WX Spotting Log 0.2 - BETA Testers Needed!
Hi All, In addition to Amateur Radio, I've always been very interested in weather.? I've had an idea for a while now (I think I may have mentioned it before) about a WX Spots server that would function very much like DX Spotting.? It would give everyone the opportunity to monitor and post, real time weather information along the lines of SkyWarn protocols. We continue to hear that with all the automated data available today, there is no substitute for real time observations during severe weather.? On Monday July the 16th, we had a very minimal tornado touch down a couple miles from our home.? The damage wasn't too bad, but it did wind up closing a major roadway for over a day due to trees and power lines down.? Watching that process unfold on the news, it became obvious how necessary visual reports really are to quickly assess the extent of storm damage, and it got me thinking about this idea again.
In a nutshell, here is the idea: - Everyone (the clients) connect to a server, which relays real time observations back to all clients
- The clients have the option to display all data, or screen by state or county - Audio alerts can be specified by the user based on the?location - A messaging feature is available to allow for communication with other members of your organization (and any other connected users).
I shared this idea on the N3FJP_Software_Users?group a few weeks ago and the response was enthusiastic, so between the code that I have already written for the WOTA server and modules for the logging software, I've cobbled together the basic client and server to perform the described functions. We've been beta testing for about two weeks, and I'd like to get more users on the server to give it a good run through.? You won't find it on the website yet, but if you have an interest in this project,?please download the installation file by clicking on this link: If you are involved in Skywarn or something similar,?right now?is a great opportunity to have the other members of your group to also give it a try since, while in BETA testing, reports are assumed to be fictitious.? Everyone is encouraged to try sending reports and other features to get comfortable with the software.? Please try all the features and let me know of any bugs that?may come to light. Since this project is a little different than my "regular"?logging software, I have set up a separate e-mail group for this project: WXSpots-subscribe@... After you subscribe, please?send e-mail regarding this project?to WXSpots@....? One of the goals of this project is that support will be provided by the user community. As always, thanks?for your support and kind words, and in advance for trying out this program! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com/ Serving the Amateur Radio Community with contesting and general logging software since 1997. Frequency Privileges File Updated & 73 to Morse?
?
Hi All,
?
I have updated the frequency privileges file that is used to display the phone and CW privileges for each license class in my software with the new privileges that became effective on December 15, 2006.? This file also is used to determine whether to set your rig to phone or CW when you click on a DX spot.? If you are using AC Log to determine mode by frequency for data entry, this file will not not affect those results.? That process was hard coded and will have to be address separately.? You will find the file by clicking on the Country and Band Plan Files link at .
?
73 to Morse?
?
On a separate note, since this group represents a high percentage of contesters and CW enthusiasts, I wanted to pass along my thoughts on Friday's FCC announcement that the CW requirement is in fact being dropped for all license classes.? If your group is anything like ours here in Maryland, there have been quite a few passionate thoughts expressed on this subject in the last 48 hours.
?
Since the debate is over and the decision is now final, the focus is turning from?whether it is a good idea or not to the future of Morse code.? In response to a thread on our local club e-mail reflector entitled "73 to Morse", I wrote the following:
?
One thing is certain - CW is?fun.? Hams had to learn CW to get their licenses, but we didn't have to use it once we had ticket in hand.? The fact that CW remains a very popular mode is proof positive that it can stand on its own.
?
My hope is that this move will help infuse the hobby with the fresh minds and passions that it sorely needs.? If our numbers rise, a portion of this new group will learn code, not because they have to, but because they want to.
?
One incentive to learn CW is certainly contesting.? There are lots of CW only contests to participate in, and the multi mode contests usually give double the points to CW.? W3JX and N3HCN accounted for more than double the Field Day points on the CW station than the rest of us did on the phone station combined!?
?
Another incentive is that it is truly fun.? CW can be both relaxing when you are rag chewing at a nice comfortable speed and challenging when you are trying to nab that high speed DX or contest station in ways that other modes simply don't offer.?
?
I know that it will take some creative thinking on our part to help newcomers see?CW's value.? The joys of?CW - the sense of accomplishment, the fun of the rag chew, the thrill of nabbing a DX station, the excitement of?being at the bottom of a CW contest pileup;?can only be experienced by doing.? It is not easy to communicate with words, but it is incumbent on all of us to try.
?
I welcome the new hams that will come to the hobby.??I hope that once they have ticket in hand and the newness of the phone contacts has worn off, a worthwhile percentage will discover the fun and enduring qualities of CW.
?
Let's hope that we are wishing 73 to Morse in the sense of best regards, and not as part of a farewell.? If indeed this is farewell, there will be many who will never know what they missed.

