Interesting. Out of box failures on coils are not uncommon. I'd be interested to hear the resistance numbers, but more interested to hear if the new coil resolves the issue. It may need a ballast

Coils don't change timing. Failed condensers often don't stop an engine from running, but the points will wear quickly. Points wear changes timing, but doesn't necessarily make it inconsistent. I
