DTP WITH P900
6
hello, is it possible to make DTP type photo-engravings with a P900 and how to adjust the gap between the rollers and the thickness of the plate? my few attempts (insertion of the plates from the front) led to a breakdown which required an expensive repair and a shouting match from the Epson approved repairers who told me that the machine was not made for that. Thank you for your reply. I am having profiles made for Quadtone. Eric Horvath Envoyé de mon iPhone

Anyone working with P9570?
I have access to a P9570 and would like to try making some larger negs. Has anyone found a way to make this work? I checked the threads and only found one person who also was wanting to work with a P9570. I was successfully able to add the printer using the "InstallP9500.command" within the QuadToneRIP Profiles (in Apps), but... I have no idea if the P9500 and P9570 are similar. Anyone? The software/apps I typically use are: Use QuadToneRIP PrintTool QCDN

newby question about printing digital neagtives with QTR on PC
3
I am making digital negatives and need some help. I will explain below how I got to this place, but my immediate question is this: I created a .quad curve on a Mac using Richard Boutwell's Quad Tone Profiler. I want to use this curve to print on a P900 using QTR on a PC. The GUI in QTR v2.8.2 does not accept 10 inks. Can I simply edit the .quad file by deleting the V and MK curves to make it work with QTR? Or do I need to run QTR .exe files from the command window? If so, which .exe file should I run and what are the command arguments to identify the printer, paper, feed, etc? Ok, so why am I trying to print with the PC? I have two Macs, one running iOS 14.7 and one running iOS 10.14. I cannot get either of these to print using the QTR Print-Tool 2.3.4 with the front feed on my Epson P900. I continually get an error saying that "The paper do not match the settings on the printer." I suspect that this is because Print-tool does not have any options for selecting the front/rear feed or the type of paper, so the printer is confused. When I print from the PC using QTR, I have both feed and paper options available. I can print from the Mac using Print-Tool if I use the top feed, but I prefer the front feed because the quality of the digital negatives looks better. Although I do not have serious problems with pizza wheel marks, there is some banding and unevenness with the top feed - especially with negatives that need heavier ink loads for carbon transfer printing. It is less of an issue with Palladium. The negatives printed with the front feed - No Eject - are better. Any advice would be welcome. Criss Hartzell LuminousAlchemyArt.com

sawtooth measurements in scan mode
7
#problems
I am getting a sawtooth/jagged line from my measurements of a test chart, when taking the measurements in scan mode, but not in spot mode. Using an ES-2000 spectro, measuring Piezography test charts in i1Profiler 3.8.4 on Mac OS Ventura 13.5, M1 Max MBP. I have posted over on the Piezo Pro forum where I'm a member, but this is possibly more related to the spectro or i1Profiler, so I'm assuming relevance to this forum. I get results as expected when taking measurements in spot mode, as so - this is a spot measurement of a 51-step test chart printed on paper using a curve that I have previously linearised and ink limited for that paper to as ‘perfect’ as I could get it, so it is a good reference: But when I take measurements of the exact same test chart print using scan mode, it looks as so: I have left off any smoothing at all just to show the full extent of the difference. I have checked the sample ID, position and sample name of each measurement in the saved measurements .txt files and can see that i1Profiler looks to be compiling the measurements in the proper order just fine. Has anyone experienced sawtooth measurements with an i1Pro 2 or ES-2000? Is it dodgy hardware? Or is it firmware related? If it is to do with it being an ES-2000 then how come spot measuring seems fine? I get the same outcome whether measuring a 51 step chart or a 129 step chart. I have tried with the 21x16 and 31x9 charts but - another weirdness - I cannot seem to get past measuring the first line of those charts, I just get told by i1Profiler of a measurement error and that I need to try slower (I am being very slow and precise). Maybe that’s something to do with the .pwxf files for those charts though?! Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers, Chris. -- instagram.com/itsmrjack_