N3FJP Software Announcements
开云体育?
Hi All,
?
Kimberly and I have three quick announcements:
?
New Country List Available
?
We have uploaded an updated country list to for the recent country changes.
You'll find the link to the list under the Country Files heading below the links
to each contest. Complete details for the update and download instructions are
included on the web page.
?
CQ WW Offset Reminder
?
Daylight savings time concludes this weekend. Our software checks your UTC
offset on startup and recommends a change if needed. Since it only checks on
startup, if you operate (or leave the program running) through the time change,
you will have to remember to change the offset manually when standard time
begins.
?
I haven't tried this myself, but another suggestion that came from the
users group is to set your UTC offset to zero and use the Casablanca time zone
setting in Windows (which is always UTC). To change your time zone
setting:
?
- Double click the clock on your task bar
- Click the Time Zone tab on the form that appears
- Scroll down until you find Casablanca and select it
?
RAC Call Data Format Change
?
If you have attempted to download and convert the Canadian call data
directly recently, you know that AC Log would hang. This occurred because the
file format for the RAC data has been modified. I have updated the .exe file to
accommodate the new?RAC data?format. To download the patch:
?
- Close AC Log 3.0
?
- Click this link to download the new .exe file:
?
?
- Save the file in the working directory of the program (default is
c:\program files\aclog 3.0.)
?
?
The fall contesting season is always an exciting time and lots of
fun!? As always, thanks for your kind thoughts and spreading the word about
our software.? We really appreciate it!
?
Please let us know if you have any questions.

CQP 1.9 & PAQP 1.8
Hi All,
?
As most of you probably know, the California QSO party kicks off the Fall contesting season this weekend.? What you may not know is that the rules committee changed?the county abbreviations.? Please be sure that you use version 1.9 of the California QSO Party software which incorporates the latest changes.??
?
Also, if you plan to operate RTTY or PSK during the Pennsylvania QSO party, be sure to download version 1.8 of the software.? Version 1.8 has been updated to log the modes RTTY and PSK (though it doesn't yet transmit or recieve those modes).? Unfortunately there wasn't time to rework the display of the main form to show the contact count for those modes, but they should be scored properly.?
?
This is a great time of year with a lot of neat contests just ahead!
?
As always, thanks for all!

