Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Also, been looking at the LCD conversion since the CRT has burn-in, but it is bright and works otherwise. Alas, one step at a time, and needing to be careful with funds at the moment. Spent enough on

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
I didn't see a HEDS or GEDS number or any numbers on it at all, I'm just replacing the Emitters in it for now and see what happens, really i can use any 2-bit quadrature encoder, doesn't have to be

Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Nathan it¡¯s great to see you¡¯re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I must ask if there¡¯s an HP p/n on that encoder? Should be a HEDS #### number on it. I didn¡¯t look when I had my unit
Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
The encoder from a 8922 may be the same. It appears to be based on the 8920. Glenn

Conversely, when these HP units were designed,? rotary encoders were not as widely available as standard products.

Nathan, If your rotary encoder repair to the sub-component level fails, or you just want to get something working temporarily to get on with further troubleshooting, there are dozen of these rotary

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Oh the carnage, but seriously, it's actually a simple device on the inside, surprising. Two upper Emitters and Receivers for the out of phase pulses to tell the machine which direction, which is fed

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
I'd be interested in a spare in case I fail, but, I did manage to desolder it from the button panel, and disassemble it. Found the IR LEDs are burnt out (reading open), the receivers still work

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Hi Nathan, Is it the push function to enter the command, or is it the encoder part that makes the coded instruction? I would think the enter could be rigged up mechanically to push almost any sort of

Hi Nathan, ?? I can send you one of those encoders for $40. It will be a used pull out from another unit. Rick

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Well, great news and a little bad news. The unit boots and passes all self tests. Bad news is the knob is broken, it'll click to select but I think the encoders are toast in it, since if I manually

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Short update, after replacing the CPU and a couple other logic chips the unit boots up to bootloader and of course the corrupted ROM cause I did find on flash chips not passing power to the next one

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
So far the caps are reading okay, idk if it's my tester or not but all rear .5ohm. Honestly I'm not too familiar with the properties of tantalum caps. I'm still trying to figure out the Q1-Q4 and CR1

So far the tants seem okay, no shorted ones (or close thereto), some I removed and tested with a capacitor tester. I think I found what I needed for Q1-Q4 and CR1 so hopefully that fixes some things.

Re: Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error #hp8920b
Hi Nathan, Don't forget the capacitors. They have a shorter MTBF than chips. These sets are getting old, and even tantalums are failing. Best regards Bill M.
