N3FJP Software Announcements - June 2005
开云体育Hi?Everyone!
?
We don't know about the rest of you, but summer has officially arrived as
of last weekend in Northeast Maryland - hot and humid.? I guess it
is?just in time to get used to it before Field Day!
?
Kim and?I?have?some?software announcements we would
like to share with you.
? Amateur Contact Log 2.8 is now available! ?
There are only a couple of truly new features in version
2.8.
?
Awards Display Details by Band
?
The first is the ability to display worked and confirmed details by band
from the Awards forms (on the first Awards form click the detail button, on the
second, click the list title).
?
LoTW
?
The second provides users the ability to change the LoTW upload and
download URLs. Now if LoTW ever moves again,?you will be able to change the
program immediately (for more info on this change see below in 2.7
Enhancements).
?
Country Name Changes
?
Finally, when you upgrade to 2.8, the following country name changes should
be seamlessly updated in your log:
? Pagalu I. > Annobon I. Western Samoa > Samoa Zaire > Dem. Rep. of Congo Gambia > The Gambia San Felix I. > San Felix & San Ambrosio St. Maarten, Saba > St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eust. St. Peter St. Paul Rocks > St. Peter & St. Paul Rocks Malyj Vysotskij I > Malyj Vysotskij I. Belau (W. Caroline Is.) > Palau Congo > Congo (Republic of the) S. Shetland Is. > South Shetland Is. Laccadive Is. > Lakshadweep Is. Revilla Gigedo > Revillagegido Yugoslavia > Serbia & Montenegro Tristan de Cunha > Tristan da Cunha & Gough I. ? New Enhancements Added to 2.7 without a Version Change K7RE RTTY Interface & LoTW Fix
?
As those of you that have been following along know, there have been
several enhancements to 2.7 since it was first released.? They include the
addition of interface with K7RE RTTY. Also, most recently, the fix necessitated
by the LoTW server move. Keeping the version number at 2.7 through these changes
has created some confusion that should be cleared up by this new release.
?

Field Day Network
Pointers
?
This year there will be quite a few new groups using the network version of
the Field Day software. The following are responses to questions that I have
received frequently, and I'm listing them here as pointers:
?
- For the messaging features to work properly, the path to the log file
from the computer hosting the log should NOT route through the network. The
client's path must route through the network and begin with \\ (the \\ tells the
software that it is a client and which PC to connect to as the server). For
example, the server's path might be: C:\FD\FDLog.mdb and each of the client's
paths would be: \\Develop\C\FD\FDLog.mdb (assuming the
PC hosting the file was Develop).
?
- Because some versions of Windows can be particular about accessing files
in the c:\program files directory via the network, it is best to create a
separate directory outside of program files on the PC hosting the log file such
as c:\FD.
?
- Make sure that all PCs and your router or hub are on a UPS
(uninterruptible power supply)!?
?
- A backup of all your data is written to every PC connected to the log
file every 15 minutes.? Even if the PC hosting the log file has a
catastrophic failure, you can recover your log from any other PC on the network
by clicking File > Combine or Restore from Backup.?
?
- Don't wait until the Saturday morning of Field Day to install and test
out the software on your network! If you haven't already done so, get the PCs
together before Field Day, hook them up and make sure that each PC is able to
access and update the common data file. Problems solved very easily in a relaxed
atmosphere can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking.
?
We will be operating with the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest
Society (NE3MD) this year at a local public park.? Have fun, and we hope to
work you!
?
WX Project
?
As many of you know, I'm also a weather enthusiast. I've been thinking
about a project along the lines of the Telnet DX spotting network that could be
applied to weather observations and thought I'd share it with you to see if
there is any interest.
?
There is plenty of weather data available, but we continue to hear that
there's no substitute for actual observations when severe weather occurs. I'm
thinking of creating a software application where users could send real time
weather observations along the lines of the Skywarn protocols to a Telnet server
and have those observations distributed to the other users. Users could filter
by state or even zip code so the software could be configured to show only local
observations as the user preferred. This would allow many observations to be
collected and distributed quickly.
?
There is a lot that we could do with a weather client. In addition to
displaying the data in the same scrolling spreadsheet format provided by the
listview control that I use in my logging software, we could have color displays
based on the severity of the observation, audio alerts and even rough mileage
calculations based on the zip code lat/long.
?
This would be a free service, and it isn't something I can do on my own.
Since time is very tight, it would be great if a couple of us could work
together as a group. I could take care of the users client software, but we'd
need someone to write the Telnet server code and someone to run the Telnet host.
This could also be a web enabled application, and we would need someone to help
with that aspect of the project as well.? Please e-mail me directly (not
through the group) at snkdavis@... if you are interested in
participating in this project.
?
As always, thanks so much for your kind words, suggestions and spreading
the word about our software.? We really appreciate it!
