Re: New Quadra-4 + USB dongle + WiFi

Thanks Danny! I'll have more out soon, I've just been waiting on a wsjtx update, so I can provide details on how to upgrade that (simple with the script w3djs wrote), followed by how to configure everything.

Merry Christmas

Re: cant find ardop executable

I had to build ardop for my Arm64 Pinebook Pro and Pinephone (same binary) from source. As I recall, prebuilt binaries didn't work for me on those machines.

I can provide the binary that I built upon request. I have not tried it on my new Quadra HamPi system yet, but plan to do so. Currently, the problem with ardopc is it doesn't work correctly with new-ish Linux kernels. More than one thread on the subject can be found in the ardop groups.io

Re: New Quadra-4 + USB dongle + WiFi

I've been a fairly heavy consumer of SD cards for Pine64 hardware for some time now. I used to have frequent trouble with SD cards until I adopted ALL of the Armbian recommendations:

Armbian can simply not run on unreliable hardware so checking your SD card with either or is mandatory if you run in problems.

Remember, Quadra and HamPi OS are (were built with) Armbian!

It does mean something was written incorrectly, but in such a large image, that write failure could be anywhere...in somewhere critical or non-critical.

Even if I somehow knew it was somewhere non-critical, I'd scrap it, because it could also be sign of a fake or poor quality and the faults may soon occur elsewhere where they ARE critical.

Balena Etcher does take forever but, mine does finally show verified and good. I just did this for the first time a few days ago and used the video by Ham Radio Dude on YouTube¡worked great!!

Merry Christmas All!

Re: New Quadra-4 + USB dongle + WiFi

When Balena Etcher reports that the flash has failed, what that means is that it makes a hash (fancy checksum) of the image it wrote and compares it to the hash of the source image, and if those two hashes (fancy checksums) don't match exactly, it reports the flash has failed. It does mean something was written incorrectly, but in such a large image, that write failure could be anywhere...in somewhere critical or non-critical.

I'd be wary of using an image that failed. Getting reliable media takes a load off my shoulders at least. But, YMMV.

Re: Confused RE: How to re-image the Quadra

What size card are you trying to flash HamPi on?? It requires a minimum of 15.6gb...I use a 32gb card. And for the recod, HamPi/Hamclock is incredible!!

Re: Confused RE: How to re-image the Quadra

I forgot to attach the log of the failed RealVNC install.

Re: Confused RE: How to re-image the Quadra

When I boot Ham-Pi from the sd card, it looks like I have two separate linux boxes available -- the one with Ham-Pi installed and the one with the standard Quadra software installed. Is that right?

I installed RealVNC on the Quadra machine, and that worked well. Then I booted off the Ham-Pi card and my VNC client couldn't find either the Quadra box or the Ham-Pi box. So I guessed that I needed to install RealVNC on the Ham-Pi box, but the install failed. (See attached file.) Can anybody clue me in on what's going on here or what mistake I'm making.

BTW, flashing the Ham-Pi image has been a problem for me. Win32DiskImager goes through the whole process, including a successful validation, in about ten minutes. But the cards don't seem to boot at all. Balena Etcher takes much longer (about 40 minutes including validation),? and then at the very end it says the flash failed . Nonetheless the cards work; i.e., Ham-Pi loads.

In all cases, I have been booting with the video monitor attached.

Re: HDMI Recommendations

I power my whole cooling-stack off of 12VDC and use 'Buck Converters' to supply the different shelves (My QDX Radio is 9V, my Quadra(s) are 5V) my lights and Fan are also 5V but on a separate circuit.

Re: HDMI Recommendations

I wonder what the buck regulator is to go from 12V to 5V --
alternatively, the boost regulator(s) to go from 5V to 12V.

My guess is that the Quadra needs 5V for USB and other communication
circuitry, and 3.3V and 2.5V for the microcontroller chip itself, and
supporting circuitry. Thus, there would be a 12V -- 5V buck converter
that is used if necessary, and a 3.3V converter that's always used,
and if necessary there's also a 2.5V converter. Not that there's
anything wrong with that, as long as all of them are digital (i.e.
switcher) converters.

If the 12V to 5V buck converter is an LM7805 or other linear
converter, then a whole lot of that 12V juice is going up in smoke,
lke 60% or even more, depending on the original supply voltage. And
the required power budget in current always goes up as the voltage
goes down.

Re: HDMI Recommendations

Anyone know a good 12v with a usb charge port at 2a? Could stick the thing to the back of a tv all powered by one.

I just ordered this one (Amazon):

Portable Monitor - Pisichen 11.6 Inch Small HDMI Monitor Full HD 1920X1080 IPS Screen, LED Mini Monitor for Laptop Computer Xbox Ones PS3 PS4 Raspberry Pi, Plug&Play, VESA

Re: HDMI Recommendations

I've been pretty happy with a 15" ViewSonic:??ViewSonic VA1655 15.6 Inch 1080p Portable IPS Monitor.? I've been able to drive it with several laptops and RPi's.? Has a combined USB-C power + video, or separate USB-C power and mini HDMI inputs.? Will run off a USB cell phone booster battery (run time dependent on battery size).? I have not tried powering it from one of the laptop or RPi USB ports.? Visibility in indirect sunlight (under a canopy) was acceptable, not sure it would work great in direct sunlight.? Have not tried with Quadra yet, but video part should work fine.

I decided the larger screen was worth the size, price difference wasn't that bad, either.? Hope this helps.? 73 de KS1G

HDMI Recommendations

Any recommendations for approx a 10" mobile HDMI display, either touchscreen or mouse/keyboard ?

Re: New Cooling Solution for Pi and Quadra?

Well, I could go 'QDX Naked' and with the awesome (low-noise-fan) that comes with this shelf-kit, get away with it!
However, this will undo all the cooling additions that I made inside the QDX box (leeching heat to the case with thermal tape and above with the heat sink/tape..
The other reason is that now I have finally tamed this little rig! I also want to pull it out of the 'cooling shelf' and use it standalone with a PC for POTA!

The shelf/fan kit was primarily for Raspberry Pi and has all the mounting hardware - in fact, it is an amazingly QUALITY kit!

The fan just blows me away - so quiet!
