Difference between 10mtr Cats ?
7
Hi to the group. K-Design has 3 different models in the 10mtr. range, that i like : the Duo 1000, the KD 1000 and the KD105. I have also seen mentioned on internet, models: Duo 1000S and Duo 1001 but not on the official site (are those maybe slightly altered models ?) . The KD105, i loved from the moment i first saw it a year ago or so. It is a very beautiful design, with too little of information in my opinion. I asked earlier on this group if this model could be altered to gain a bit more space, and Bernd pointed out the Duo 1000 as an alternative. At first i was disappointed and did not pay much attention to it, because i was still under the impression, that a 40footer would be the smallest for my intention of use. After more research and some deliberating, i decided that a 30+ footer could do, if proper designed, and would make more sense to build and to handle. I will happily order the study plans of the duo1000 and Kd1000, but i hope they will give me a bit more information than the KD105 plans that i ordered earlier. I mean there is not much info, other than you can find on the net. I was interested in data as : Free board, Bridge deck clearance, height and beam of the hulls etcetera. Which is in my opinion important info in order to compare the different designs. Also i presume there are more pics (renderings) to find on the study plans of the Duo1000, where i could see the "open" bridge deck with it`s permanent bimini top ? (on the site i can only find a picture of the side, and a screenshot of the layout). So what i am looking for is the difference of the KD105, Kd1000 and duo1000. I can see and imagine that the KD105 is more performance oriented. The KD1000 is more cruising oriented with al it`s internal space, and the Duo1000, sort of in between. When comparing the data of the models, i find out that the biggest difference is the weight and loading capacity. For the KD105 : 1700kg empty - 3000kg displacement KD1000 : 2000kg empty- 4200Kg displacement Duo1000 : 1500kg empty- 3200kg displacement The dynamic stability of the Kd105 is 10,000kgm and the duo1000 18,000 ! and i guess the Kd1000 would be even more higher due to it`s weight. My guess is the different hull-shapes and maybe size of them will make those differences. But what i don`t understand is why the slightly lighter Duo1000 has a better load capacity and higher dynamic stability, than the KD105 even though it`s beam is slightly wider ? Another thing that confuses me is why the KD105 has a main sail of 37m2 whilst being the lightest displacement compared to the Duo has main of 34m2 and the more heavy displacement KD1000 only 30m2 ! ??? Another question i have is about the different rigs and sails. What are the differences, and are they dependable per model or are they exchangeable on the different models ? Aluminium mast and rigging, in good condition can be difficult to find here and import would be too expensive. Carbon flag posts could be imported, if in sections, for shipping. Also i would not mind to build a mast from scratch. Obviously the Kd105 could be fully build in sections, up the finish, and than transported and assembled at a shipyard or even waterside. But what about the KD1000 ? I have seen a video and pictures of a Duo1000 hull hanging on a crane, but it looks to me that it would take me far more time assembling and finishing after transporting the parts to a shipyard. Which would be in my case here very expensive. Little info about us and the intention of use : Not so young anymore couple with cats. Not so much sail experience, but good building skills. Living in Seychelles (island group indian ocean) We would love to explore the beauty of our islands (115 islands) spread over 1,350,000 square kilometers. Living on board for periods of time but not permanently. Mostly we would island-hop in between the inner islands 20 to about 100nm from the main island. Spending lots of time on anchor in beautiful bays. We would only sail when we like and when the season and weather is favorable for the planed trip, especially longer distances to t

ECO 5 (Sailing) versus ECO 6 Sailing?
9
Good day, I am looking for a small sailing catamaran that can do some coastal work (Capetown South Africa). We mainly operate in Falsebay, but the winds do pick up some times. I normally try to pick good weather windows, but we have been caught where the wind picked up above 20 knots - gusting higher. Would the ECO 5 and ECO 6 be able to handle these conditions? Obviously, one would reef both the main and jib accordingly. What is the largest engine that one can fit to these boats? Would a 15HP engine work on the ECO 6, or will it be too heavy. The engine is for when I misjudged conditions, and want to take the boat home (25 knots of wind). IS there a huge time difference when building the ECO 6 versus the ECO 5. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated, Jaco

