Can you link us to where you are seeing these numbers?? I haven't seen them, and they did not come up in the zoom call.

Can you provide the specific links to the pages you are referring to?? This is really hard to follow second-hand

I'm not? the poster above but here is some Yosemite website
sources I've been looking at.
Yosemite page discussing move to recreation.gov,
.
"How will the
Donohue Pass exit quota work?"
...
"As before, the quota
for Donohue Pass exits is 45 people:
Lyell Canyon trailhead:
Permits for 30 people (18 by reservation, 12 first-come,
first-served one day in advance).
Happy Isles
pass-through: Permits for 15 people (9 by reservation, 6
first-come, first served one day in advance)."
The above page states there will be no changes to trailhead
quotas, but there only 10 (6/4) Happy Isle Pass-Through permits
available shown on the trailhead information page,
.

The discrepancy is easily explained.? The trailheads information page is current 2021 information, which will apply through the end of the current quota season.? Note that it includes a JMT/Donohue quota for Sunrise Lakes and Glacier, which will not be JMT/Donohue trailheads next year.
The FAQ page??? ???? Is? for next year, the 2022 season.? The total JMT/Donohue is the same? - 45 -? but allocated differently: 15 to LYV and 30 to Lyell. Those who have followed my comments on this here and on the Facebook pages, will understand that? I consider this reallocation, now fully 2/3 of Yosemite JMT permits starting in Tuolumne, up from the 55+ percent established in 2015, to be a significant step to recognizing? Tuolumne as the principle northern terminus of the JMT.

Thanks Frank; that information regarding Donohue exit permit numbers was originally posted here:
It was only recently added to the general wilderness permit FAQs to which you linked, repeated here:
Apologies for not responding earlier - I receive these in digest form, and also don't monitor gmail regularly.
Thanks, Larry

On Topic: Talk about impact! The eighteenth annual YOSEMITE FACELIFT? is occurring this week! Over one million pounds of debris was hauled out during the first ten years of this volunteer campaign to RESTORE? and RETAIN THE GLORY OF THE YOSEMITE! Sponsored by the National Park Service and the Yosemite Climbing Association. Irresponsible behavior by humans is an ongoing battle to keep our wild lands as pristine as possible. Happy Isles, the start of the John Muir trail, is one of the most littered places in the Valley! Influencing others to be respectful stewards of the JMT would be appreciated by those of us who volunteer for the betterment and health of the mountain scenery and all who enjoy it. Check out the Yosemite Facelift website. Thank You All! Steve Thaw, Moraga, California?

Put in my first Yosemite lottery application today for the July 4th week. (not for the JMT, some in-park hikes)
I noticed they only have "Happy Isle>Past LYV (Donahue Pass eligible)" as well as "Happy Isles to LYV".
That's a little concerning that the JMT permits for Happy Isles are part of the same pool of permits that people wanting to camp around the Half Dome junction or down towards Merced Lake. I know that they say the Donahue Pass exit permits are the same number, but now people not doing the JMT will likely find getting the LYV pass through permits harder to get.
Not the end of the world, but might affect future hikes for me.
Not too fond of the $10 lottery fee that is non refundable even if you don't get a permit either.
|
Looks like with the exclusion of GP, Sunrise and HI->LYV permits from "Donohue eligibility", the compromise was to open the full daily quota of HI->past LYV to JMT hikers.
I appreciate this probably isn't your permit preference, but worth noting that the Yosemite Permit Quota page indicates that they have increased the HI->LYV daily quota from 30 to 45, and the HI->Illilouette daily quota from 5 to 30, presumably to compensate for the reduced permit availability at other trailheads in 2022 (and beyond?). Hopefully they will eventually reinstate some of the "non-Donohue" HI->past LYV quota...
|
Lange, so how is the left overs from Lottery permits working out now ? Are we suppose to apply for them directly ones the lottery eligible week is closed ? When they are not yet “ walk -ups “? I love the increase of Illiluette quota ? Karina Bezkrovnaia

"July 4th WEEK". Basically, July 1st and 2nd are the first possible start dates for me for that week. The lottery is for the start date.

Hi Karina - that I don’t know. I’d assume the walk-ups will operate like last year? Looks like there are 6 for HI-LYV pass through and 12 for Lyell. Unclaimed or returned permits I’d assume will be the same - frequently check the available permits and if you see one pop up then apply directly for that date and hope you get it? TBH I’m not sure how or if the recreation dot com booking system will be linked to the Yosemite full trailheads report?
Inga is probably the best source of information on the nuances of the permit system this year…

From the
Yosemite wilderness permits page? :
"Twelve days after the lottery application period begins
for any given week (i.e., the Friday 22 weeks in advance),
reservations for all trailheads that still have space will
become available (until seven days in advance) at 9 am PT. Any
later cancellations will become available immediately."
Looks like
they plan to revert to the pre-covid method for walk ups.
"Permits are available in-person on a first-come, first-served
basis at permit issuing stations starting at 11 am one day
before intended start date."
I would think
that they would remove the full trailheads report since that
information is available on recreation.gov.

Hi Lange, Thank you for so much detail! I will ask the trail Yodas :) It is all so confusing…. I liked the trailhead quays chart - it was easy to operate and act accordingly.

Yeah seems like keeping the full trailheads report going would require manual updates from rec dot gov, and for what purpose if YNP isn’t running the permit reservations anymore?
Still seems like the logistics of getting to Lyell trailhead will be interesting with the campground closed, which might actually make it easier to score a walk-up since presumably everyone will need a ride into TM the morning of (maybe there will be early morning traffic jams into TM?).

Lange: >?and for what purpose if YNP isn’t running the permit reservations anymore
Its still the same folks running the permit program, they are just not using their own platform anymore. I recently had my Wilderness /Half Dome Permit Application incorrectly cancelled and they were very quickly able to fix that issue. They were very nice and helpful. I was glad to be able to speak to a human person despite the move to recreation.gov.
Happy Trails!

Aha! Good to know there are still knowledgable humans behind the web interface. I just tried to look up the Full Trailheads Report (which I now recall had switched to a more interactive version last year hosted on the Yosemite Conservancy website). The YNP website still links to the Conservancy website when you look up Full Trailheads Report, but the Conservancy website now just points to Rec dot gov for permit availability. I guess that answers that! However, the Conservancy website does say:?
