Does anyone remember the summer of 1980? We encountered significant snow requiring precarious off trail travel in places between Forester and Whitney and down to Trail Camp in early August 1980. My memory is that it was 200% of normal that year, but I've never been able to track down the records. Does anyone know?
|
Currently, snow sensors close to the JMT are tracking equal to or exceeding 2017, and for the few with data back to the winter of 82/83 they are general equal. Big start to winter!
The thing that made 2017, 2019, 1983, 2011 etc really exceptional was the sustained snowfall through March, where snow pack generally peaked. So the real test this winter will be if this craziness keeps up (or even reverts to a less intense, more normal snowfall pattern), for two more months.
If that happens, it could set usual spring schedules back by 4-6 weeks and July could look like a usual June with snow and water everywhere, and the peak melt off occurring well into July, making hazardous creek crossing conditions, and steep snow hazards on passes and around lakes. July 2017 was a lot like that, and August hikers that year said there was still lots of lingering snow at high elevations.?
If things really dry up, given that the snow pack in most places is already equal to the April 1 average (2.5 months early), you could still probably expect more-than-usual snow in July, but when it starts to melt it melts really fast so it might be muddy, wet and buggy, but otherwise fine for hiking.
But of course, this is all crystal ball gazing¡

Take a look at this page and look at the 1983 winter you are recalling, as well as some of the other big years like 2017 and look at the trends.
For sure, it is ahead of both those high snow level years, but if there isn't any late spring snowfall and the temperatures warm early, it will change what July and August will look like.? That said, at this point I would anticipate something like the summer of 2017 with snow covered passes in early August. On Thu, Jan 12, 2023, 6:29 PM Derek Koonce < derek@...> wrote:

1983 was the year Alpine Meadows ski resort had their avalanche session. The whole ridge broke during one storm. The result: *?? Summit chair lift had the walls blown in and out the other side *?? A gal was trapped in the chair house, under a bench, for a week until it was safe enough to get her out. *?? The 2nd floor of the Alpine Meadows lodge was filled 2/3 with snow. *?? The Alpine Bowl chair had snow that was 10 feet ABOVE the top of the chair lift towers. *?? The powder skiing a couple of weeks later was just FANTASTIC!!! Light, dry powder that was hip deep, and drifts at least 5 feet.
Pretty wild ski season.

Too early to tell. The storms could stop rolling in next week, and the temps could go up and melt everything, or it could keep snowing and there could be a cold Spring and none of the snow would melt.?

Are you able to enter your information like name and number in your party before 7 am and then at 7 am pick your trailhead or does it all start at 7 am? ? OMG, what a crazy adrenaline rush. Just got permits for July 8th.? 0 available at 7am. I keep hitting "next week" and "previous week", but it does not refresh. I panic, hit the refresh?button in the browser, enter details, and suddenly only 6 permits are left. Grabbed the permits.
This is not for the faint of heart.? All 24 permits were gone within a minute. On Fri, 16 Dec 2022 at 10:43, Anand Kumar Sankaran via <anand.sankaran= [email protected]> wrote: Thanks Ravi and Paul.
You want Horseshoe Meadow trailhead over Cottonwood Pass. Cottonwood Lakes leads to New Army Pass. Some JMT hikers go? New Army but overwhelming majority go Cottonwood Pass.
Paul Fretheim East Side Sierra Shuttle? 760 878 8047?
Hi all
I am planning to hike from Horseshoe Meadows to Onion Valley next summer.
I see that there are two trailheads.

I thought I should use JM39, but when I look at the map of the trails:
My understanding is we have to cross Cottonwood Pass and head towards Chicken Spring Lake (Inga's book suggested that is a good place to stay for the first night).
The map indicates Cottonwood lakes trailhead does not cross the pass, but that is the one marked as JMT.? However, that is the trail with permit requirements and limits.
Which trailhead should I use?
Thank you.
