Transmit message <...>0/zzzzzzzz in WSJT-x using W3DJS image window is too large for 7 inch screen
Running a Pi 3, 7 inch touch screen (using a mouse), FT-817nd, Yaesu CAT cable and homebrewed interface. I installed the W3DJS V2.0 image of ham radio apps. It is up and running, but I have noticed some odd things:
1. The window for the WSJT-x cannot be reduced beyond a certain size. It is a bit large for the 7 inch screen so to operate all the buttons I have to "grab" the window by using ALT and the mouse left button to move the window around. It is annoying, but does work. Is there another version of WSJT-x that I could install over the current one to fix this? In the W3DJS V1.0 WSJT-x, I was able to fit it all onto the screen.? 2. The first few contacts went fine, but now I'm noticing that in the Receive window on WSJT-x, when I transmit, instead of showing a call letter, it puts something like "<...>0/zzzzzzzz" where the call should be. I'm not at the radio at the moment, but I seem to recall seeing it in the CQ text as well. I have a second station and at some point I will monitor what I'm actually transmitting to see if it compares to what I see in the receive window. Any thoughts? Thanks, de K1YPP |
As far as the?<...>0/zzzzzzzz goes, I checked with the other station and it wasn't transmitting my call, just "<...>"? I went into settings and deleted my call and re-typed it. I also noticed that the grid locator now had "EL8" instead of EL87. Why it dropped the digit, I'll never know.
Anyway, after fixing those things, I found that it was transmitting just fine and immediately made a contact with a station in Wyoming, so all is well. Why it gliched, it is up to the software gods. As for the window being too large, I don't have a solution for that. de K1YPP |

I don't know if this will specifically help you, but it can't hurt to try... There is another weak-signal software program installed -- JTDX. You might try running JTDX and see if it will fit within your screen dimensions. I hope this helps. 73, ? -- - Dave ?? |

I had a kind of the same issue here but I am not using the official 7" screen either. I tried to resize the screen initially but for some reason I can't explain, it would not take. I finally tried resizing the screen while I was using it through vnc. The normal screen was off at the time. It took and held. Using the pre-hampi distro. Hope this helps some. James W8ISS P.S. = I do see the <....>/zzzzz and a callsign once in awhile. Had no issues though. |
Actually, I am using the official 7" screen, but I don't think it really matters. I haven't tried the VNC thing, I'll give that a go at some point though.
As I noted, it did work properly with the V1.0 HamPi distro, but doesn't in V2.0, for whatever reason. It could be a WSJT-x issue. I'm no expert. I can live with until a solution comes along. As for the <...>/zzzzzz thing, I was actually transmitting that for my call letter, it was ignoring my call in the setup window. Weird. I'm not certain if you meant you had it for your transmitted call, or you've seen it go by in something you see in the receive pattern. Maybe you saw me transmitting Hi Hi. Thanks Dennis, K1YPP |
WSJT-X on a 7" screen is a known limitation (resolution) On Fri, Jul 10, 2020 at 10:13 AM Dennis Blanchard via <k1ypp=[email protected]> wrote: Actually, I am using the official 7" screen, but I don't think it really matters. V1.0 is actually the new version.? The V2.0 was the last of the previous, but it's name changed to HamPi On Fri, Jul 10, 2020 at 10:13 AM Dennis Blanchard via <k1ypp=[email protected]> wrote: Actually, I am using the official 7" screen, but I don't think it really matters. Now I'm really confused. V1.0 is the newest version. I still have the image for V1.0, before I get things really etched in stone, I should go to V1.0?
V1.0 seemed to have far fewer apps in it. I guess I could add them individually. I'll have to find a place that has all of this information laid out so I can figure out what is going on. Talk about confusing. Dennis, K1YPP |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Dennis I may be wrong but there are two V1.0 products that Dave W3DJS
produced the first one was several months ago, unfortunately I removed all references to it so I can't tell what it was called. The original had also a V2.0 with some add on programs. I think. The second was named HamPi V1.0, that is the latest one with a lot more apps included. That is the one I think you want, but the original was no slouch but had an automatic Hotspot that caused some confusion which helped to cause the production of the second
disk. Now I hope I haven't caused even more confusion on this subject. Not intending that at all.
Good Luck.

I came to the HamPi game late. I saw a video a week or two ago that talked about it, don't recall the fellow's call, something with 'OG' in it.I didn't realize that I came in at the middle of something that W3DJS was doing and didn't catch the name change. I still have the V1.0 image that I had initially used, I can put it back on. I should have paid more attention, instead of running off half-cocked and not paying attention to detail. My bad.
I think this announcement page covers things and gives links to the latest. Sorry for all the bother for everyone. Incidentally, the V1.0 did actually size properly on the 7 inch screen. I had to fiddle with a few things, but did get it to work properly. See you all down the waterfall on on CW somewhere... Dennis, K1YPP |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe Video was Friday June 12 ?Episode 294 of Ask DaveI caught it Friday the 19th. ?That encouraged me to buy my first Raspberry Pi. 73 de ?KE0ZUW

I've reinstalled the W3DJS HamPi V1.0 and the WSJT-x does now fit on the seven inch screen. I did adjust the framesize in the config.txt file by removing the "#" comment.
The problem I've run into in WSJT-x on V1.0 is the Hamlib database for the FT-817 does not recognize the CAT controller and won't key the transmitter. The work around is to use the Hamlib database for the FT-857, it does seem to work? okay. Is there a way to have WSJT-x use a FT817.xml file instead? That would be a work around.? I've also installed Filezilla to transfer files between systems. That might be a handy addition to the W3DJS package in the future. Oh, perhaps Dave should have considered calling the latest version, V3.0, instead of V1.0. This would have brought folks to the latest version without confusion, since it was actually a name change that might go unnoticed. Just a thought. 73, de K1YPP |
