WX Spotting Log 0.2 - BETA Testers Needed!
Hi All, In addition to Amateur Radio, I've always been very interested in weather.? I've had an idea for a while now (I think I may have mentioned it before) about a WX Spots server that would function very much like DX Spotting.? It would give everyone the opportunity to monitor and post, real time weather information along the lines of SkyWarn protocols. We continue to hear that with all the automated data available today, there is no substitute for real time observations during severe weather.? On Monday July the 16th, we had a very minimal tornado touch down a couple miles from our home.? The damage wasn't too bad, but it did wind up closing a major roadway for over a day due to trees and power lines down.? Watching that process unfold on the news, it became obvious how necessary visual reports really are to quickly assess the extent of storm damage, and it got me thinking about this idea again.
In a nutshell, here is the idea: - Everyone (the clients) connect to a server, which relays real time observations back to all clients
- The clients have the option to display all data, or screen by state or county - Audio alerts can be specified by the user based on the?location - A messaging feature is available to allow for communication with other members of your organization (and any other connected users).
I shared this idea on the N3FJP_Software_Users?group a few weeks ago and the response was enthusiastic, so between the code that I have already written for the WOTA server and modules for the logging software, I've cobbled together the basic client and server to perform the described functions. We've been beta testing for about two weeks, and I'd like to get more users on the server to give it a good run through.? You won't find it on the website yet, but if you have an interest in this project,?please download the installation file by clicking on this link: If you are involved in Skywarn or something similar,?right now?is a great opportunity to have the other members of your group to also give it a try since, while in BETA testing, reports are assumed to be fictitious.? Everyone is encouraged to try sending reports and other features to get comfortable with the software.? Please try all the features and let me know of any bugs that?may come to light. Since this project is a little different than my "regular"?logging software, I have set up a separate e-mail group for this project: WXSpots-subscribe@... After you subscribe, please?send e-mail regarding this project?to WXSpots@....? One of the goals of this project is that support will be provided by the user community. As always, thanks?for your support and kind words, and in advance for trying out this program! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com/ Serving the Amateur Radio Community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.
