Yosemite Drive through

Last year, NPS issued a transit pass for people wanting to cross the Sierras on 120. It was a timed (4 hour), no stop pass.

I used this pass several times last year.

I think a copy of your permit was sufficient for leaving a car in a long term lot, but verify that.

Re: Yosemite drive through permits

Yes, that is how I read it (Yosemite wilderness permit) and that is why I got the day pass.

However, I am going to Yosemite this Saturday for overnight wilderness camping. I will ask the ranger?this specific question, if I don't call them beforehand and ask them.

Yes, if you are driving a vehicle into or through Yosemite National Park between 6 am and 4 pm (peak hours), you must have one of the following with matching photo ID:

Yes. You must have a peak-hours reservation to drive a vehicle into the park unless you arrive before 6 am or after 4 pm.

Re: Yosemite drive through permits

Hi Ken

Thanks.?

The day permit also has interesting wording. The permit is valid for 3 days from the day of the event , I don’t think there’s a need to enter that day.?

Yosemite drive through permits

Just realized that this year you need a day pass to even drive through.

I have a Inyo wilderness permit to hike from Rush Creek to Happy Isles. I have to enter Yosemite, leave a car at Happy Isles, drive through 120 and exit Tioga Pass and park another car at Silver lake and start the hike.

Is my Inyo wilderness permit sufficient to enter Yosemite to leave a car at Happy Isles?

Unfortunately, day permits are gone already for the day I am interested. If my Inyo wilderness permits don't work, then I have to leave a day early, enter the park after 4pm, leave my car and exit at night.

Any advise?

Yikes - just read the responder’s account of the situation - a lot more serious than I thought when I first heard the news. Hope he heals up well, sounds like it could have been a far worse outcome given the circumstances. Will be thinking good thoughts for him.

He will be off of social media for a few months and needs time to focus on his recovery. I’ve been in touch with his wife and she requests that people *not* try to contact John or her directly so they can focus on his recovery. She has shared a CaringBridge link so those who are interested can follow his progress. You may write comments and well wishes there. So since we are searching for the subject s/he is not available to give us the scent article. ?We usually send the handler (often ?a CARDA person) into the house with the family to get the best piece - scent article. ?Then as you say.

To add to that last email, The footprint is for the trackers. Trailing dog teams should also be able to use footprints as well. I use them to confirm my dog's work. I.e. if my dog is working in an area that has some good track traps (open dirt areas), I look at the ground to see if I can see any matching tracks or signs. Also, the flankers are to keep an eye out as well for signs.

SAR is a puzzle game where we constantly look for clues - How is the trailing dog working? Is there an article/item that belongs to the subject? etc.

OK, from a canine search and rescue perspective, which I was a trailing handler for 25 years, I did not talk about scent articles. Here is the scent article scoop. Only the subject should create the scent article.

  1. Use unscented zip-lock plastic bags, sandwich or quart freezer. 3 or more.
  2. Use unscented kleenex / tissue. Rub in arm pit, nape of neck, crotch (no feces). Idea is to get some good sweat/scent on the tissue. You can even throw in clothing pieces if you want - I have used underwear articles and socks. I even used car seats a few times.
  3. Place tissue in zip lock bag - 1 to 2 per.
  4. Place multiple zip locks into a larger zip lock, gallon size.
  5. Mark outside of large zip lock with subject's name.
  6. Place bag at floor of vehicle out of direct sun as much as possible.

You can further note on the bag, "Collected per CARDA handler guideline." I am CARDA 169. This later will tell SAR teams the quality of the scent article. Worst thing to do is put the scent article in a paper bag, which is porous and will collect other scents in the area. Placement on vehicle floor is good. As for temperature, it should be acceptable. I have actually had my dog work with a scent article that was in my car for a year before being used. It was kept in a zip lock bag the entire time.

Key is to avoid getting anyone else's scent on the scent article. Even the exterior of the bag can hold scent. I have worked with contaminated scent articles, but there are limitations and details that must be followed to ensure the scent article can be used with reliability.

I can discuss more if people want. I am currently working on a book on how to train trailing dogs. Scent article collection will be contained within.

Footprint is usually for the trackers. ?We use it to get a direction of travel-cuts the search area. ?Difficult to follow over long stretches. ?We use a scent article for the dogs - recently worn shirt or gloves for example ?

Very sorry to read about his accident. Always a positive force in the hiking community and I hope he recovers quickly. John is, so far, the only member of this community who I have met in person. We met very briefly by chance at the Muir Hut in August 2013 when I was on my first thru hike of the JMT. ?Get well soon, John!?
