As you may know, Wesley is arranging several showings in and around Chicago for early March, which have the fantastic added bonus of Jagna and Aneta coming to the US to be there for the screenings. As John in Auckland and I both know, organising such an event is a major undertaking, and the group owes Wes a big debt of gratitude for furthering our aims of research, remembrance and recognition - especially the latter. ?So having done all this groundwork, of course his dates have priority and his arrangements should go forward as he thinks best. Having said that, if you are in America for 3 weeks, there may be opportunities for you to participate in some other key events while there. ?Certainly, if it fits with your plans, visits to some of the other key centres of the Polish Diaspora would be great if they were possible. Shallow Graves in Siberia

Dear friends,
Recently I found this book on the internet () and ordered it directly from the author, now in his mid-eighties in Bradford, England. "Shallow Graves in Siberia" recounts the story of one young Polish man's daring escape from the Siberian labour camps. After reading Michael Krupa's story, I had new insights into how terrible conditions under the Soviet system really were. I commend the books to anybody seeking insight into the crazy inhuman system of Soviet Communism and into the Siberian camps. I found the contrasts related by Michael, of the human courage and kindness of strangers that allowed him to regain his freedom, especially inspirational. I am honoured to have had these books signed by the author, both in English and in Polish. Though you can order the book from many on-line shops listed in the website, if you go through the site you can actually order a copy with a personalised message from the author (I asked him to write "may the three previous generations be the last of your family to ever be imprisoned in Siberia" - in English and in Polish!) -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia |

Searching for the truth

Back in school in Toronto in the 60's and 70's, my best friend growing up was Ukrainian. His parents wanted the same thing that mine did: to bring up their children in a safe country, free from hate and war. I do remember vividly one incident in the classroom: a Serb and a Croat yelling at each other and putting down each other's nationalities. They were nine years old! This is the kind of blind hate passed on generation to generation by parent to child. It is not a surprise that some Poles and Ukrainians harbour grudges against each other either due to personal experience or due to the centuries long history of borderland squabbles. The truth can hurt but we want to research it, aknowledge it, make our peace with it and learn from it. I would hope that the Ukrainians, Belorussians, Lithuanians, Jews, Russians and Germans want to do the same. Your professor of Political Science should be offered the opportunity to disprove the statements on your site. He is a scientist and should be happy to seek the research that will back up his opinions. Henry |

Personal and "political" discussions

Dear group members,
We have recently had some discussions about other websites and controversial e-mail debates with people about true versions of history. I should remind us all that although our membership is qualified by our common interests, our group is a public group in that all our e-mails are readable by anybody on the web. This is because we want to attract more members who might share our mission to research, remember and recognise what happened to our families. Please restrict discussions of personal e-mails and plans for action against "opponents" to private messages off the list rather than posting them to the group. We also have members from different ethnic backgrounds, and should remember not to cast blame on any entire ethnic groups or nationalities for crimes perpetrated during and after WW2. I understand that the Polish veterans who came to Australia also had to sign up for a couple of years of work (I believe agricultural labour, but possibly also Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme) as a condition of immigration. ?Of course, the Polish Resettlement Corps in UK, which absorbed a large number of soldiers (including my father) after the 2 Corps was disbanded, was a non-combatant but military-organised unit also given these kinds of tasks (road building etc.) in order to integrate them into life in the UK after the war. ?Perhaps this was associated with the "Service Territorial?" In part 18 and 19 it states that he was demobilized from the Polish Forces abroad on Nov. 13 1946 and transfered to Service Territorial. I'm getting a little ahead of myself, the questions I was asking, what are the medals that are listed and what was "Service Territorial"? |

Wieku, by Edward Prus,?will give you the demographic distribution in Poland
before the II World War, and same inside to the Polish-Ukranian relations, the
book was printed by Polprint, 63 Jeddo Rd., London at request of Kolo Lwowian
Londyn 1992.Sooner or later we probably are?going to have to deal with the
Polish-Ukranian reletionship, however as i told Stefan this will have to be done
in a organizational level.
My wife, her sister and myself will be in Poland in
the begining of June (They have a reunion of the individuals that after Syberia
were transported to India), this will be a good ocassion to meet with the
Sybiraks in Poland and at the same time I will visit my relatives in the UK and
I would?like? to meet with you.
