Who maintains the JMT? 8
I make it a practice of donating money to the organizations who maintain the trails I hike each year. Aside from PCTA are there non-profits that maintain the JMT? Does the Yosemite Conservancy do any maintenance within the national park? Judy McGuire

Tuolumne Meadows Backpackers Campground 4
All I can find for an opening date of the Tuolumne Meadows Backpackers Campground is that it will be closed until 2025. Since there is no "through 2025", I assume that it may open next year. Am I correct? Does anyone have good intel on the opening? Thanks, Rick

UL Tents 44
Hello: I have updated (and unweighted) my sleeping bag (to a quilt) and pad and am now tackling the bear canister, backpack, and tent to prepare for the JMT next year, I hope. On the bear canister, I am planning on switching to the Bearikade Weekender or Blazer, which will shave off 8 to 10 oz from the BV500 I have On the backpack, I am leaning towards the GG Maripoa, which will shave 2+ pounds from my current backpack On the tent, I am leaning towards the Durston XMid, but would like to hear from others who have used it. How does it do on granite? I have always used freestanding tents and wonder how the staking would work at a place like Guitar Lake (between Crabtree Meadow and Whitney Portal). And, how do these tents do on a windy day? I ask because I just completed the High Sierra Trail. We had one extremely windy night at Guitar Lake. I staked my freestanding tent using rocks and wonder how things would work with the XMid. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find a YouTube video showing the tent setup on granite. Also, several of the trekking pole tents use Dyneema, which is significantly lighter -- how does Dyneema hold up long term? Pros and cons between DCF and silnylon or silpro? Thanks in advance, CJ

Carrying a bearikade on a small ZPacks pack
Question for the group: I’ve been using an Arc Haul Zip 65L (or maybe 60( for the last few years and have kept my Bearikade Expedition inside the pack. I just bought an Arc Haul Ultra 40 and added the v straps for securing a bear can. Given the straight sides of the bearikade I’m wondering how well it will hold and if I need to put something with more friction (like some stick on Velcro pads on the outside of the can to hold the straps in place. Any thoughts from anyone using a similar setup? I could just continue to use my 65 and reserve the 40 for trips that don’t need the bear can, but I really like the compact setup. GPS SOS routing and delay 4
This isn't strictly JMT-related, but hopefully acceptable anyway. I was reading an article about a Death Valley employee who went for a hike, had some route confusion, ran out of water and had to SOS on his Garmin. Excerpt below. My question is, what is the routing of an SOS to explain why it was 1:40 between pushing the button and the cognizant NPS et al receiving the message? I read another article about the hiking group that found the remains of Julian Sands on Mt. Baldy. They hit the SOS button and had a response in 8 mins. (which I thought was pretty amazing). The DV excerpt: "By 4:30 p.m., his water bottle was empty, and “heat and dehydration caught up with him,” officials said in the news release. That’s when he fainted and fell. “After an unknown period of time, he woke up bruised and realized it was time to call for a rescue,” the news release read, noting he used the SOS function on his Garmin tracking device at around 6 p.m. to get help. NPS rangers and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received the call at 7:40 p.m."

More questions about Yosemite area
Thanks for all the info about mosquito and wasp activity. Now I have two more questions. We’re going from Virginia Lakes south through Tuolumne to Happy Isles in early September and have two questions. 1. Does anyone have information on the current availability of water in Cold Canyon (north of Glen Aulin). 2. Can anyone share information or routes going cross country from Lower to Upper McCabe Lakes? Any other information is welcome and appreciated. Hope everyone is having great trips and is prepared for cooler weather. We had 50 mph wind gusts up near Carson Pass last Saturday! Shortest way from JMT (arriving from HI) to Tuolumne Meadows store & PO 5
Not sure how much construction is getting in the way of travel around Tuolumne Meadows. What's the shortest way to get to the PO/Store from JMT arriving from the Valley? Thanks Judy McGuire

