Looking for suggestions on hiking southern half of JMT - permittng etc

Howdy group!

My husband and I hiked the northern part of? the JMT and exited at MTR back in 2016.? This summer (Aug/Sept) we were hoping to hike the southern piece, between MTR (roughly) and Mt Whitney.? Things seemed to have changed? A LOT regarding permitting etc and wanted to pick your collective brains on what you'd suggest.? Our time is somewhat flexible, but wanted to start trying for permits to hike in August.

Thanks for any help, it's been a while so I'm just starting to refresh on entry points and permitting locations etc.

Fraun

Hi Fraun,
?
in June 2022 I started from VVR (Bear Ridge trailhead) southbound. I was the ONLY ONE in the whole week who claimed a permit at the ranger station. OK, this was June 4th, quite early, but it may be relatively easy to get such a permit.
?
Just checked at
https://www.recreation.gov/permits/445858/
for July: each day all 6 permits available, only on Sat 7/6 4 ot of 6 are reserved. Latest date available today is 7/10.
?
If you want to make a reservation of such a permit, get an account for recreation.gov, and?go to this page exactly 6 months before your prefered date. The permits become available at 7am PST. Chose permit type "Overnight exiting Mount Whitney" and a group size of 2. -?Make a test run of the process before, to see how it works, you can cancel anytime before you pay.

I found two seasons ago that permits entering at MTR (Florence entry point) were quite easy to come by. Sierra Mountain Shuttle can get you there from Fresno. Taking the ferry across Florence Lake saves miles on your way to MTR.

Enjoy!

Hi Henning

How did you handle transportation back?

thank you

Richard

Hi Richard,
?
I fear my answer won't help you. ;)
?
I am from Germany. I did the whole tour without a car. Was flying in via SFO to Fresno, walked from the airport to a nearby hotel, let me pickup there the next midday from the shuttle service run by Jim, the former owner of VVR. On the way back I hitchhiked from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine, took the ESTA bus next morning to Lancaster, the metro railway to LA Union station, the flyaway bus to LAX, and after a shuttle bus tour to and from motel 6?flew home?the next morning.
?
I guess one can get from Ridgecrest (ESTA stop) via Lake Isabella to the West of the Sierra, and then somehow to Fresno. But this is something the locals must answer. In August one may also use the YARTs bus to go from Owens valley via hwy 120 to the west.

We did pretty much what you suggest. Northern half in 2006 and southern half in 2008. After doing the AT in the 3 previous years, it was?absolutely wonderful. ?Had to do a little hitching to get out, but it worked splendidly! ?Great piece of trail!!