ECO7 pulling into wind
16
Hello, I live in India and own a ECO7 built by Ultramarine Boat Builders, Pondy. The boat is at Mumbai. I am uploading a photo of the boat. I am not much of a sailor and have only little experience though I have done a couple of longish sails. We (I and a few others) once sailed from Pondy on the east coast of India to Mumbai on the west coast with multiple stops in between. But I have next to nil experience in making adjustments to the boat. Since last year or so the boat has started behaving strangely. Whenever we raise the main sail the boat pulls into the wind. Since we do not sail much we have been living with this problem by making do with only the jib sail as the boat has a 9.9 HP Yamaha OB. Can anyone suggest what adjustment I need to make to rectify this problem? Thanks in advance, Kishor

Difficulty tacking Eco 6
10
Okay all of you experts, I have question for the group which someone may be able to help me with, and perhaps Bernd has a comment as well. One of the only real problems I have with my little Eco 6 catamaran is that it can sometimes be very difficult to tack, and sometimes will not tack around at all. This could be the result of a number of factors; The fitting of the little bilge keels rather than the deeper centerboard option. The hulls have a very deep forefoot. CE of the sails too far aft, I have always experienced weather helm when hard on the wind, but have managed to tune the boat to minimise this as much as possible. Sometimes a lack of boat weight may be a contributor as I have noticed that the little catamaran does not carry its way at all as heavier boats do, so in rougher sea conditions the boat may not have enough weight to carry it through the tack. But I have been following the discussion of the Eco 7 heading up into the wind in an uncontrollable manner and when it comes to rudders the Ackermann Effect has been mentioned a couple of times. Bernd said: I suppose the rudder system is made with an Ackerman effect according to plan. The tillers are straight. To measure the parallelism of the rudders, mark the center on the transom and at the entrance bulkhead. Connect with a rope. Now you can check the parallelism. The plans for my boat and building instructions talk about the tiller cross bar linkage on the inside of the rudder case to achieve the Ackermann Effect, the plans show the cross bar being attached to the aft of the rudder boxes which is well behind the cross beam, so perhaps this is what Bernd is talking about re achieving Ackermann Effect. I have not put my cross bar in this position because it would interfere with the mounting of the outboard motor on the aft beam, so instead my cross bar is mounted across the tillers just in front of the aft beam where it will not interfere with the mainsheet system. This seemed the only logical position for the tiller cross bar. So, has anyone gat any suggestions as to how best achieve some Ackermann Effect with my rudders? I have developed a number of strategies which help with the tacking of my catamaran, but when I read the comments about the Ackermann Effect I wondered if this is perhaps something I have overlooked and so do not have my rudders properly set up. Duo 900 Italy + wing mast
3
Hi Bernd you asked me for developments on my boat. Here are the photos of the Duo 900 finished boat on the outside and the inside is missing to be painted with a small electrical system that will be done in January. I've also finished the wing mast and once the interiors are finished we'll mount it on the boat together with the mainsail and jib. One thing about the wing mast I was careful with the weights but if you build it with central battens inside, it gets heavier. 10.85m long and 38cm wide (central part) weighs 80kg but came out very nice and strong. Hello Bernd and all the forum. I finished grouting the boat with epoxy grout and mounted the pipes: the one at the bow with a diameter of 120mm and the one at the stern with a diameter of 100mm. The stern tube, as you know, will have the function of attaching the rigging of the mainsail to the A-frame mast, therefore having done all the steps of the original drawing and in the end the 8mm cable will be mounted. For the interior, all the electric cables for the boat system have been passed and we are waiting for the side windows of the cabin and in January we start with the interior furnishings, in short, we are proceeding towards the end of the construction. We'll be painting the boat in early February. I'll stop here for the moment and wish you all a merry Christmas Dominic

