Re: Thoughts on Snow Pack for mid-July to Mid Aug hike
I hiked the JMT in mid to the end of August in 2017 and the mosquitos were pretty much everywhere, but I only found them to be bothersome during the day a couple of places.? It was more what you would expect, around dusk and in places near water.? I'm guessing it was typical of a month or 45 days earlier in an average(there is no normal in CA) snow year. I will say that I'm glad I did it when I did as the scenery was simply spectacular and by that time the snow covered passes were easily manageable, with well defined routes.? I gained some snow hiking experience and confidence, without the risks and difficulty of hiking it a month earlier. I happened to talk to a couple in Lone Pine at the bus stop a couple of days prior to my start and they were just off the trail.? They looked tired as you might expect, but in addition they didn't look happy.? Perhaps they were just exhausted, buy they didn't seem to have enjoyed the experience.? ?I can't say if it was all due to the conditions, but I recall them mentioning that as an issue for them. 开云体育Realize that January has been somewhat of a slow start given the amount of snow in December.? Just remember that in 2018/ 2019, the year of Snowzilla, we had a great start in November but no real additional snow until the end of January and then didn’t stop until late April. ?No one has been able to predict with certainty in January the snow totals for February and March. ? Re: Thoughts on Snow Pack for mid-July to Mid Aug hike
Hello Sam - Not sure if you are also a member of the JMT Facebook group, but there is quite a bit of snow chat there. I've been posting periodic updates there of snow sensor data from near the trail for the past few years, and will do so this winter/spring too.
As a general comment on hiking the JMT after a big snow winter: it does raise some objective hazards (swollen creeks, steep snow, thin snow bridges, hidden hazards, sun cups, etc). I started my hike in early July 2017, a very big snow year, and all those things were relevant. Some people hated it and got off trail within a couple days. Others (like myself) just accepted the conditions and in the end I enjoyed the snow sections more than the dry trail. A key issue is that there's water everywhere, and wet feet becomes a way of life. However, there is a strange little window before too much snow has melted where the mosquitoes aren't that bad. I was amazed how easy I got off - a couple crazy bug sections but they were few and far between. Must have been either too cold or too much moving water for the bugs to hatch. All that said, after big December storms it's been flat line for the past two weeks. Basically there is no telling how hiking conditions will pan out until April or May - in the meantime all the speculation is just for fun. |
Re: Yosemite permits on recreation.gov
Aha! Good to know there are still knowledgable humans behind the web interface.
I just tried to look up the Full Trailheads Report (which I now recall had switched to a more interactive version last year hosted on the Yosemite Conservancy website). The YNP website still links to the Conservancy website when you look up Full Trailheads Report, but the Conservancy website now just points to Rec dot gov for permit availability. I guess that answers that! However, the Conservancy website does say:? |

Follow along here:? I do wish we’d have another high snow year though, we need the water + high snow Sierra hikes are epic! Happy Trails |
Re: Thoughts on Snow Pack for mid-July to Mid Aug hike
First, I think it's WAY too early to worry about the snow pack right now. But, yeah, to your point, I went out on the JMT in July/August of 2017 when there of 200% of average snow pack. It sucked. Snow covered passes, raging creeks, muddy trails, and mosquitoes for days.??

Re: Resupply and rest day in Independence at Mt. Williamson Motel

?We stayed in the Independence Inn and had Jim, the Innkeeper, shuttle us to and from the trailhead.? Highly recommended!? Probably less expensive.? Accommodations are very good. Centrally located (across the highway from the other place, where our experience was rated not so great).
You can call Jim from Kearsarge Pass and receive an individualized shuttle, also probably less expensive and also tailored to your needs.? Of course, you'll want to communicate your plans in advance to Jim.
Jim's hiker box was deluxe when we visited, see report.? I believe that it's for Inn guests.?
More fantastic stuff in this trip report, although probably not what you seek

>?and for what purpose if YNP isn’t running the permit reservations anymore Its still the same folks running the permit program, they are just not using their own platform anymore. I recently had my Wilderness /Half Dome Permit Application incorrectly cancelled and they were very quickly able to fix that issue. They were very nice and helpful. I was glad to be able to speak to a human person despite the move to recreation.gov. Happy Trails! |

Re: Yosemite permits on recreation.gov
开云体育Yeah seems like keeping the full trailheads report going would require manual updates from rec dot gov, and for what purpose if YNP isn’t running the permit reservations anymore?Still seems like the logistics of getting to Lyell trailhead will be interesting with the campground closed, which might actually make it easier to score a walk-up since presumably everyone will need a ride into TM the morning of (maybe there will be early morning traffic jams into TM?). 开云体育Hi Lange,Thank you for so much detail! I will ask the trail Yodas :) It is all so confusing…. I liked the trailhead quays chart - it was easy to operate and act accordingly. Karina Bezkrovnaia On Jan 10, 2022, at 16:24, Frank <frankdpct@...> wrote:

开云体育From the
Yosemite wilderness permits page? : Looks like
they plan to revert to the pre-covid method for walk ups. I would think
that they would remove the full trailheads report since that
information is available on recreation.gov. Frank

Hi Karina - that I don’t know. I’d assume the walk-ups will operate like last year? Looks like there are 6 for HI-LYV pass through and 12 for Lyell. Unclaimed or returned permits I’d assume will be the same - frequently check the available permits and if you see one pop up then apply directly for that date and hope you get it? TBH I’m not sure how or if the recreation dot com booking system will be linked to the Yosemite full trailheads report? --
