Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
Side note, the 12/96 jumper is for the mini 6 connector.? Are you using the DB9 connector on the TNC? Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
Each one is tested in stand alone mode and then I flash them with the Pi firmware.? Do the yellow and red leds come on at any time?? You can flash them back to the stand alone mode and plug them into a windows laptop and do a quick winlink session as a test as well. "?I'm starting to wonder if it is some heavy QRM here from an external source to be honest." Have you tried listening to the the radio? How does it sound? You should be able to hear QRM.? Does the radio have an S meter, does it show reception of any signal when you are testing? Have you tried plugging in a mic and making a contact to test the audio? Max

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAlso make sure you have the 1200/9600 jumper in the right place. This selects which pin on the 6 pin mini din is used for receive audio. Ideally Input peaks need to be above +-20000.73, John On 04/02/2022 15:57, David Ranch wrote:

It's a Perl 5 script so doesn't need installing.
In the terminal, type perl -v to see which version of perl, if any, you have installed. Docs are here: On 04/02/2022 11:25 Steve Sutterer <73ak0m@...> wrote:Nigel A. Gunn, ///shoulders.outwards.resolutions tel +1-937-971-0366 Amateur Radio G8IFF W8IFF and GMRS WRBV701, e-mail nigel@... www |
Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBased on that output, it seems the pi9k6 isn't hearing anything.? I assume you're putting the audio out of your TM-V71A via the 6pin DATA jack so check the cabling from the radio to the TNC.? If that seems ok, the next step would be to either increase the RX level on the pi9k6 (move away from "auto" to some fixed level) and/ or you can also increase the level out of the V71.? To change the V71 level, you have to use Kenwood's windows-only MCP-2A utility: ?? If neither of those settings help your input RX level, you might consider installing the pi9k6 soundcard alternative firmware and see if you can record the incoming audio just like a standard soundcard.? If you can't hear anything from your audio captures there, you might have something wrong with the pi9k6.? Was this a kit you assembled?? --David KI6ZHD On 02/04/2022 06:21 AM, KN6FOA wrote:

Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe default params are:TXDELAY 30 PERSIST 64 SLOTTIME 10 TXTAIL 0 FULLDUP 0 KISSCHANNEL 0 I2CADDRESS 30 Baud 12 Centre Freq 170 RX Level?? 0 TX Level?? 30 centreFreq? 1700 ? I2C Address isn't used - that is set in the config when building the software. As it seems you are transmitting ok then the chances are the out of range parameter values are being ignored. You have the RX Level set to auto. This normally works ok, so long as you are using unsquelched audio, but it would be worth checking that the received audio is in range.? If you have #define MONPORT Serial in TeensyConfigPacket.h then debug output will be written to the USB port. So if you connect the USB port either to the pi or another host and run a terminal program on it you should be able to get a better idea of what is going on. Although the TNC works on i2c the interface isn't very efficient, so you you need more than one and have a spare USB port I suggest you use the USB host interface instead if i2c. 73, John On 02/02/2022 20:48, KN6FOA wrote:

Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
I am using 3 TNCs on this pi to control a VHF/UHF radio, a VHF radio, and an HF radio for my go box.? By lock I mean decode.? The I2C address in the?pitnc_getparams??command does not show the i2c address after changing it in the source code but?i2cdetech?does show the addresses in use for the various TNCs.

