about them:
Today's Japanese acid-rock revival is a droning ritual of offhand eclecticism and eternal repetition a la Germany 30 years ago; while guitar genius Kawabata Makoto's traveling Nagoya commune might not match the pastoral beauty of Ghost or Angel'in Heavy Syrup, they're still the heavy legends of the bunch, and way more pastorally beautiful than their inspirations Blue Cheer or the Mothers of Invention ever were. If you'd had a chance to see Amon Duul in 1970, you would've gone, right?
There was a review of an AMT gig in the UK about 2 or 3 issues back in Mojo in which Kawabata was favorably compared to Hendrix. Needless to say, I'm very excited about this show, which cost me a grand total of $11 including service charge. Is anyone else going?
Bill Tired Eyes
PS I just bought Mojo 100 last night, which has at least 3 Neil references. Am I the only one, or are other USA rusties not able to buy this as early each month as they used to?

Emmylou/Lanois Bridge 1995 Grovel (minimal NC)
Besides Neil, I'm a big Daniel Lanois fan, and among others, his excellent collaboration with Emmylou Harris on "Wrecking Ball." Is there someone out there who would trade/B&P their set at the 1995 Bridge benefit? (if a disc contained any of Neil's tunes (esp. DBTR w/Brooooce) that would be a plus!)
Besides a decent collection of other stuff, for trade I've got a very nice BBC broadcast of Emmylou w/Lanois Band in London 1995 ("Orphan Girl" boot), and a couple of Lanois live discs. (Come to think of it, if anyone's got OTHER 1995 "Wrecking Ball" shows, or live Lanois, to trade, I'd be up for that too!).
Thanks, Alok

U.S. Postal Rates To Increase ( NNC )
Postal Rates Set for Summer Increase The Associated Press Mar 22 2002 8:19AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - The post office appears headed for a midsummer rate increase - perhaps 3 cents more to mail a letter - after winning near-unanimous agreement from businesses and organizations that usually fight vigorously to prevent higher postal rates.
Without the usual opposition, the independent Postal Rate Commission gave speeded-up consideration to the Postal Service's request for new rates.
The commission was issuing its decision Friday.
Under the Postal Service proposal, which could take effect as early as June 30, the cost of a first-class stamp would rise 3 cents to 37 cents, a 2-cent boost would put the rate for post cards at 23 cents, and most other charges would also go up.
Battered by declining business in a slow economy, the post office lost $1.68 billion last year and was anticipating a $1.35 billion loss this year after freezing new construction and cutting 12,000 jobs.
The agency announced Sept. 11 it would seek higher rates to take effect this fall.
Then the terror attacks, followed by the anthrax-by-mail infections, socked the agency with hundreds of millions of dollars in additional costs for cleanup and preventing future mail contamination.
Knowing that would plunge the post office into even worse financial straits, Rate Commission Chairman George Omas suggested the post office and 60 or so organizations that usually fight it out over rates to reach an agreement all could accept.
In the end all but the American Postal Workers Union signed on to the deal, which avoided months of hearings and arguments before the agency and permitted the rapid rate decision.
The union, which represents workers who sort mail, argued that the rate increases offered giant mailers discounts for presorting mail that exceed the amount the Postal Service would save by not doing that work.
The post office responded the contention was fallacious, ``based on speculation regarding postal revenues, finances and capital investment plans.''
Organizations that would benefit from the discounts defended them. ``The settlement rates are well within lawful limits,'' argued a group including the Association for Postal Commerce, the Mailing and Fulfillment Service Association and the Recording Industry Association of America.
While many that normally oppose rate increases accepted this one, it was not always cheerfully.
Longtime rival United Parcel Service said that while it ``could find fault with a number of the rates set forth in the settlement,'' it joined in the agreement to help the post office ``respond to recent extraordinary events and return to financial stability.''
One group of businesses commented that if the case had been fully argued, its members would have fought for different rates.
``The settlement agreement represents, we believe, the best result that is possible to achieve under current circumstances,'' said the group, which included the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers, AOL Time Warner, Coalition of Religious Associations, Magazine Publishers of America and the National Newspaper Association.
``However,'' the group added, ``the circumstances themselves - the need for so much additional revenue so soon after the last two rate increases, based on estimates developed prior to Sept. 11, 2001 - reflect poorly on the Postal Service.''
In addition to the 37-cent rate for the first ounce of first-class mail, other increases requested by the post office include:
Increase the postcard rate 2 cents to 23 cents.
A 1-pound priority mail item would rise 35 cents to $3.85.
Increases in parcel post, with a 5-pount item costing $4.19 to $7.25 now, depending on distance, would rise to $5.03 to $9.43.
A half-pound Express Mail item would jump $1.20 to $13.65.
Certified mail would increase 20 cents to $2.30.
Insurance charges would go up for most mail, depending on amount of insurance, but would be reduced for Express Mail.
The charge for a return receipt would go up 25 cents to $1.75.