WOTA & Field Day Network Tips
开云体育Hi All,
?
There have been a couple of enhancements to the Who's On The Air Database
(WOTA) that AC Log has been modified to support.? Most notably, WOTA now
supports group messaging!
?
Group messaging has a variety of applications.? For example, if you
include EMCOMM in your message groups, you can send and receive?instant
messages to all others in that group for emergency coordination.? This
enables "real time" communication with potentially thousands of hams all over
the world!? On a more local level, your area EMCOMM group can choose a
group name for local communication.?
?
Group messaging isn't limited to EMCOMM.? A WX group can be used to
report real time weather observations, or your local club can create a group
name for general communication.? Groups can be created "on the fly" to
track a balloon launch, coordinate a net, etc.?
?
Another important change to WOTA is that western longitude values should be
negative.? This only applies to the WOTA form for now (the longitude
value in AC Log's settings form is still positive).? I plan to make that
change generally in AC Log and the rest of my contesting software in?future
enhancements.
?
When you enter your coordinates, please be as precise as possible.? AC
Log has also been modified to allow for more digits in the WOTA?coordinate
upload and to save the WOTA lat/long independently.
?
Mark, WE6N, has done a fantastic job developing a map to display stations
by band on a world map.? This map is still under development and not yet
linked from , but you can take
a look by clicking here:
?
?
You'll notice that some of the stations are not properly located on the
map.? That's because the change to the longitude specification just
happened yesterday, and the software developers are just now getting the word
out to our users.? Hopefully, most users will get the word in the next few
days.
?
Click on the balloon to find out more details, or click on the station
listed on the right to zoom in on the station.? Click the plus and minus
signs, and you can zoom into neighborhood level!? Not only is it a great
way to see DX, but it also has applications for EMCOMM to see where stations are
deployed on a local level.? Precise coordinates will make the map much more
accurate, so please enter your values with care.
?
The changes I've made to AC Log are not represented by a version number
change.? The latest is still 3.0.? If you haven't yet upgraded to 3.0,
please download the latest from .? The installation package
now has the latest WOTA enhancements.
?
If you are already running version 3.0, please download the following
update by performing the these steps:
?
- Close AC Log 3.0.
?
- Click this link to download the updated .exe file:
?
?
- Save the file in c:\program files\ACLog 3.0.
?
- Start AC Log.
?
- Click Settings > DX Spotting > WOTA.
?
- Make sure your longitude is entered as a negative value if you have a
western longitude and check the participate check box.
?
?
Field Day Network Tips
?
?
The following are some tips that should help smooth the setup for the Field
Day Network software:
?
- For the messaging features to work properly, the path to the log file
from the computer hosting the log should NOT route through the network. The
client's path must route through the network and begin with \\ (the \\ tells the
software that it is a client and which PC to connect to as the server). For
example, the server's path might be: C:\FD\FDLog.mdb and each of the client's
paths would be: \\Develop\C\FD\FDLog.mdb (assuming
the PC hosting the file was Develop).
?
- Because some versions of Windows can be particular about accessing files
in the c:\program files directory via the network, it is best to create a
separate directory outside of program files on the PC hosting the log file such
as c:\FD.
?
- Make sure that all PCs and your router or hub are on a UPS
(uninterruptible power supply)! If your PC loses power when your generator runs
out of gas you are tempting fate!
?
- A backup of all your data is written to every PC connected to the log
file every 15 minutes.? Even if the PC hosting the log file has a
catastrophic failure, you can recover your log from any other PC on the network
by clicking File > Combine or Restore from Backup.
?
- Don't wait until the Saturday morning of Field
Day to install and test out the software on your network! If you
haven't already done so, get the PCs together before Field Day, hook them up and
make sure that each PC is able to access and update the common data file.
Problems solved very easily in a relaxed atmosphere can seem insurmountable when
the clock is ticking.
? Please send us a link of pictures of your Field Day after this year's
event.? It is really fun to see the activity from all setups, large and
small.? You'll find?pictures of our 2005 FD here:
?
?
We will be operating with the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest
Society (NE3MD) again this year.? Have fun, and we hope to work you!?

WOTA Update
?
Hi All,
?
Just to bring everyone up to speed, we have a number of software?authors that have joined the WOTA development group.? Many are in the process of adding WOTA to their programs now and some have already completed the addition!
?
One item that came to light is that AC Log was sending WOTA the actual country name, but for ease of implementation, most of the developers requested that the ADIF country number be used instead.? That is why you are starting to see numbers show up in the country field on the WOTA display form.
?
I have modified the AC Log .exe file to interpret the ADIF number and display the corresponding country name.? After you download the updated .exe file,?WOTA will work as it has been, except that the numbers should appear as country names.? To update the .exe file:
?
Please close AC Log 3.0
?
Download the new .exe file by clicking on this link:
?
?
Save the file in c:\program files\aclog 3.0.? There is not a title or version number change with this update.
?
There is nothing that you have to change on the WOTA form.? AC Log will take care of converting your country name to the appropriate number as long as a valid country is entered.
?
As always, thanks for all!

