For Sale… HA1 keyer

Dennis Ashworth, K7FL

I purchased a used HA1 keyer for a project I’m probably never going to complete. The keyer cosmetics are about a 7 with minor surface scratches on top. The front panel is clear. I have not tested it so can’t vouch for the functionality. I don’t see any obvious issues visually. The bottom feet are missing.

Jim
I did change the capacitors, and I did replace all the valves/tubes taken from my second radio which were in a working condition ( I don’t have access to a valve/tube tester). To be honest I haven’t had too much time to investigate any further, but at least I now know that the speaker values are reasonable, and I can continue with my investigation.
By unmolested condition, the set looks in a good original condition, unlike my original radio which had been converted to a solid state power supply, (now restored to original), some very questionable re wiring which I also repaired etc etc.
Thank you very much for the reply much appreciated.
Regards
Lynton?

Have you replaced all of the capacitors and checked all of the tubes with a decent tube tester?

To answer your question, the field coil resistance is reasonable along with the audio transformer primary and secondary resistances.? There is still the possibility that there are other issues with the inductor and transformer like shorted turns that the ohmmeter cannot detect.? HT-44 6DQ5 Screen Resistor

After testing every tube but the finals on a non-working HT-44 (everything lights, no bias current pulled), I found both 6DQ5's tested bad.? One had an HK short and the other a short elsewhere if I recall correctly.
?
It looks like a prior owner replaced R77 with two resistors in series totaling 2.15 KΩ rather than the spec'd 1.8 KΩ.? Also, C94 appears to be cracked.
?
So I'm wondering why that resistor mod might have been made?? I'm guessing he may not have had a 1.8KΩ and this is as close as he could get?? The resistors are not burned or cracked.
?
Any ideas?

Re: For Sale: Electric Radio Magazine Collection

Hi John and gang, True, it is a bargain and the best resource of old tube radio reviews and articles out there! I started my subscription around 1996, and was able to purchase the earlier issues starting with #1 in 1989 from an OT downsizing his station. Fast forward 28 years, I hear I am doing the same thing. I’m glad they went to a good home rather than the recycle bin! 73, Scott WA9WFA

Hi Don and gang, Yes , ER is the finest tube radio magazine in existence! ? If anyone here is not familiar with Electric Radio Magazine, I suggest you check out their website and subscribe! ?Since 1989 ER has had great articles on all the old tube transmitters, receivers, transceivers, both ham commercial and military. ?You name it, ?ER probably published an article on it. ?

I did sell the ER collection and it’s going to a good home.

Re: Hallicrafters S20

In the S-40 which has a similar audio output but a permanentf6
magnet speaker, the field coil is replaced with a 1500 ohm resistor.
There is no spec given for the S-20 transformer in the handbook I have
but its probably the same as used in the S-20R and S-40 series for the
6F6 tube. Check the tube data sheet but its likely about 4500 ohms
primary impedance to speaker voice coil. Not very critical. Same
transformer can be used for 6V6 and some other tubes. Mounted on the
speaker frame. If you replace the speaker with a PM one replace the
field coil with a 1500 ohm about 5 Watt resistor and if the transformer
seems to be OK try to remount it on the new speaker frame or on the
chassis someplace.
I should ask first what is wrong with the audio? Is the speaker
damaged?

Local pick-up Minneapolis/Saint Paul area preferred, I am happy to drive a modest distance to meet up part way, or I would ship at your expense using PirateShip. To give you an idea of shipping cost, I used PirateShip to estimate the shipping cost from Saint Paul Minnesota to a friend's house in Florida at $88 for two 40 pound, 16x16x16 boxes (UPS Ground). Email me for a better estimate to your zip code.
Asking $350 plus shipping.

