Locked Tube Tester

I have an old B&K tube Dyna Quik tester Model 550. It tests all the
tubes that I normally use or need and has been reliable.

My question is this. The B&K tester I have is a "Dynamic Mutual
Conductance" tester and some of the (new) tubes I test, do not seem
to measure up using the RED/YELLOW/GREEN scales.

I have always gone by the "go/no go" method using the
RED/YELLOW/GREEN scales and never paid any attention to
the "Micromhos" scale. I recently referred to my old RCA Receiving
tube manual and noticed that each tube in the book has
a "Transconductance" value in micromhos.

I am now debating with myself if I should ignore the colors and
actually start to pay attention to the micromhos scale on the tester.

If this is so, could I use my old RCA receiving tube manual which
gives the Micromhos number for the tubes and compare this published
number with the one on the tube tester meter scale even if it is not
in the green? Is Transconductance the same as Mutual Conductance?
Thanks for any help with this.

All the HT-3# series transmitters use 6146 tubes as their finals or power amplifiers.? Theoretically, utilizing the same driver

tube and the same power amplifier tubes, they should all put out the same wattage.? However, this would be dependent on

lots of different factors.

?

1)?????? Driving power

2)?????? 6146 tube condition

3)?????? Line voltage

4)?????? DC voltages

5)?????? Component failures or values

6)?????? Alignment

7)?????? Transmit frequency

8)?????? Transmitter design

?

etc, etc.

?

Manufacturers like Collins, Drake, Kenwood, Hammarlund, Swan, all used the same basic tube lineup in their radios and they all

put out the same basic ~ 100 watts.? No one thing could be assigned to the differences in output power.? However, with a pair

of 6146 tubes as a final power amplifier with good driving power, ~ 100 watts should be obtainable - regardless of the rig.

I've only been involved with Hallicrafters equipment a year or so,
so I have a lot to learn. From what I have read, all the HT-3#
series transmitters (excluding linear amps) use the same finals and
drivers. My HT-30 is 30watts output and I have read the others range
from 85 to about 135 watts out. Why is there such a difference in
outputs, is it the power supplies or what?

Thanks to all for the leads. Bill all I really need is the metal insert for the large tuning knob. The rig is an HT-30, but I know the SX-100 uses the same size (1.367 inch) because that is my receiver. I think the HT-3# series of transmitters all use the same size as well. I would buy the whole knob if I need to, however.

Locked Hallicrafters hand microphone FS

Ken Simpson, W8EK

For Sale:

Hallicrafters hand microphone

I don't know the model number, but it has the Hallicrafters
"h" logo on it. It is fairly small, and gray in color. It has
velcro riveted to the back, and a 4 pin plug on the end of
the coiled cord. It may have come from an SR-42, but I
am not certain of that. It is in nice shape.

$35 plus shipping from Florida.

Thanks.

Anyone out there have an SX-111. I have one and have been using it on

I installed the preamp because the receiver seems so deaf from 20
meters and up. 80 and 40 are fine. I did a complete tune up
including front end and both IF's. I checked the tubes and all seem
OK. Is it possible the front end of this receiver is very good on 80
and 40 and stinks on the higher bands?

K2WH
Hi Bill,
I've had a SX-111 for 3 or 4 years which I use mostly on 40 meters. It has always
seemed quite sensitive when I compare it to my other Hallicrafters receivers (SX-28,
SX-42, SX-62, SX-71, and SX-100). My antenna is a 40 m dipole up quite high (75
feet) so that might be the reason for good reception. I'm tempted to try the preamp
though. By the way, I enjoy the SX-28 right behind the SX-111 for listening.

Yes. Click on "Files" on the left hand side of the screen. In the
files section, you will find (2)MSword files with the information you
need.

As to the SX-42 labels, I do not have labels (yet) for the SX-42.
Apparently they are rare.

A lot of them are complete and ready to print but due to shooting

Thank you for the new discussion group and the labels offer. Actually,
I'd appreciate the two SX-42A labels. I've finished the recapping of my
