Making headway.? Basics are functional now.? What you see here is FLDIGI using the QDX as the sound card naturally.? Working on the message formatting.? Eventually we'll have these devices connectable to the internet via my AWS account (for dev and test) also.? Remote control over the device via internet in a web browser, with chat, presence, etc.? More to come. Apply to groups.io group "qdxpro" to get in on the fun. Mitch

Re: alternate build procedure for Mini?

Hello Mike
Just building a 40m QCX mini.? Fitted T1 this morning along with LPF components out of sequence to ensure I could check out the completed filter before doing anything else,?having experienced an issue on a previous project caused by a wrongly marked capacitor.? Sequence is whatever is convenient for the builder - just check you haven't got too many bits left over at the end! I fitted L1 to L3, then checked them out for continuity before fitting C25 to C29.? I didn't cut off the leads from C25 and C29 immediately, but used them to tag onto 2 flyleads made up from a couple of inches of RG174 with SMA and BNC connectors respectively. I keep them for that purpose.? Saves getting solder in any hole I need later.?? Plugging in the nanoVNA says the filter looks fine, as expected.?? Just finished the 1300Z QCX QSO party session on 30m, cut short by blown fuse, so having fixed that, soldering iron on and back to the QCX mini. Good luck with yours. Chris? G4CWS |

Re: How do yiou know your ground is any good? OT
Hello all,
As the mains ground system is heavily poluted by all kinds of noise, I have always been using a separate radio ground in the garden. Especially using any kind of end-fed antenna, this will help to get rid of mains related noise issues. If regulatory issues don't allow a separate radio earth, a balanced antenna is called for. A 2 x 7.5 meter long dipole with open feed line and a tuner will work wonders on 40 through 10M. I am using 2 x 16 meter, 12 meter long open feeders, good for 80 through 10M and with the end of the feed-line strapped together it will also do 160M, albeit you need a few radials for that band. With a proper balun followed by a suitable auto ATU, matching the antenna on all bands is very well possible. That's how it works here. As a bonus, noise issues on receive are far less. As said before nothing will help against a direct strike, yet voltage buid-up on a wire antenna by distant thunderstorms is impressive. I have often noted flash-overs between the vanes a a wide spaced tuning capacitor. A solid 100K resistor between the two wires of the feed-line will take care of that. 73, Roelof, pa0rdt |

But if they're ground wires are long then they still have ground loops. Basically it has to do with 'there is no zero ohm wire'. They do mention that in the second floor ground problem. To sum up what I've read so far. RF grounding is a myth. There are only two type of Grounding; AC and safety. Oh and you need to deal with RF grounding. Good news I have lots of examples of folks who deal with real grounding issues (commercial radio, FAA, & NASA). Hopefully that will get past the contradictions. Right now I'm having a ground loop problem in my brain. ;-) I'll need some time to all absorb this. Re: How do yiou know your ground is any good? OT
I have had two lightening related failures over the years. Both were due to induces currents from nearby but not direct strikes. One was a TNC II (from TAPR) in the 80's. From the failed parts, it appeared to travel in on the GROUND line. The second was a laptop a few years ago. It came in through the telephone line, not the power.?

Mike,
I did that for the LPF's, see my blog Note that I built an older version, and used manual V 1.05, so things may be different for your version. I didn't bother for the BPF since this has quite a wide tuning range, and has the built-in adjustment procedure. Even when you get the LPF's right this way, you will need some fine tuning, since the output class-E finals are NOT 50 Ohm, so the measurement/adjustment? with the NanoVNA will not give you the optimal point, but it should at least reduce the guesswork.