Dave, What might be happening is EAC is looking at the wrong disc player/device. Near the top-left, [on my version anyways] there is a select box with a dropdown list that includes all your CD drives [I have a regular CDReader and a CWWriter]. There is 2 in my list.

Austin RustFest (4/10/02)
Being a RustFest virgin and all, I was planning on visiting Threadgill's within the next few days and talking to management folks about being able to have...I'm guessing 16 to 20 human beings...sort of be able to sit together in close proximity, either at the same table or the same group of tables. Ideally, it'll be this glorious spring day and we could all sit outside at the lawn tables.
How have other RustFest gatherings been put together at restaurants?....how do you congregate if you haven't met each other in person?....do we all just have that certain look about us?....I would assume Neil-related clothing would be a giveaway....maybe I could bring an album cover and set it on the table as sort of a flag....whaddayall think?
Judy and I are still up for it...we were thinkin' about showing up at about 5:30 or 6:00 before the 8:00 show. By the way, after talkin' it over, we're leaving our kids with some friends for the evening...and I'm hopin' ol' Neil will someday play us another glorious solo acoustic show.
Take care, Charlie

Re: Does Neil read the Rust-sent Holiday Card?
I guarantee you Neil looks at his mail. It might take him awhile to get to it but he does. I refuse to divulge my knowledge concerning this but Neil's a fantastic human being with a heart of gold (we all know that!). Peace, Christine Young

Re: AOTW: Life, and the live tracks
After we saw Neil and Crazy Horse in Chicago in Fall of 1986, I figured the next album was going to be great. And I was ready for a great Crazy Horse album, too. Here's what I heard that night and thought was coming:
Too Lonely - simple but fun Eldorado Town - couldn't hear the lyrics well in that barn that is/was the Horizon, but the riff sounded great Inca Queen - this blew me away live Around the World - I think maybe this was played, I remember there being another new rocker. Mideast Vacation Long Walk Home - a great one/two punch, intriguing lyrics Prisoners of Rock n Roll - this was a great closer - a rededication, I thought
So there we had in 7 songs the beginnings of a great album. Add a couple more great tunes and you have a classic, but when Life came out I was somewhat underwhelmed. Why?
Studio tinkering messed up good songs - like others have said. I didn't like the middle section of Around the World. I didn't need the bombs in Long Walk Home - more subtle in concert in 1986, though they included the bomb sounds in 1987. I also didn't like the monkey sounds in Inca Queen.
Ultimately, what did in Life for me was that the song order didn't flow well. Prisoners is an opener or a closer and sounded out of place in the middle. We lost Eldorado Town and gained one good rocker (Crying Eyes) and 2 slow tunes. With the ballads on the end the album ended with a big bag of downers. The two songs weren't bad, as such, but they didn't sound good on the end, and they were only good not great songs.
When I recorded my albums to tape in the late 80's I broke up Life to use as filler for among other things the superstars in concert radio broadcast. Recorded during the same tour, the show didn't include any of the new songs, so it made sense to me to put live sounding Life tracks there.
I've got it on CD now, but I do wish it had been done differently. Not bad, just fumbled, IMHO. Maybe it should have been done as a live album like Time Fades Away. Oh well ...
Joe

o {{CSNY singles from this period...}} o Ohio o Find The Cost Of Freedom I'm still not sure about adding tracks onto the album polls. Ohio is gonna claim a lot of votes from the real Deja Vu tracks which kind of spoils the poll for me a little. Just my 2 penneth. Jules Upon the Sea