N3FJP Software Announcements - February 2006
开云体育? Hi All, ? Kimberly and I have several software announcements that we would like to share with you. ? Amateur Contact Log 3.0 is now available! ? AC Log 3.0 now supports the newly developed Who’s On The Air (WOTA) database!? In case you missed it the first time, you'll find more information about WOTA later in this e-mail, and you can learn even more by visiting .? To implement WOTA, click Settings > DX Spotting > WOTA, complete the form that appears and click the Participate check box. ? AC Log 3.0 has also been upgraded to read the active VFO (A or B) of Kenwood radios.? If you have a Kenwood, just select Kenwood 2 from the rig list.? I will be adding this feature in the contesting software as time permits. ? Amateur Contact Log 3.0 Download: ? You can download the installation file for AC Log 3.0 from www.n3fjp.com or by clicking on this link:? ? INSTALLATION - Please Remember: ? - Upgrades are free to registered users. - DO NOT remove your previous version until 3.0 is up and running. - Download version 3.0 and install it. - Let the program install in the default AC Log 3.0 directory.? DO NOT install in the same directory as an existing program! - When you start the program for the first time, it will ask if you are upgrading.? Please answer "Yes" and follow the prompts. ? ? International DX 2.7 (stand alone) and International DX Network 2.1 contest logs are now available! ? These programs have been updated to check DX spots against the countries that you have logged by band and display “New Multiplier!” if the country is still needed on the band posted.? In addition, you have the option of automatically posting DX spots as you enter contacts!? Like AC log, these programs can be downloaded from . ? Even though it was a casual effort, we had a blast during the International DX CW contest.? I thought 20 meters would be the best band, but after working 66 separate countries on 40 meters alone with a dipole and 100 watts, I can't wait to see how the phone contest goes! ? Package Upgrade Information: ? If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package ($39) or N3FJP's Software Package and CD ($49) for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. In addition to full use of all these programs, registered package customers are also entitled to receive passwords for any new software that is added to the package and free upgrades to existing programs. ? ? Who's On The Air Database (WOTA) ? DX spotting is great.? We are kept up to date on the stations that are being heard in any given area, and many of us have added to our DX totals and increased our contest results by using DX spotting. ? But DX spotting has its limitations.? Mainly, we are only aware of the stations that someone takes the time to spot.? Many stations that might be of interest to us are never posted.? This means that there is not a way to find most of the stations that are on the air at any given time. ? Now, imagine an Internet database of all active stations with our logging software configured (optionally of course) to upload the following information each time a user changes frequency: ? Call, Country, State, County, Grid, Frequency, Lat, Long ? Here are just some of the applications: ? -? You need County "X".? You can simply query the database to see who is on from that county and where they are operating (the same applies for states, countries, grids, or anything you want to track). . ? -? You haven't caught up with your friend _____ in a while.? Query the database to see if he is on the air and where he is operating.? As long as he is signed in, you can even use WOTA to send him a message to arrange the contact. ? -? You have a schedule, but the frequency you planned to use is occupied.? Simply check WOTA to see where the station you planned to contact is waiting for you. ? -? Is 10 Meters really dead?? Query the database for a list of who is on the band and where they are listening/operating. ? So far, this project is built on a Telnet type of server, but this is just the beginning.? There are lots of neat and informative web page displays and maps that could be developed.? This project can be of value not only to the Amateur Community, but also give us a chance to showcase some of the neat aspects of Amateur Radio to the public.? For that to happen, we need some guys with web experience to join in. ? A separate reflector has been set up for this project.? AC Log WOTA Beta Testers Needed!
?
Hi All,
?
I normally limit requests for beta testers to the N3FJP_Software_Users group, but this project is a little different in that we need LOTS of users to properly beta test this enhancement.? You may recall?me mentioning a database of all amateurs who are on the air just before Christmas.? Well, our Who's on the Air (WOTA) project still has a long way to go, but we are to the point of needing more?hams to participate so that we can give the server a?better workout.
?
If you are running AC Log 2.9 or 2.8 and would like to help out, please do the following:
?
- Close AC Log
?
- Click this link to download the beta exe file:

without relying on the timing of your PC's processor.? It also allows for
more user customized CW settings.? For more details on WinKey, please visit
.
?
Other Contest Software Upgrades:
?
In addition to WinKey, we have?added the ability to easily archive
contest logs for later retrieval.? We've also added a feature enabling
the?addition of?a ! to the CW string to automatically log
the?contact.? For example, if I set the F3 string to: !TU DE
N3FJP, the contact will be logged as soon as I press F3.? This
feature will work with any of the F keys.
?
K7RE RTTY has now?been added to the Field Day programs.? For more
details on K7RE RTTY, please visit: .
?
Amateur Contact Log 2.9 is now available!
?
In addition to adding WinKey to AC Log, we've also added code so that AC
Log creates a permanent backup of your log file once each month
automatically.? These are the only two changes to AC Log.? If the
WinKey feature is not important to you, and you backup your log file regularly,
it is fine to continue with version 2.8.?