?
Yeah, the furnace in the summer thing does seem like a tangent to be sure.?
?
But the point was of course illustrating that the same will happen to a switch, relay contacts and/or even two wires twisted together (using gloves , of course!) when the circuit is loaded either lightly or not..... because the "spark" happens in all cases sometimes on "make" and sometimes on "break" (sometimes both) .?
?
There may be a big spark and sometimes a small one and sometimes not at all.? But I don't think anyone is clever enough to time the make/break so as to make it happen when there's not going to be a spark.
?
You see it quite well with the two wires.? My point is to simply get it off the switch and over to a relay or different switch etc, thereby saving the original (UN-replaceable) switch.
?
With the transformer, I have no input (or output!)??
?
Most of these transformers have lasted longer than many of us have been alive (although I suspect many of you are like me.... maybe born in the early to late 50's.....so maybe as long as we have been alive)
?
Having said that, if there was a design flaw I.E. Corona "effect" [not the Mexican beer!!!] that "h" claimed they fixed in 1959 or so,? most of these transformers might certainly be exhibiting some other problem not as yet discovered! (Or the same problem and they simply didn't fix it with their original fix!)
?
I hope someone finds it.??? But, It might not be "discoverable" by forensic analysis.
?
I watch with great interest as Halden unwinds these wires!

Betreff: [HallicraftersRadios] SX-23 Restoration - Information Requested

?

I am about to start restoration of an SX-23. ?It works but not perfectly. ?It was apparently recapped early in the plastic capacitor era but needs some cosmetic and mechanical help. ?I am asking for help with the following questions.

?

Cabinet paint. ?Was the original cabinet paint smooth or wrinkle? ?I have seen pictures of both black and light gray cabinets where it looks like a very light wrinkle but could even simply have been paint with sand grains mixed in?

?

Front Panel. ?My front panel needs help, probably best an overlay. ?Does anyone know of someone who can make one and does anyone have a good image of an SX-23 front panel that I can provide to such a company if they don't already have? ?I think the word I am looking for regarding the image is orthogonal, that is the same scale in all directions. ?Maybe dry transfer lettering or decals would also be feasible - can anyone recommend sources?

?

S- meter mounting. ?My s-meter works which is very fortunate but it is not well attached to the front panel. ?Can anyone provide a description or a picture of the back of the front panel in the s-meter area that could show how it is attached to the front panel? ?There are no screws into the meter housing through the front panel. ?Maybe it was just held in by the tight springy sheet metal wrapper?

?

Bandspread dial indicator. ?The bandspread dial indicator mechanism is missing. ?The bandspread works and there is still some dial cord from the bandspread switch shaft that I can see was routed to the indicator mechanism. ?I found a blurry picture which shows the pulley for the bandspread indicator is about 2 inches diameter. ?Can any one provide the exact diameter? ?It looks like the pulley is on the back end of a short shaft and toward the front there would probably be a clear circular piece of plastic with a radial black line. ?There would also be a bracket for the dial light. ?I might be able to build such a mechanism but it would help to have a description and pictures. ?Of course if someone would be willing to sell one of these mechanisms I would be interested in purchasing!

?

On the under side, there is a shelf along each side of the chassis on which there were some components. ?Can anyone tell me or confirm what those components were originally? Looking at mine and at some pictures of the underside that I have seen, it looks like?

?

Power Transformer Side. ?On the power transformer side the shelf had a candohm resistor. ?These were used in many radios of that vintage and are a long flat metal can containing a wire wound tapped resistor. ?For example, on the SX-28 R31 and R32 are the two sections of a candohm resistor, used as a voltage divider for screen voltage. ?On the SX-23 the candohm serves the same purpose and comprises R30 and R31. ?On mine the candohm was replaced by two separate resistors. ?My only question on this side is whether there was anything else on this shelf originally?

?

I.F. Transformer Side. ?It looks like the only items on the shelf were R20 and C68 connected to the headphone jack, toward the front of the radio. ?There is an unused hole in that shelf toward the rear. ?Again here my only question is whether there was anything else on this shelf originally??

?

Any information will be much appreciated!