DTP on Epson P900
17
Hi all. Maybe you can shed some light on this. I have just installed an Epson P900 to print on photo paper and also to produce my own DTP photogravures. Up till now I had my plates made for me in Spain. I installed Print Tool, the Quadtone K3 Profiler and the QTR. As someone previously suggested in the group, I created a new media file based on the Epson matt paper, and edited the paper thickness and platen gap accordingly. When I print through Print Tool and QTR Printer, the new media option I created is not available. It is only available in the Epson Print tool. So I selected A4 in the Print Tool using the Quad 900 QTP and selected the appropriate DTP curve (saved from the K3 profiler). I also selected Front Feed Poster Board. When I print, I am getting pizza line marks on the plate. (Photo and screenshots of the process attached). When I tried using the Epson Print tool (instead of Print Tool) with the saved media file as media setting, I did not get the line marks but the inking looks a bit dense. I'm really at a loss. Am I missing something? Maybe the screenshots can help. I am not using a carrier but feeding the A4 plate directly into the printer. Is anyone going through the Epson Print dialog instead of Print Tool etc to print his plates? Would be great to know what the settings are? I would be grateful for any guidance anyone can provide. Unfortunately there are no workshops on the topic in Malta. Thank you so much best Joe

Need help with separate Mac for printing DN only
5
Hello hive mind. I’m trying to avoid the issues with printing digital negatives on an Epson 3880 and Mac OS updates on my MacBook Pro.I have to update the MacBook Pro OS (for other reasons) and am looking to get a mac mini M4 (16Gb 10 core) just for printing so I don’t have to update the OS. I’m trying to wrap my brain around how that would work- somehow getting PrintTool and photoshop on the Mini without internet. Or do I update the OS and internet- download, then go back to a previous version of OS and disable internet? I figured I’d put the photos on a thumb drive from the MacBook to print on the mini. Any details or workflows you have mastered would be appreciated. I print digital negatives (for pt/pd, gum bichromate, cyanotype, etc.) and hope to venture into Photogravure. I use Print Tool, QCDN/QTR, Photoshop, Lightroom, FYI.

New .quad not printing...
2
#problems
I have a strange problem. I built a new .quad and when I went to print it nothing was printed. The printer load the paper, started the job, but there was no ink (I immediately aborted so as no to overheat the print head). I then tried printing a known good .quad (i.e. one I had previously printed). And the only change I made was to load this .quad. And it printed just fine. I am on MacOS Catalina. Printing through the Print Tool with QTR 2.8.2. P6000 printer. Some things I have tried: 1. downloaded and reinstalled a fresh copy of QTR 2. deleted and reinstalled the printer 3. cleared the library entry of any previously saved .quads (I'm on a Mac). After trying to print with the new .quad I ran the QTR diagnostic shell script. I have enclosed the file. Interestingly it is showing that the profile has ink 9 and 10. But when I open the file in both a text editor (Sublime Text) and QTR curve view I only see 8 channels. It seems there are "hidden" channels in the new .quad but they are not visible? Any thoughts, questions, or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you. Michael

How does QTR behave with MacOs 15 Sequoia? And are there any other printing problems with this operating system. How about the saving and updating preset problem? best regards, Kees

Multiple Issues Setting Up DTP with Epson P900
Each day seems to be different when it comes to starting out printing on polymer plates. Yesterday went fairly well, but today has been incredibly difficult. When the P900 asks for what type of paper to front load, I choose posterboard and then it asks what type of photo paper. I've chosen matte and that seems okay. Any advice here? Yesterday, I was able to print on my polymer plate that was centered in a carrier that was 13" x 19" without issue. Now, the printer is printing on the entire carrier (see image #1), but still printing the test image on the plate as expected. I'm using Print Tool. Typically, there are no problems using this software. Any ideas what's going on here? There are also lines occurring in the test image that appear on the printed image. How do I remedy this? Thank you. I truly appreciate any help anyone can provide. I'm so new to this, I don't think I'm searching the group well enough to find the answers I need. Bob Sullivan

OS Sequoia and Epson P700 - No longer supported by Epson?
3
Hi Y'all - The IT Dept at my Univ forced and update to Sequoia. I put it off for as long as I could. It seems Epson does not now have the stand alone driver, it is only their Epson Connect Printer Setup Utility v2.1.0 which I cannot get to work with PS or LrC. I can still use with Print Tool (thank goodness). Any one else having this issue, and any work arounds that could be helpful? Details: - MacMini M1 - OS Sequoia - Epson P700 Thanks in advance.