Have you ever tried the 160 Meter band??
?
If you've never participated in a 160 Meter contest, you are missing a lot of fun, and I'd like to encourage you to give it a try!? Until the ARRL 160 Meter contest last weekend, I had only made a few contacts on 160. ? I put up an inverted V for 160 a few weeks ago, but I really hadn't had a chance to give it a work out.? I was under the impression that a V would not work very well on 160, and that you really needed something at least partially vertical like an inverted L.? With that in mind, and only running 100 watts here, I figured the contest was a lost cause and pretty much made up my mind not to participate. ? Then Dave, N3HCN, (who is a real good CW op) called about 3 hours before the contest and asked if I felt like lighting up the ether on 160.? I said sure, thinking we would make a few contacts, get frustrated and quit after a few hours. ? The contest started at 5:00 PM local.? By 11:00 PM, 6 hours in, we had 300 contacts!? I had no idea there was so much activity on the band, and that we could do so well with an inverted V and 100 watts. ? We averaged over 50 Qs an hour for 6 consecutive hours!? At times, our 20 minute rate was near 80.? Again, we are small guns here, and I know that rate may not be impressive in the grand scheme, but it was a personal best for us, and we were elated!? We finished the contest with 653 contacts, 66 sections, 5 countries, and we worked every state in the lower 48 except Idaho. ? You don't need a vertical antenna and miles of ground radials to have a blast on 160M.? A simple dipole or inverted V will yield lots of fun! ? 10 Meter Contest! ? The ARRL 10 Meter Contest is this weekend.? We will be operating if conditions warrant so we hope to talk with some of you.? ARRL 10 Meter Contest--0000Z Dec 10-2400Z Dec 11. (See Nov QST, p 105, or www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2005/ 10-meters.html.) ? Future Projects ? We appreciate all the comments and suggestions we receive on a daily basis concerning our software.? At the moment we have a VERY full plate of ideas for?upgrades and a list of new program projects.? We are diligently working on this list to continue to further enhance the enjoyment of the amateur radio hobby through software. ? We do not plan to add any new State QSO Party Logs to our list at this time.? This particular avenue of programming has been a much larger project than we anticipated and is difficult to keep up with due to the?constant rule changes, etc.? We thank all of you who try to keep us up to date concerning these changes.? This is the only way we can stay ahead of the game, and we will continue to do our best to support the logs that we have written so far. ?
The "AC Log Ready" calldata will be updated on January 1,
2006.?You can download this database?freely from the AC Log

?
Just in time for the RAC Canada Contest that begins tonight, N3FJP's
RAC Contest Log 1.5 is now available.
?
In version 1.4, 2 (VE2/VA2) area call signs were identified as QU in the
automatic fill; however, the program will only accept QC. The need to manually
tab over and type in QC is corrected in version 1.5. This problem just came to
light this afternoon, and I apologize for the short notice.
?
Please download version 1.5 from . As always, upgrades are
free to registered users. Enjoy the contest!
?
We are hearing lots of good reports from groups using the software for
Field Day 2005!? Thanks?so much for all of your comments, suggestions

