High altitude training before JMT 26
Last time I did the JMT I was lucky enough to do a circuit of the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite before setting out. This year, Yosemite is getting so restricted that it's not hospitable to training hikes for the time before my hike (hopefully starting late august). Being a flatlander, I need that acclimatization. Any suggestions on public transport accessible, easy permitting, high altitude hiking/backpacking options not too far from Yosemite good for 5 or so days of hiking (combination of dayhikes and backpacking)? Thanks Judy McGuire

Locked Please don't write to this group to reverify -- Here's what to do 3
I've got a small group of my own (about 30 hikers in the SF Bay Area) in addition to being a member here. I've been following all this closely for my little group and for a few others I know who are group owners. Only a fraction of the members in most groups need to re-verify. Bruce noted 62. That's about 2% of this group. Most of those are on custom domains or other "small" domains. If you your mail is on gmail or Yahoo or some such, you are definitely not on the list. To reverify, the standard way is to the respond to the e-mail that got sent out. The last one went out Sunday, January 28. There were three earlier ones. The second-to-last one was on the 24th. The subject line was "Action Required: Confirm Your 开云体育 Membership to Continue Receiving Group Emails.” If you think you may have missed the e-mail (or thought it was a phish), the back-up way to re-verify is get onto the JMT group website. Just showing up there, logged in, is enough. If you have a password and have done that before, go do. But you don’t need a password to get in. Go to the main 开云体育 website, /. If you name shows up at the upper right, you are already logged in. If you needed to be re-verified, you’ve just done it. If not, find the “Log In” button in the upper right and click it. On the login screen, put in your e-mail address – the one where you get your JMT e-mail. Click the button “E-mail me a link to log in.” (Clicking “Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?” does the same thing.) 开云体育 will send an e-mail to that address. Find it. In it will be a link to Log In. Click it, and you are in … and done. 98% of the folks here don't need to do this, but logging in does remove all doubt. But let me repeat. A posting here does absolutely nothing for the reverification. Bruce can't do anything directly. And most people haven't been asked. Jim Ringland

Virginia Lakes to TM to Happy Isles 7
Hello, My brother and I have done the JMT from TM to Mt. Whitney. We want to complete it by going from Tuolumne Meadows to Happy Isles, this summer. What I would really like to do is go from Virginia Lakes to Glen Aulin to TM to Happy Isles. It appears I can get an entry permit at Virginia Lakes. Will this permit legally get us all the way to Happy Isles? Thank You Chuck Fannin

PLEASE STOP THESE MEANINGLESS REQUESTS!
You guys! PLEASE quit flooding everyone's email! First off, you are not supposed to be responding to that notification. Secondly, you probably are almost certainly NOT one of those about to be removed from the list. READ CAREFULLY! How much has the JMT changed in the last 14 years? 20
I have the 2009 Harrisons map set which I bought for my 2010 JMT hike. I see he no longer prints maps but you can buy them in electronic form, which I'm less wild about. Has much changed on the actual route of the JMT in the last 15 years? I know the regs and permits have changed a lot. I presume these maps are perfectly fine but willing to be convinced otherwise. Getting back to civilization from Muir Trail Ranch 23
Thinking of doing a half-ish JMT this year ending at JMT. Is there a relatively easy way to get back to civilization from there? Thanks Judy McGuire

Red's Meadow Road construction
INYO NF updated their Red's Meadow Reconstruction page. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/alerts-notices/?cid=fseprd1127643 Here are some highlights from the closure notice, see link for more details. Red's Meadow road will be closed M-Th, June 17 - September 15, 2024. It will be open for Independence and Labor day holidays. No permits will be issued for trailheads accessed by the road on closed days. Recreation.gov already shows no permits available for those days. Parking at trailheads will be permitted, but there will be no access during closed days. All NF and NPS campgrounds will be closed this year. Frank -- Frank

Late season impressions Rae Lakes Loop 9
Hi All, A few month ago I received some welcomed encouragement by this group to head out for a late session Rae Lakes Loop. So I entered via Kearsage Pass and had a great time, almost solo due to the fact that roads over in SeKi were still closed. Plenty of bear sightings and captured some great time lapses. Let me share a short video with these late season impressions with you. I'll try to go out agin this year in October, it's a great time. Rick https://youtu.be/cnKcWvOfI3A

Looking for suggestions on hiking southern half of JMT - permittng etc 6
Howdy group! My husband and I hiked the northern part of the JMT and exited at MTR back in 2016. This summer (Aug/Sept) we were hoping to hike the southern piece, between MTR (roughly) and Mt Whitney. Things seemed to have changed A LOT regarding permitting etc and wanted to pick your collective brains on what you'd suggest. Our time is somewhat flexible, but wanted to start trying for permits to hike in August. Thanks for any help, it's been a while so I'm just starting to refresh on entry points and permitting locations etc. Fraun

JMT 2024 12
Hi All, I had originally planned to return to the JMT this year but didn't because of the late snow and the San Joaquin river bridge being out. Is there any information if it might be repaired for 2024 or the same bypass route will remain be in place. Apologies, if this has probably already been discussed on a thread, and as always, many thanks for all the help and advice from this group. Geraldine.

Bad news for the bighorn sheep 9
Not strictly a JMT topic, but pretty close. Apparently the big 22-23 winter was especially harsh for the bighorn sheep of the Eastern Sierra; it was estimated that the population declined 40% over the winter, from 600 to 360. Some herds were considered to be entirely wiped out through a combination of avalanches, food scarcity, and predation by mountain lions when they moved to lower elevations to get out of the snow. https://laist.com/news/climate-environment/sierra-nevada-bighorn-sheep-deaths-winter-california-snow-mountain-lion

Annual Fee for 开云体育 5
Hi All, My hat's off to those of you that braved the conditions this year to tackle some or all of the JMT. My last thruhike of the JMT was in 2016 and it was easy compared to this past season! I did a thru-hike of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail last month. It is a "rail trail" that runs from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh for 148 miles. 95% of the traffic is bicycles. The trail is perfect. The trail is mostly paved-over railroad tracks. It goes through some beautiful country, mostly farmland. If you're interested in doing a trail that is much more modest in climbing I recommend looking at rail trails. My wife and I thru-hiked the C&O Canal trail last year -- where the C&O ends the GAP starts. The 2 trails together go from Washington DC to Pittsburgh in 330 miles. I have good and bad news: bad: Our annual $220 bill for group.io just arrived good: because of the genorosity of you folks last year we have $612 on reserve so we're ok on fees for nearly three more years. -- Byron Nevins Lead Moderator of JMT at groups.io
