If you wish to research your families records in the Soviet archives, Dr
Alexander Guryanov of the Polish Committee of Memorial in Moscow has
kindly offered to organise searches for our group members.
I believe that the critical information needed to search for a person's
records are: name, names of parents (especially. father's), birthdate,
and place of residence. Ideally, dates of deportation and region
deported
to. What ever you can provide will be a clue.
I suggest that you e-mail Alexander directly at gurpolcom@...,
but if you get any results please share the news with us!>>>
You can write either in English, Polish or Russian. Alexander himself is
Russian and the group is Polish-speaking so these languages are
probably easier for them.

Unfortunately, we have no database on Poles in Kazakhstan. The only
completed database on Poles which we have are:
1. Interned in Borovichi (1944-1949);
2. Interned in Stalinogorsk (1944-1949);
3. Interned in Donbas and near Saratov (1945-1949);
4. Imprisoned in camps of Vorkuta region (1939-1956);
5. Deported to Arkhangelsk region (1940-1941) (in preparation to be
published, in cooperation with Center KARTA in Warsaw).
Databases "Borovichi" and "Stalinogorsk" are exposed at our website
www.memo.ru (in Russian).
Three next databases actually are in preparation:
6. Interned in Ostashkov and Ryazan (1944-1949);
7. Deported to Komi (1940-1941) and
8. Deported to Molotov region (1940-1941).
to make a search in the archives we need
a signed letter (ie not e-mail) to Polish Committee of the "Memorial"
Society containing the maximum information about the person in question
- personal data (first name and name at the time of arrest, first name
of father, year and place of birth), place of living at the time of
arrest, were they deported without
sentence and living as a deportee (in what region? - it is the most
important) or
was the person sentenced and then imprisoned in penal labour camp (in
what region?),
About the E-mail requests to us by members of your "Arkhangelsk group"
for search of their family records:
I think, it will be better, if everybody will have the opportunity to
search in our datebase by himself. For this purpose we will expose this
database at our website in few days. Our computer/internet specialist
told me that
it should be no trouble with reading cyryllic characters using fonts of
Unicode format provided by Windows-98. I will inform you immediately as
the
database will be exposed.

Hello Elizabeth
I am very new to this list (I joined
just a few days ago), but I must say that I think
such a list is an excellent initiative and very
appropriate.
I will be sending more of my details to the list
shortly, but I'd just like to ask a question on this
particular subject.
My mother too was deported to Arkhangelsk on 10 Feb 1940.
She is no longer with us, but her brother is still alive
and I am extremely interested in obtaining more details from
Alexander Gur'yanov.
Would it be OK for me to email him directly? If so
which language, English, Polish or Russian?
Or any of the three?
I'm thinking that we don't want to inundate him with
email requests!

Subject: Polish Committee of the "Memorial" Society
Just a few words about the above:
I recently wrote to Alexander Gur'yanov asking for information in their
database "Polish citizens deported to Arkhangelsk region (1940-1941).
Aklexander wrote back within 2 days with exactly the information we
wanted. He was very helpful, written in good English, attached a letter
in Polish which he did offer to translate if neccessary, and gave
instructions on where to write to get copy of the documents we wanted.
It felt very strange seeing my mother's family names etc on a Russian
document and my mother was very moved by the reply. (She is trying to
get a copy of her sister's death certificate, she died at the age of 14
on Christmas Eve 1940 in Kotlas.)