Re: Proper pi9k6 configuration for AX.25 and PAT
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello KN6FOA, I was finally able to build the firmware and flash the Arduino with the I2C settings for my pi9k6 TNCs.?I am using "sudo i2ckiss 1 8 wl2k 127.0.0.1" to bind to the AX.25 port "wl2k" which is defined as "wl2k KN6FOA-10 1200 255 7 Winlink" in the axports file. Two things here: 1. Are you really intending to use the PI9k6 TNC in I2C mode and not serial mode?? This is NOT the default as the default is to use the Raspberry Pi's build-in serial port.? The use of I2C-based I/O is generally only used when you plan to stack multiple PI9k6 HATs on top of each and share the I2C bus between them. 2. Do? NOT use 127.0.0.1 as the IP address on your ax0 interface as that IP address is already used on your lo0 interface.? Use something else such as 44.128.0.1? (a reserved AMPR address used specifically for local only type usecases) 3. Your i2ckiss command is showing you're communicating to the I2C address of 8 above yet in the output below, it's showing it has the I2C address of FF.? That's not right. I am attempting to connect to a gateway running 1200 baud PACKET and I can hear data being sent by listening on another radio and I can hear responses from the RMS on the radio attached to the TNC but it does not seem to want to lock to the station When you say "lock", I assume you're saying your station is not decoding those packet using say the "axlisten" program.? Correct? PAT just returns "Unable to establish connection to remote: Dial timeout" and never fully connects.? I know the radio and the cable works as plugging it into a Kantronics TNC to my laptop works so I'm sure it is either a software config issue or something to do with the pi9k6.? I have pasted my TNC settings below to see if it is something there that needs to be adjusted. An I2C address of "ff" doesn't look right to me.? Anyway, you might look at my older TNCPi documentation as it might be helpful to you: ??
This is only showing what LInux thinks it's transmitting.? Is the TNC actually responding, lighting up it's PTT LED, keying up the radio?? Using another radio (HT, etc), can you hear clean AFSK packet tones being transmitted out from your packet station? --David KI6ZHD |

Re: New Member Question
David,
Those other Pi's are long gone, so there is no way I can do any further debugging. At present I've only got two Mac Mini's (one M1, one Intel) and this new RPi 400. This afternoon I hooked up the '400 and got it going. Out of the box, it only half worked. Well, more than half. This unit must have been sitting on a shelf for a while, as a few things didn't work. One was the "suggested applications", and the other was sudo apt-get update. Both returned errors that, after doing some Googling, I found out that it is now sudo apt update. This worked and I followed it up with a sudo apt upgrade, which took mere milliseconds to complete. Actually, it took about 45 minutes, but when it was done, several things worked properly that didn't work when the '400 came out of the box. Prior to doing the upgrade, the system was unable to find my Epson network-attached printer. After the upgrade, all FB. I still -may- need to use VNC to get to my Mac - I've got files on the iCloud Drive that I'm not sure the '400 will be able to see simply by using the network addressing. I'll test this tonight or over the weekend. I will NOT be loading BOINC on the new '400 - got it running on the two Mac Mini's - that's enough of my computing power they are gonna get! Anyway, thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions - on to using the new computer. 72/73, Jim K7TXA |
Re: New Member Question
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWhen I say it went into the weeds, I meant it was completely frozen. No amount of keyboarding or mouse movement would get it going. Could not get to it from any other computer - it was frozen, big time. I noticed this sort of issue would happen with the machine having sat for days and days on end with no human interaction. Now, I will say that it WAS doing something at one point - I was running an application called BOINC Manager - an app that allows multiple packages to run in the background, like the old SETI, Rosetta, etc. Ah.. I know BOINC and it's one of the more brutal sustained high CPU loading applications out there.? If you turn OFF BOINC and your Rpi remains idle for days, do you see better uptime?? If so, this could be exposing weaknesses with cooling the Rpi, maybe the power supply isn't as good as you think it is, etc.? Some of the other comments from people especially the RFI interference issues are things to consider as I've had that happen to me as well.? The power supply power cable itself was bringing in the RFI and causing the Pi to fritz out.? After I added a VHF-tuned ferrite to the Micro-USB side of the cable, the fritzing went away. It seems that if I messed with the RPi on a daily (or so) basis, it would be fine. But if I left it alone for a long period of time, I guess it got lonely and thought I'd abandoned it!I have seen examples where a remote, wifi-only attached will seemingly stop sending daily logwatch emails, etc. but it's still there where I can ping and SSH into it.? I believe some of this issue has to do with very marginal wifi associations.? I could not explain the behavior and after upgrading to a newer OS, the issue went away.? What OS version are you running on your Pis? --David KI6ZHD |
Re: New Member Question
Here's where the MoPi2 hot-swap power supply hat really shines. It takes two 6-30VDC inputs, plus a charge input. Normally, your primary power goes into port 1 and your backup battery goes to port 2. The charge port keeps your backup battery charged. Set your parameters so when the primary power drops below a preset amount, it instantly switches to the backup input. If the backup input drops below a preset level, it initiates a clean shutdown of the RPi. A single button controls startup and shutdown of the RPi. For a remote site, a simple Arduino device on a DTMF decoder hooked to a receiver can send shutdown and startup to the RPi.
