Wanted: Schematic for S-38E 51
I am working on restoring an S-38E and would appreciate a clear reworked copy of its schematic diagram. I have found some scanned copies but none are clear enough to read all of the component values and wiring connections. Thank you all in advance. -- Glen Jenkins, WB4KTF, S-38E wb4ktf@...

S-38 CW knob? 19
The CW knob on the S-38 I just bought is missing. Is there anything special about that knob, or is it the same as the others? I see that the shaft has threads unlike the others. thanks, Fraser, W3UTD

Hello to the group, new member with a TW-2000 14
Hello to the group and thanks to the owner for allowing me to post. Today when visiting a Vintage wireless meeting, I picked up a battered Hallicrafters TW 2000 from the estate of a deceased member. I would like to ask a few questions if I may, mainly on cosmetic items? The radio is missing the front wrap cover, which obviously did not help it as the radio had taken a big knock on the front brass bezel just on the writing of 'Dynamic Tuner' and this smashed the glass into several pieces, the brass has been straightened the best I can, and plan to use a piece of acrylic sheet to replace the glass. The plastic section at the bottom of the radio that has the wording of Band selector Tuning Off On Vol, has what looks like aluminium foil on the front edge, is this meant to be what is covering it or is this a replacement for something else already damaged. Perhaps the picture below will help in this description. It is also missing the 'Skyrider antenna'. I am assuming that this is basically a copy of the internal ferrite antenna, but has a small trim cap rather than the 22pF and is fitted into a plastic tube with a few rubber suckers to stick on a window. I know it is not really needed, but if I get chance at some point I could always make up a replacement so if anyone can confirm if it is the same I would appreciate it. Power has not been applied to the radio by me yet, I plan to replace the Hunts tubular paper caps and check the main smoothing caps before any power is applied. Lastly, it has the Ballast Adaptor fitted to allow for 220 Volts AC and has already got a 240 Volt mains plug fitted so I assume the slightly higher voltages we have in the UK should not matter as it stands, I will build up a battery pack for it initially at 90 Volts and 9 Volts and when happy will remove the ballast and fit a 240 to 110 Volt isolation transformer, it should save on a bit of heat within the radio case. Cheers Adrian G8UGD

S-38B, variations 53
?While following Glen¡¯s S-38e topic which we hijacked for S-40¡¯s discussions, I came upon the S-38B manual on BAMA which shows and lists PL-2 plug in the AC line cord, and SO-1 on the back of the chassis The manual picture shows SO-1 on the chassis rear apron right side [rear view]. . I could not see these on other versions. Perhaps that was UL¡¯s first punch at safety? So I wonder if there are really there on the B? And is there nothing equivalent on C,D,E? or maybe the back cover carries the equivalent disconnect, but is not shown in the schematics?.. or what ? -- don va3drl

Hallicrafters SX-117 for Sale Nice cosmetic condition. All tubes test fine on my Sencore TC-142. Strong audio with no ripple but the only thing I could hear was the IF band (weakly). Price is $165.00 (OBO) plus shipping, insurance, and receipt confirmation from 48350 ¨C or local pick-up, of course. Cash, personal check or PayPal F/F please. OT Schematic for S-38E related comments
I recently read ¡°if anyone knows of any news item concerning someone electrocuted by an AC/DC radio perhaps they could post a link. I have never heard of this happening in real life. ..etc ¡° Although, the actual words written may be true [ I have no proof one way or the other], I would not want to trivialize such a situation, and perhaps lull someone into a bad situation. Some related reading material that is rather new, but.. https://incompliancemag.com/electric-shock-from-radios-a-review/ -- don va3drl

SX-115 Low sensitivity .5 kc Selectivity UPDATE 3
Good morning all , I've completed the replacement all the components in the selectivity RC Circuits, tested associated tubes, and confirmed all is working, except the .5 kc selectivity. No improvement. Next steps 1. Check 2.2 pF cap C85 2. Check 390 pF caps C83 & 84 3. Align 50 kc IF I did confirm the grounding of the RC circuit when in .5 kc position. The selectivity switch is working as expected. 73 Steve w8tow

SX-115 Low sensitivity .5 kc Selectivity 10
Hi all, Just got my "dream receiver"...SX-115! It is a beautiful receiver inside and out. After careful power up, no hum, and it works, mostly. The sole issue signal in the 0.5 kc bandwidth are about 60 dB lower than any other bandwidth. I carefully cleaned the selectivity switch, inspected the associated resistors, (I didn't desolter them and measure R yet) tho. I've replaced all the .01 uF caps in the selectivity circuit. Per the manual, in 0.5 kc bw, all resistors are shorted. That is happening. So, why would the receiver have an attenuated sig on 0.5 kc only? Any suggestions? Thanks and 73 Steve W8tow

winter projects 9
What winter projects do you have lined up. I have an SR-400 Cyclone. I got it from a fellow who, unsuccessfully, attempted to upgrade it to a Cyclone II. It looks like a complete strip and rebuild from the first 1650 IF amp through the second 1650 IF amp. Also have a nice looking SR-500, still looking for a good set of original 8236's it. And that is it...... I am now the proud owner of many empty shelves, where old boat anchors once sat. Need SX-122 Tuning Knobs 4
I am in need of both tuning knobs for my SX-122A (same knobs as for an SX-122). Existing knobs have been butchered by PO, and are not salvageable at all. Please let me know if you can turn loose of one or two in mechanically and cosmetically great condition. 73, Bill AI5RP / KJ5BNE/AE Arlington, Texas

I have a 4 digit serial number around 4500. It¡¯s got a black cabinet and has round Hallicrafters marked meters recessed in the front panel. Any wild guess on what year this transmitter was made? Thanks, Tom N5AMA

s 38C tube line up 8
Well, I did it again.... brought home a sad looking S-38C. It isnt in bad shape, all the knobs and parts are there. It doesnt play, however. I did bring it up on a variac, with a dim bulb . All I get is a slight hum out og the speaker... Guessing tome for new filter caps ( no biggie). In looking at various schematics, I am finding both 35z5, 50L6, 12sq7, 12sa7, 12sk7 , and 12sa7 12sk7 , 12sg7 35z5, 50L6 as tube line ups. Seeing as mine had a 6sk7 in it (my guess someone had low line voltage?), I am trying to figure out which line up is correct. Is there an easy way to do this , other than looking at tube socket wiring (and who knows if mine is correct)? Any ideas??? Howard

Snagged Me a 51C2A Clock Radio 3
Haven't done much Hallicrafters lately but I always try to keep an eye out for something that might interest me. I found this on GoodWill's auction site and I thought they wanted too much for it so the auction ran and no bids. It was relisted with the same price and after some mental arm twisting with myself I pulled the trigger on it. It arrived in good shape and was packed very well. After unwrapping all the bubble wrap I decided to live dangerously and plugged it in. I turned it on and no hum - big surprise - and the only thing that was irritating was scratchy noises when tuning. All that aside it tuned in my favorite station just fine and the clock (Telechron mvt) kept perfect time the couple days I left it plugged in. Once out to the shop and getting the dust blown out I cleaned the tuning capacitor shaft and the scratching went away. I will put it up on the shelf and re-cap it after a couple other projects get finished. Here's some pics... 73, -- Justin B. KI5GKD