N3FJP Software Announcements - June 2005
开云体育Hi?Everyone!
?
We don't know about the rest of you, but summer has officially arrived as
of last weekend in Northeast Maryland - hot and humid.? I guess it
is?just in time to get used to it before Field Day!
?
Kim and?I?have?some?software announcements we would
like to share with you.
? Amateur Contact Log 2.8 is now available! ?
There are only a couple of truly new features in version
2.8.
?
Awards Display Details by Band
?
The first is the ability to display worked and confirmed details by band
from the Awards forms (on the first Awards form click the detail button, on the
second, click the list title).
?
LoTW
?
The second provides users the ability to change the LoTW upload and
download URLs. Now if LoTW ever moves again,?you will be able to change the
program immediately (for more info on this change see below in 2.7
Enhancements).
?
Country Name Changes
?
Finally, when you upgrade to 2.8, the following country name changes should
be seamlessly updated in your log:
? Pagalu I. > Annobon I. Western Samoa > Samoa Zaire > Dem. Rep. of Congo Gambia > The Gambia San Felix I. > San Felix & San Ambrosio St. Maarten, Saba > St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eust. St. Peter St. Paul Rocks > St. Peter & St. Paul Rocks Malyj Vysotskij I > Malyj Vysotskij I. Belau (W. Caroline Is.) > Palau Congo > Congo (Republic of the) S. Shetland Is. > South Shetland Is. Laccadive Is. > Lakshadweep Is. Revilla Gigedo > Revillagegido Yugoslavia > Serbia & Montenegro Tristan de Cunha > Tristan da Cunha & Gough I. ? New Enhancements Added to 2.7 without a Version Change K7RE RTTY Interface & LoTW Fix
?
As those of you that have been following along know, there have been
several enhancements to 2.7 since it was first released.? They include the
addition of interface with K7RE RTTY. Also, most recently, the fix necessitated
by the LoTW server move. Keeping the version number at 2.7 through these changes
has created some confusion that should be cleared up by this new release.
?
Amateur Contact Log 2.8 Download:
?
You can download the installation file for AC Log 2.8 from or by
clicking on this link:?
?
INSTALLATION - Please
Remember:
- Upgrades are free to registered users.? - DO NOT remove your previous version until 2.8 is up and running. - Download version 2.8 and install it. - Let the program install in the default AC Log 2.8 directory.??DO NOT?install in the same directory as an existing program! - When you start the program for the first time, it will ask if you are upgrading.??Please answer "Yes" and follow the prompts. ?
Customized Main Screen Settings:
If you choose to bring over your customized settings during the upgrade, the location of the data entry fields should be transferred, but you will have to drag your columns back into your preferred position after the upgrade. ?
Multiple Log File Transfer:
?
When following the upgrade instructions, AC Log will only transfer the log
file that was last used.? If you have more than one log file that you would
like to transfer from the previous version, please do the following for any
additional logs:
?
- From the old version click File > Export ADIF Format >
Whole Log.
- From 2.8 Click File > New, and enter the name of the log. - From 2.8 Click File > Import ADIF format and select the file that your exported. - Repeat the above for each file that you wish to transfer. ?
Upgrade
Information: ? If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package ($39) or N3FJP's Software Package and CD ($49) for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. In addition to full use of all these programs, registered package customers are also entitled to receive passwords for any new software that is added to the package and free upgrades to existing programs. ?
Field Day Network
Pointers
?
This year there will be quite a few new groups using the network version of
the Field Day software. The following are responses to questions that I have
received frequently, and I'm listing them here as pointers:
?
- For the messaging features to work properly, the path to the log file
from the computer hosting the log should NOT route through the network. The
client's path must route through the network and begin with \\ (the \\ tells the
software that it is a client and which PC to connect to as the server). For
example, the server's path might be: C:\FD\FDLog.mdb and each of the client's
paths would be: \\Develop\C\FD\FDLog.mdb (assuming the
PC hosting the file was Develop).
?
- Because some versions of Windows can be particular about accessing files
in the c:\program files directory via the network, it is best to create a
separate directory outside of program files on the PC hosting the log file such
as c:\FD.
?
- Make sure that all PCs and your router or hub are on a UPS
(uninterruptible power supply)!?
?
- A backup of all your data is written to every PC connected to the log
file every 15 minutes.? Even if the PC hosting the log file has a
catastrophic failure, you can recover your log from any other PC on the network
by clicking File > Combine or Restore from Backup.?
?
- Don't wait until the Saturday morning of Field Day to install and test
out the software on your network! If you haven't already done so, get the PCs
together before Field Day, hook them up and make sure that each PC is able to
access and update the common data file. Problems solved very easily in a relaxed
atmosphere can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking.
?
We will be operating with the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest
Society (NE3MD) this year at a local public park.? Have fun, and we hope to
work you!
?
WX Project
?
As many of you know, I'm also a weather enthusiast. I've been thinking
about a project along the lines of the Telnet DX spotting network that could be
applied to weather observations and thought I'd share it with you to see if
there is any interest.
?
There is plenty of weather data available, but we continue to hear that
there's no substitute for actual observations when severe weather occurs. I'm
thinking of creating a software application where users could send real time
weather observations along the lines of the Skywarn protocols to a Telnet server
and have those observations distributed to the other users. Users could filter
by state or even zip code so the software could be configured to show only local
observations as the user preferred. This would allow many observations to be
collected and distributed quickly.
?
There is a lot that we could do with a weather client. In addition to
displaying the data in the same scrolling spreadsheet format provided by the
listview control that I use in my logging software, we could have color displays
based on the severity of the observation, audio alerts and even rough mileage
calculations based on the zip code lat/long.
?
This would be a free service, and it isn't something I can do on my own.
Since time is very tight, it would be great if a couple of us could work
together as a group. I could take care of the users client software, but we'd
need someone to write the Telnet server code and someone to run the Telnet host.
This could also be a web enabled application, and we would need someone to help
with that aspect of the project as well.? Please e-mail me directly (not
through the group) at snkdavis@... if you are interested in
participating in this project.
?
As always, thanks so much for your kind words, suggestions and spreading
the word about our software.? We really appreciate it!

