What about putting a thermal switch in series with the fan? As the temperature rises to a specified level the fan would turn on. Otherwise it would remain off and silent.

I decided on the lowest current that could drive the 4100 to full output, in case I want to to AP Mode. An MJF-4115 was $79. It's pretty small, but the fan noise is a bit more than I would like. The
