Hi all, I had just completed the build of my QMX+ today and was very pleased that on first power up it sprang into life and appeared to be all functional. I then saw at power up that the firmware revision was 1.00.27 so I had downloaded the 1.02.000, extracted the file, then connected the unit to the PC. After entering the firmware update the screen went blank as expected and a USB drive appeared on the PC showing the eeprom and the QMX file. I then copied across the new file which appeared to go ok but nothing after that. I waited to see if it would come back after a while but nothing. At this point I disconnected the power and reapplied it, attempted to turn on from the front panel but no response. The unit now appears dead. I built this unit as a 12V version and am running it on a bench PSU set to 11.5V. Before I did the update it was drawing around 130mA. Now, after connecting the power and pressing the power on button, although there is no display the unit is drawing around 180mA but otherwise is dead. Any ideas what could be at fault or what could be checked? Ian

Hello! I am trying to find right settings to start work with WinLink and VARA HF threw QMX. CAT connection is OK. The only problem here is that when I choose some Gateway channel QMX always switches to USB mode from DiGi. But it is not a big deal to return back to DiGi manually. The main problem is that when I start connection with the chosen channel QMX shows two dots as TX status. Which means that audio level from PC is too low. But I've put it to maximum. And everything works fine with WSJT-X and JS8Call. So problem is definitely with some WinLink VARA HF settings? Can smb help? Hans, did you try to use WinLink with QMX?

Hello, I am interested in enabling the IQ and displaying the information on my PC. I know it's possible but I have never attempted it. What SDR software should I try (I run both Windows & Linux) Has anyone done this? Please share your experience Is it simply a matter of enabling IQ in the Digi menu and pointing to the sound card from something like SDRPlay? Thanks in advance!

I just built the Pacific Antenna electret mic kit to use on my new QMX+ with updated firmware to operate SSB...following the instructions in the QRP-Lab's manual to wire the mic connector, when I key the new mic, it transmits what I believe is a two-tone test signal! So, it keys the rig with RF output but somehow the QMX+ transmits a two-tone signal always...any thoughts what's going on? Thanks and 73 ed

I went to finally update the new software but chose the fist alpha version by mistake....v 100 001 .... I can no longer find the upgrade software in the menu settings if the rig with this firmware...thoughts? Scott

So I finally got around to build my QMX High band after looking at it on a shelf for the last year. I thought thing had gone pretty smoothly and appeared to be so with the initial power on. I built it for 12 vdc, but used a bench power supply set at 8vdc and saw about 170 milliamp draw. I did the firmware upload and then I couldn't get the display to work. There was only 1.6 vdc on the 3rd pin of the side closest to the display. No other pins had voltage. I turned up the voltage on the power supply to 11vdc, but did not see an increase in amperage, in fact it went down to about 70 milliamps. I was even able to use the jumper to re-initialize it and saw the same readings. So I started taking voltage readings around the board. The 2x4 (S302) and saw this Top row (closest to LCD) Pins 1 - 0vdc 2- 10.8vdc 3- 3.2vdc 4- 3.2vdc Bottom row 1-2.9vdc 2- 3.28vdc 3- 3.25vdc 4- 3.25vdc Then I started to poke around some more on the power supply boards, and I believe I must have been a little sloppy taking some voltage readings, because now it won't power on at all. I can see the amperage increase to 10 milliamps when I try to turn it on, but it immediately goes back to zero when I release the encoder. Which makes me think I damaged something in the power hold circuitry, so I suppose I'm buying replacement power supplies, but I'm hesitant because that won't fix the original problem it just gets me back to where I started. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I just updated to the new SSB firmware on QMX+ Rev. 3 and was hoping to try out MSK144 mode in WSJT-X. (Probably not enough power to be heard by anyone, but still.) I have found the PTT over CAT control to be inconsistent when in USB mode. Usually the first TX works and then the rest briefly trigger then un-trigger PTT. (DIGI mode still works just great.) Looking at the CAT monitor doesn't show anything odd (no early RX; sent) and it's not triggering SWR protection or anything. PTT over CAT in USB mode in fldigi---also using Hamlib, same Kenwood TS-480 config---works fine. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that WSJT-X is sending either 'TX;' or 'TX1;' depending on the configuration; while fldigi is sending 'TX0;' which for some reason is more reliable in convincing the QMX+ to transmit. Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions or ways to convince WSJT-X to send 'TX0;' instead? TNX 73 de Tim AF0CQ

Is it possible to operate different modes in Split? For example: VFO A (RX): LSB VFO B (TX): CW 73, Robert VE7ZN

