Hi all SSB firmware was released into beta on 17-Mar-2025 after 9+ months of development. Many thanks to everyone who bravely helped test it and patiently provided their feedback and observations. There are now quite a few YouTube videos, forum reports and other social media mentions about on-air successes with QMX SSB. Now that it has been at least 6 weeks in beta and I believe most of the issues have been resolved, it's time to promote it to an official version. I have called this version 1_02_000 and published it on the QMX page http://qrp-labs.com/qmx where I have also published the updated operating manual, which grew from 111 pages to 134 pages. The main changes are: SSB (obviously!) including CESSB, TX Equalization, Mic AGC, VOX, Pre-distortion and and and... Addition of up to two more USB Virtual COM serial ports (up to three total). All of the hardware tests such as RF and SWR sweep, and Diagnostics, are now available on the LCD too. Hi, When running the various diagnostic sweeps I find all bands except 160m seem reasonable similarities to those shown in the manual. But the 160m seems way off. Any ideas what may be causing this and what I should be checking? I'll include screenshots of the sweeps. Many thanks Ian

Hello, I ordered a fully assembled QMX in April, and got it about two weeks ago. It died while i was listening to it. I maybe have listened to it a half hour total or less. i was switching bands and got a real sharp noise from my speaker, and then the screen went blank. not sure what the problem is, but i have only listened with it, and haven't even transmitted yet as a dont do cw yet, and i was building a mic for ssb. I was hoping to try digital modes on sunday, but i was just about to tune in to see if i could hear the 10m FT8 band as its a nice and sunny day, and i haven't been able to even hear ft8 on 10m as of yet. but its been pretty stormy here when i have been able to look at it during the week. I have not open it up as i am not sure if Hans will want me to return it as is since it is so new, or if im stuck and have to repair myself. I really dont think this should have died after only about 20 minutes of just listening to it. i know things happen, but i would have just bought the kit. It did turn itself off a couple times randomly before this. TBH i thought this was just my battery turning off since the draw is so low on receive. but maybe there was a problem in the first place? I did measure a resistance a couple places, and battery terminal is fine, but the antenna to ground is less than a half ohm? also not sure how to contact hans for what to do, but i replied to the email sent and tried the "help ticket" but not sure i should message him here? thanks, Ted

When Elecraft introduced the KH1 a year ago, I was immediately enthusiastic about the concept. A small and lightweight shortwave radio with an integrated telescopic antenna. This means that, weighing less than 400g, it can be used in any suitable location on shortwave. So I wanted to build something myself. I immediately began my own experiments with telescopic antennas for 7-30 MHz. This confirmed that a counterweight is absolutely necessary. This wire, which is a quarter of the wavelength long, contributes significantly to the radiated energy. So the idea arose to forgo the telescopic antenna and experiment with end-fed wires twice the length. Of course, it makes sense to stretch the wire as high as possible. But I also got respectable reports with EFHW lying on the ground or in bushes. In this place the antenna may detunes itself, so a tuner is necessary, as well as the standard 1:64 transformer (Unun). The tried-and-tested resonance circuit (Fuchs Kreis) performs both tasks. Once the antenna issue was resolved, QRP Labs brought out the QMX. The ideal TRX for my projects, and now even capable of SSB. Now all that was missing was a suitable housing with an integrated battery and a speaker with an amplifier. Then a paddle for CW as a contactless touch key directly on the device. And the QMX Carrot was finished. But it wasn’t that simple, because everything had to be as small and light as possible. Received the kit from FedEx in a perfectly intact box. The content check was positive with the exception of the L501 inductor with the partially broken edge. Can this defect affect the operation of the kit?

Hi guys I have built a QMX+ Wound for 12V. FW 1_02_000 From the get go, on TX, I have in my headphones a pulsing sound. No tone to it. It’s a fast pace pulse. Maybe 3-4hz. When using the SWR tune tool the led on my ZM-2 will flash at the same rate. Keying the mic and listening on a SDR I can hear the pulse in the background. I am unable to hear it in a CW tone on the SDR but it is in my headphones on SSB and CW. The pulse does not toggle the rf, it just seems to be embedded in it. On the face of it. It transmits fine. Randomly I get ear bending white noise on start up. (My QMX build went fine and its functioning well, go figure) Hoping someone might have a pointer on this. Have dummy load, dvm and power is meter on the way…. Thanks in advance. Ian. ZL1HIM

D505 has an odd appearance, it's missing the T4 label and appears damaged, but tests fine with a multimeter diode tester The 331 SMD inductor in the second photo has a missing bit on the top. Should either of these be replaced?