Can not change the drying time on my Epson 7800
4
Hello, I have a problem that is not directly QTR related but there is probably someone who would have an idea about it here. I need to increase the drying time between each pass for a specific projet that I print on a Stylus Pro 7800. I have a custom paper created, all settings are responding, like Platen Gap, but the Drying Time doesn't. Whatever the value I enter, it looks like the printer doesn't react and keep a drying time of 0s. It is the case when I print with QTR. I also tried with the Epson driver, both on the printer panel or in the driver setting, increasing the drying time has no effect. Has anyone an idea about what could be the cause of this? Thanks

Kirkland paper alternatives?
14
For years I have used Costco's Kirkland glossy paper as my day-to-day printing paper for Epson 3880. The paper is no longer available in Canada, and as nearly as I can tell it has disappeared in the US too. 1) Has the paper been rebranded (yet)? 2) What would you recommend as a more or less equivalent paper: range, surface, archival quality, availability, cost... Thanks! Myron

DTP printer recommendation
6
Hi there, I have some experience making photopolymer gravure plates from positive transparencies and am researching direct-to-plate workflows for my home studio. Browsing this group has been extremely helpful in thinking through the possibilities, so I was curious to ask what printers the group would recommend for someone starting to work with these processes, ideally printers where documentation and starter curves have already been developed for DTP. Since I'm less experienced with these models, I'm inclined towards buying a new printer, rather than refurbishing a used one. Am I correct in thinking, given the number of posts discussing them, that the Epson P700 and P900 models are the preferred 'new' printers for direct-to-plate methods? Are there other models that I should be considering? Many thanks, Mark Gorenstein

QCDN for non Ilford paper?
6
Hello, I would like to start using digital negative for silver gelatin prints, printing on Fomatone Multi-Grade papers which I use for my work. I have no experience with DN and would appreciate if anybody can help me with answering following questions... 1) I wonder if QCDN could be used to adapt its Ilford starter curve to this, or any other MG paper. Or do I need to consider the Pro version to built curve from scratch since my paper can behave totally different? 2) I try to read up on the whole process of creating DN but I got confused by QCDN documentation on Establishing Your Base Exposure page with following text: ... Start with a grade 0 or even 00 filter to activate the low contrast emulsion and then use the magenta inks along with the gray and black inks to activate the high contrast emullsion to reach a full range of tones. Link: https://publish.obsidian.md/bwmastery/Documentation+and+Instructions/QuadToneProfiler-QCDN+v2+Instructions/Establishing+You+Base+Exposure I think I understand the logic behind determining base exposure, blocking density, starter curve and and its subsequent linearisation however I am not clear on - 2a) whether I set my enlarger to grade 2 during the whole QCDN calibration process and then just use enlarger gradation to control the print contrast. 2b) or whether there is actually no need to play with gradation since any contrast is set in photoshop when making DN and using correct curve it nicely translates to the print and no further contrast adjustments are needed (but still G2 is used for calibration). 2c) or if I perform calibration using low-contrast grade (as suggested above, 0 or 00) and then somehow combine it with adding magenta into the mix to achieve different contrast? I am sorry if these questions are out of place or just plain stupid. I feel I need to understand how playing with magenta inks relates to DN curve I assume gets primarily created with K, LK, LLK inks and how it all relates to gradation of MG papers. Regards, Petr PS: I use Epson P600 and plan to use Pictorico OHP media.

QTR and AZO
8
With the help of Chris Anderson’s Ilford Classic and Warm-tone quad files I’ve have had good success in linearizing D Neg files. Also, vintage Portriga Rapid linearized very easily. However, beginning with the Lodima starter curve the lighter curve values for vintage AZO grade 2 simply will not linearize proportionately. Any suggestions ?? Thanks in advance. Unable to see curve profiles in Print Tool
I am using an Epson SureColor P900 printer, and recently upgraded to QuadToneRIP v2.8.2 and PrintTool v2/3/4/2. Mac OS Sierra (10.12.6). When I choose Quad900 as my printer, and choose QuadToneRIP under Printer and Paper settings, I don't see a list of profiles to choose from (as I did in my prior versions). I have executed the Install program from the proper color profile folder, but the profiles do not appear. Has anyone encountered this problem? I need to use the profile for direct plate photogravure, but cannot access it.

Mac Operating System Compatibility with QTR and Piezography
My late-2012 27" iMac was functioning well as my Piezography printing computer until, apparently, one day a year or so ago when I upgraded its operating system beyond QTR's capacity for change. If this topic has been addressed, I'd appreciate a link. I do not find a search function here. -- www.deancully.com