Return to Car Strategies 6
I start a SOBO solo hike on the 24th. Because of my plans I will be leaving my truck at Tuolumne Meadows and heading out immediately. I am asking for your strategy or take on returning to TM. I know about both YARTS and EST, but any help will ease my anxiety over not connecting effectively. -Thanks, Rick

sturdiest tortilla chips backpacker and guacamole 4
On Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 06:42:03 AM PDT, judithsmcguire <judithsmcguire@...> wrote: BTW those Pringles tortilla chips are no longer made My recipe is adapted from the Backpack Gourmet 5 cloves garlic 2 scallions 15 oz black beans, rinsed and drained 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted 3 ripe tomatoes, chopped juice of 1 fresh lime (2 Tablespoons) 1/2 t chili powder 1/4 t salt. Actually I replace tomatoes with my favorite salsa (Safeway Southwest Style Hot). When I use salsa I skip the chili I sometimes add a couple of ears' worth of corn Add cumin (lots) Add Olive oil Add cilantro Wooze it up in the food processor until it's paste like Dry on parchment paper Break up dried hunks (sometimes in food processor) Recipes says to take 2 oz (dry) servings. I find this about right. To make home made tortilla chips cut thick tortillas (Trader Joe's are too thin) into 6 pie pieces, spray of both sides with olive oil, salt. Toast at 350 until crisp. Another trick for lunches is cutting bagels cross wise (so you produce little rounds) spray with olive oil, salt, toast at 350 until they are crispy. Very good with dried hummus. Judy McGuire

sturdiest tortilla chips 4
I'm quite fond of my homemade dehydrated black bean salsa for lunch and tortilla chips go mighty well with it as an eating utensil. I have made my own tortilla chips from thick corn tortillas in the past but wonder whether any commercial tortilla chips can withstand being packed in a bear canister that's not overstuffed. I don't want to take fresh tortillas. Recommendations? Judy McGuire

PCT Section G & H Trek & Rae Lakes Campsites 5
So, in late June I started an epic PCT Section G and H NOBO trek. Didn't quite have the stamina and willpower to do the whole thing (going past Kearsarge Pass was always a long shot from the very beginning of planning, but I kept it on the schedule since... what the heck, it's there). BUT am planning on hitting the trail again next weekend from Onion Valley. Only have the first 6 days for the early part of the trek written up so far, but you can find how I did from Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows and if I survived or not (no spoilers :) ). Don't think I'll have time to write up ALL of the rest of the days before I hit the trail again, but maybe I'll have some time this weekend to do some of the days. https://wandering.earth/index.php/2024/06/23/pacific-crest-trail-pct-section-hikes-2024-walker-pass-to-mt-whitney-to-kearsarge-pass-and-beyond/ I actually had my NOBO daily mileage and campsite wish list written up within a couple months of finishing the JMT SOBO in 2020, so just had to tweak it. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll be able to stop at Rae lakes. Since I've taken a Zero Month instead just a Zero day or two, I'm going to have to get re-acclimatized to the elevation (probably at a Mammoth hotel). So, may have to stop before Glen Pass (or maybe even Kearsarge Lakes to start with a short day and acclimatize more there) to camp the first night if I can't push to Rae lakes on the first day (12-13 miles for my first day cold start on the trail is a bit long for me). But I still wanted to ask here about people's favorite Rae Lakes campsites and why they are their favorites in case I do make it there for a night.

good freeze dried food sources 9
I usually dehydrate my own food but prep got delayed this year. Anyone recommend good sources of freeze dried food - especially to mix and match into my own dinners? I tend toward vegetarian but I'm not religious about it. Thanks Judy McGuire

Reds Meadow/Mammoth Exit NOBO 10
Am planning to do NOBO staring at Kennedy Meadows and exiting at Reds Meadow. But just discovered Reds Meadow Road and associated trail exits are closed during the week this summer due to road construction. Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative exit path to Mammoth? Trail entry/exits closed include Beck Lake, Fern Lake, Fish Creek, High Trail, John Muir Trail North of Devil’s Postpile, John Muir Trail South of Devil’s Postpile, Minaret Lake, River Trail and Shadow Creek. They are open on the weekend, but plans would bring me to Reds during the week.