Response from LoTW on Download:
Hi All,
?
Here is the response from the LoTW guys?regarding the?download problem:
?
?
Hi Scott
?
here is what we think:
?
It's probably an artifact of us changing servers and DNS taking time to
catch up. It should settle down in hours or days, depending on various
Internet latencies.

Hopefully the updated .exe file I just made available to correct the upload problem along with a little time to correct the download problem will set everything back to normal.

LoTW - Now Download Problem
Hi All,
?
The fix that I just told you about was working fine last night and this morning for both uploading and downloading to LoTW.? The problem had been uploading which does appear to be corrected.? Unfortunately, moments after I sent the e-mail about the updated .exe file to correct the upload problem I received word that there is now a problem downloading that apparently just began.
?
I have an e-mail into ARRL and I'll let you know what develops.? I apologize for the confusion.

N3FJP Announcement - January 2004
开云体育?
?
Hi All,
Kimberly and I have several software announcements to tell you about. N3FJP’s ARRL RTTY Contest Log 1.0 is now available! N3FJP’s ARRL RTTY Contest Log 1.0 includes all the features that you have come to expect in our software including dupe checking, writing submission files, multipliers changing colors when worked, rig interface, DX spotting, etc.? In addition, it will also interface with K7RE RTTY!? As many of you know, we have received lots of requests to support?digital modes?with our software.? While we have always been enthusiastic about the idea, our own digital experience has been limited to packet and?a little PSK 31. Last summer I received an e-mail from Brian, K7RE, (author of QRP Dupe) encouraging support for RTTY.? Knowing Brian's enthusiasm for the digital modes and programming experience, we began discussing the logistics of interfacing two programs as a way to make that happen, and the concept of K7RE RTTY was born! K7RE RTTY is still very much in BETA status, but it's?now ready for users to give it a try and work with Brian to shake out the bugs.??Brian has been working so hard on getting the program ready that he hasn't had the opportunity to set up his website yet.? Once Brian's site is up (probably some time on Monday), you can download the program from: ?
?
In the mean time, you can download K7RE RTTY from the
following link:
?
?
To keep e-mail to a minimum, I will not be sending followup
announcements?regarding K7RE RTTY here.? Be sure and sign up for
Brian's e-mail reflector?so you are kept up on the latest enhancements as
K7RE RTTY works its way though beta status.? I will be
monitoring that reflector as well.? Click here to?send a blank e-mail
to subscribe to the K7RE RTTY e-mail reflector:
?
All questions and support e-mail regarding K7RE RTTY should be
sent to the above reflector or directly to Brian at K7RE@....
?
K7RE RTTY works with the freely available MMTTY engine.? If
you need a copy of the engine, please click the following link and save it in
the same directory in which you unzipped K7RE RTTY:
N3FJP’s ARRL RTTY Round Up Contest Log 1.0 is
free to registered package users.? If you have not registered for the
package or would like information on upgrading to the package, please see the
upgrade information below.
Minnesota QSO Party Log 1.2 is now Available! ?
The MNQP Log has been upgraded to reflect the change for the county
abbreviations from two letter to three letter.? This contest is coming up
in February so be sure to have the latest version on hand.? The upgrade is
free to registered users.
N3FJP's Packet Monitor (BETA 0.4.6) is now available! I started working on a packet program several years ago.? I never had time to work all the bugs out of the program, but with the renewed interest in packet I decided to blow the dust off of the old code and make it available for anyone who would like to use it. ?
One of the neat features of this program is that you can use it to chat
with multiple stations simultaneously when you select conference mode.? All
stations connected to you will see each other's comments.? Our local club
is using this program as we get ready to set up a local bulletin board.
?