I plan to build two QCX+: one 20M band and one 30M band. If I also build a 50W Amp for QCX with the 20M band low pass filter am I right to guess that this 50W Amp will work well in agrrement with the regulations about harmonics with the 20M and 30M QCX+ without any need for other filters? 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

Last night while playing with my qmx the receiver went deaf. This happened after txing on ssb with IQ mode on and panadapter open. I was using a mic connected to the radio. The S meter with antenna dropped to nearly nothing and I can only hear white noise now. The radio will still put out 5w. I ran my little signal generator into qmx and on receive I hear nothing at -33dbm. At 0dbm (I know quite strong) the signal will get through. Any thoughts? Thank you Ryan KK6DZB

QMX, running Tabby Terminal on a MAC M1 The mic test shows one bar with mic response showing as dashes . Live response but only the one line. Still works for mic setup but scrolling would be nicer. Have always used the Tabby ( putty for mac and free) for both the QMX and QMX+. What is the sweet spot on the onboard display running now with 2 bars boise ob upper and 5 bars on upper when talking I've been lazy about getting my general so 10M is my playground now. Just as I got SSB working the10 M band has died. the U3 gets the same 2 receivers at 10+ miles away rather than 20 to 40 reports on PSK rptr when things are good. Rain dances etc welcomed!!

Hello All This is my first post to group. Thank you for the invite, I appreciate it. After searching thru some of the files I found myself somewhat confused by all the battery options. My kit building days took place in the 50s thru the 80's with the complete Heathkit SB line along with many other kits. My hands and eyes are not what they used to be. I ordered a prebuilt QMX-12-volt xcver and after perusing the files as to what type of battery and accessories to get, I found myself confused by all the different options. I have an IC 705 which is essentially plug and play. Apparently, that's not the case with the QMX. From what I gather from the group, the Talent Cell 12-volt battery is popular. There are many Bioenno 12-volt batteries available as well. Not sure what AH ratings I should be looking for. It seems the xcvr is very picky as to what you power it with and what accessories you should have along with the battery PD Banks, Buc converters etc. all that I'm not familiar with. Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated and the KISS term would help me a lot. Thank you very much for your help. 73 Jeff WB9DAR

Greetings to the brain trust. I have a kit built QMX which is awesome and works great on CW. I have upgraded to the 1.02.000 ( the latest firmware) and added a QRP GUYS mic. Everything seems to check out in the hardware tests, but it seems very low output on SSB. I've set the mic. gain to 75 which seems to help, some. Any ideas on trouble shooting? Thanks in advance. Hey there! I am coming to the end of constructing my QMX+ and assembling the display board. I've got to the point of soldering the internal microphone and when I have got it out of the bag of remaining parts, I have found that the positive lead out of the body of the microphone is loose. I guess this is the best description of it. The lead can go into the microphone body a little bit, but doesn't come right out of the body and it doesn't seem to be attached to anything internally. Have I got a damaged microphone? If so, can someone advise me if I can source a replacement? 73s Glenn VK2AXV

My QMX released the magic smoke yesterday and I quickly traced the smoke to a crater in D108, the 5.6V zener on the 5V PSU board. Having recently read Hans’ excellent SMPS analysis (http://qrp-labs.com/qmx/smpsstep.html ) it got me wondering what could have caused the fault. I had been powering my QMX from a USB-C battery and this 12v cable (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09ZL1WZ4G). I then remembered that USB-C PD adapters typically start with the output at 5V and then shortly afterwards increase the voltage to that negotiated by the device (in this case 12V). This would generate exactly the voltage pattern Hans has told us to AVOID. I took a trace of the voltage power-up sequence, and this is the result (no QMX’s were harmed in creating this trace). Output power starts at 5V for 120ms before increasing to 12V, perfectly creating Hans’ disaster scenario and causing D108 to sacrifice itself to protect the rest of the QMX. Thankfully the rest of my QMX appears to have survived unharmed, thanks to D108. Conclusion: don’t use a USB-C battery to power your QMX, unless you’ve confirmed your adapter behaves differently! Hi everyone, I've been using my QMX for about an year with great joy and happiness when suddenly my QMX stopped receiving or transmitting. I'm fairly new to radio and i am struggling to find the problem. The sweeps are all garbage on all freqs: RF filter sweep, Audio Filter Sweep, everything but the LPF sweeps. The Voltages seem good although when I press "T", the transmitter voltage shows 9.8v in red. My QMX is 12V. I have little knowledge and i need a hand from you guys, to know where to start.
