RE Don, I think you were onto something. Halden, you have gone to a lot of work for us¡ªthanks! It takes me a lot of time to digest all this! so I can¡¯t just bounce it back. I have inserted
Re: Very Nice 8R-40 Incoming!
Run 1 of the 8R-40 used the same tone control arrangement as run 2. I have an example of the first run and the main difference is that run 1 used a selenium rectifier in the power supply and a

Re: Very Nice 8R-40 Incoming!
One interesting difference between the S-40B and the 8R-40 is the use of the tone control to control tone, BFO, and AVC. These are all separately controlled in the S-40B. When the control is set to

Halden, I understand that you are not running this transformer at rated input voltage. Have you not considered that you do not have the design rated magnetic field being generated and therefore,

Hi Jim, No, I haven't crushed that resistor to inspect it nor measured its inductance. I have attached a screenshot that shows that there is very little phase difference between primary current and

HaldenYour current sensing resistor is 1 ohm?? How many turns of wire do you think make up this resistance?? Film resistors can also have a spiral cut to trim resistance but it's inductance is

This morning I looked further for voltage spikes while turning the transformer on and off using a pliers spanning the SSR terminals.? Spikes exceeding the usual peak voltage were quite rare.?

Hi Jim, I'm not suggesting which is better; just commenting on the advantages of each.? It seems that inrush current might be lower, on average, with a mechanical turn-off (speculation) and voltage

HaldenYour last two messages arrived with the same time stamp but they seem to contradict each other so I am confused on which do you now feel is better, SSR or mechanical contacts? Are you still

(second post on Aug 3 2024 Pacific Time) I looked for but did not observe HV secondary voltage changes correlated with the current surge related to transformer core remanence. So, I tried to generate

Don, I think you were onto something. I made a few changes to the setup since the previous session. I used to have just one of the low-voltage secondaries loaded. Now, the 6.3 V secondary is loaded
Re: Radiotron Designers Handbook, 4th Edition
Thanks for posting that link Jim! The copy I had was not scanned using an OCR and thus wasn't searchable. Also, with the chapters, you can click on the section you want and it goes there

Seems to be a "gussied up" S-40B.? This is labeled? Run 2 and was built Sep 17, 1953.? I've started r-capping it and will finish up when my cap stock is replenished next week.? My wife actually

You may want to look at "The Radiotron Designer's Handbook" 4th edition, chapter 16, section 7, p.694 ff. which has a fairly comprehensive survey of noise limiters as used in AM receivers. The Lamb

Re: Hallicrafters SX17 modifier noise limiter
I pulled down the user manual for the SX18 and had a look at the circuit. It looks to be much simplified to the SX17. Only one RF stage, no noise limiter. It uses a 6Q7 rather than 6R7 in the last