BIG fillets under the ECO 6 deck
11
Does anyone have a magic technique for placing material overhead for large fillets. The plans for the ECO 6 call for a fillet with a radius of 105mm to cover the 25 x 35mm stringer which carries the deck. After placing the last scarfed panel in place today I had a go at it just to get a sense of what I can expect when I go back tomorrow. A fillet that size takes a lot of material - check out the photo to get an idea. I cut that spatular out with a 105mm radius. Has anyone used the plastic bag system, similar to decorating with cake icing?

BIG fillets under the ECO 6 deck
Hi Rod, one of the challenges was to get the fillet bended around curves, e.g. at the bow. My solution was to cut out stripes that form the shape of the fillet: These stripes were glued on piece by piece: This was filled and shaped with an Epoxy/Microballoons mixture, shaped with a piece of tube as Bernd mentioned below and then glassed: For me it worked like a charm :) Best, Holger

Wishbone-mast-rigging
15
Here is a good way how to rig a wishbone boom to a mast. Last photo The double lines going up and down prevent canting of the boom. But when sailing, the boom stabilizes itself by the sail pressure. The other photos show the wishbone with single ropes only. This is from this very nice monomaran. A new boat I photographed last week in Cannet. Cheers Bernd

Seattle Eco 55 power cat build
58
Hi all, Thought I should say hello, and share my project. I've been building an Eco 55 for a while now, and have a few photos to share. So far, all is progressing well, and it has been mostly fun. :) I'm planning on electric propulsion, with an Elco EP-20, a 100 AH lithium battery bank (can expand to 200 AH if needed) and whatever amount of solar panels will fit. It's certainly an experiment, but after thinking it over, I believe it's worth a try. Anyway, as I continue to make it look more like a boat, I'll post again with new pics. Jim

Eco 65 houseboat "Galadriel"
52
Hi guys, please let me introduce myself to you. My name is Holger, I'm living in Rostock, Germany at the Baltic Sea coast. Last month I started to build the next ECO62 house boat. It's a stretched to 6,5m version and will get a more semi classic superstructure design, so I call it Eco 65 classic ;-) I've been watching G¨¹nters and Jens' building progress from the beginning, we are in contact contineously sharing our experiences. As you can see in my album, I'm working with simple tools using a hobby room in my house, since the weather outside does not allow any working with epoxy. I've just finished building the bulkheads and the stems (whithout the cutouts). Next step will be building the bended parts of the stringers. From April to October, when the yachts are in the water, the building site will be a large boat shed at my sailing club. Until then I'll prepare the smaller parts. I'll keep you up to date here, if you are interested, you may also watch my progress in our German community: https://www.boote-forum.de/showthread.php?t=270028 By the way, this my second boat building. The first one was a kayak that I designed and built 2 years ago. It's a 4,80m double seater from cheap plywood and was inspired by Jim Michalaks Toto. If you are interested, you may read this little story about it (in German): https://www.boote-forum.de/showthread.php?t=255624 Have a nice evening (or whatever it is at your site), best, Holger

Photo album added
22
In response to Bernd's request, I have added an album which shows the start of my work on my ECO 6. As Bernd says, this forum is successful only when we share, and I have already gained a great deal from the discussions and the photos previously added by other members. Frankly speaking, if it were not for the generous offerings of photos and commentary by David Thatcher regarding his build, I am not sure I would have undertaken this project. The two previous sailboats I built followed much different methods than what is used in this design so for me it has required acquiring considerable new knowledge. David's photos gave me the reassurance it was possible to build a boat from the plans which Bernd supplies and so I am on it. I will post again as the project unfolds. This Forum is an invaluable asset. Thank you, Bernd, thank you, David T. and thank you Forum members.
