hp8921a power supply 20
hi guys my hp8921a power supply has failed and i have installed smps power supplies to power it. these are working ok however i have no reception or spectrum anyalser. the original power supply must put out a signal to the micro that shows it to be working because a error of i think it was power supply fault which the detection line comes from the secondary ac before the diode. any assistance would be great. all rails are included 43volt +12 and +5 and +14.4 and -14.3. it powers up diags screen all good but i am wondering the batt monitor and because no signal on it the system has turned the machine off. an error does show smps included 12volt rail 12V 3A 36W 5 volt rail 5V 6A 30W 43 volt rail 24V 1A 25W ? Quantity 2 + and - 14volt rails 15V 2A 30W ? Quantity 2

HP8920B Blowing Fuses 8
Friends, My beloved HP8920B RF Communications Test Set started blowing the 5A AC fuse today. It blows as soon as you push the power switch. I am wondering if there is a common problem I could look for. Tomorrow I may try to see if it will run on 12VDC. It has a connector and switch for DC operation. Any advice appreciated. Thanks! Jeff

All the help screens for the HB8920B
Does anyone have a print out of all the help screens on the test set? Or are they available in a manual somewhere? I'm new to the set and trying to learn all I can. I found how to get into the test screen but would like a print out of each section on the help menu. Thanks for your help Steve

Trying to reach a menber of the group (Dave, ktx85)
This is a sort of last ditch effort to reach Dave with whom I did have momentary email contact regarding his recent post (in late February). It was posted by mistake not suprisingly. So Dave, please reply to any of my emails if you see this post.

Squelch Fixed High Level, SOHL 12
Regarding HP 8920A problems where the diagnostics report "Squelch Fixed High Level and Squelch Open High Level" fail, this was because of a failure of Q512 in the receiver module. This failure mainly occurred with earlier receiver module numbers 08920-61028, not the newer receiver - 08920-61102. Q512 is a BFT-93 leadless transistor. With this failure, you usually see a 10 - 15 dB drop in receiver sensitivity. Good luck! rick

WTB: "Digital cover" PN 08920-00176 for HP 8920B
This is the sheet metal top cover that restrains the digital boards. Needed for an instrument I have been saving as a retirement project. And the day is upon me. If anyone has this part from a scrapped 8920B (also, 8920A at or after SN prefix 3452, or 8921A at or after SN prefix 3501), I'd be interested. Thank you for your time. Don Hillsboro OR

FS: HP 8920A Service Monitor 4
Mates, I have available an HP8920A. Unit appears to be in great shape, but of course, is not new. Has options 001, 004, 013, 020, 102, 103. Or at least, that's whats listed on the tag. There is a screen shot of the option list below. I can't tell you the last time it was calibrated. I followed Amtronix's instructions to check the units operation, and everything passed. There is some burn in, but the screen appears to be bright and readable. I did some minor testing with my recently calibrated Mot. 2670, and all measurements were extremely close. I have replaced the bumpers with high quality 3D printed parts. Please note, I don't have the covers for the handle hinges, and I believe the springs are not present, so one must pull out the hinges in order to lock the handle. Looking for $1500.00 obo. I can ship at your expense. I am located in Los Angeles, California. I would prefer to to sell in person, but am willing to ship at your expense (though I will cover insurance.) Here are some pics:

8935 Restarts Randomly 6
Evening everyone. I have 2 of these units that exhibit the same behavior. They randomly restart for no reason occasionally. I have not been able to establish a pattern regarding the issue. All self tests pass and they both work great besides the restart issue. Anyone have any input on what might be causing this? Thanks, Jason Smith

8920B Receiver Synth "Out of Lock" 16
Hi group! New member here. I have an 8920B here that I repaired some time ago (power supply failure) and considered it working. But the other day used it to test a transmitter and no Tx frequency! Found the Receiver Synth has no PLL lock. (hopefully that's the only issue) I have repaired a few ESA Series SAs with this error and in all cases, it was a failed divider. I see from the 8920 schematic that it uses a similar scheme as the ESA series. (VCO to dividers to Frac-N divider) Looks like a bear to troubleshoot w/o extender cards. Has anyone seen this before? (divider failure) Thanks! Mark

My last 3 Problems on my HP 8920A repair 5
Good day to all. I am a newcomer to the site and need some help on these last 3 problems. I have ready many threads and I have done searches but came up empty. I will preface this with a comment. Rick at Amtronix sent me a new set of Audio cards, and a new Reference module at a very good price. At that time I was having a terrible time with my email from my domain. It was so bad that I think Rick may have not even received half of what I sent. So Rick, I know you are on this FORUM , no harm no foul. I know you probably tried to reach me Rick, but it was bad for 2 months back in the summer. I basically just gave up trying to reach you. I have done a complete rebuild on the PSU. All voltages are perfect and clean. I upgraded the Standard Reference module Rick sold me to the High Stability one and calibrated that. All good. I have also replaced the Input Assembly A23 with a known good unit. All other tests pass with the exception of the following. On to the problems. #1. AA2 assembly fails. My original module would not pass the diagnostic. Tests 9 thru 14 fail on BOTH my card and the one Rick sent. So, is this a card problem or should I be looking elsewhere? Hard to believe that 2 cards are bad but I guess that could be. Can this card be repaired and if so what am I looking at here? #2. My SINAD meter is PEGGED on Power on. I have no idea why or where to look? Is this the AA2 or do I now have a problem with the Receiver module? #3. Output assembly low failure. Not sure why or where to look for this. I did take the Attenuator out and apart and it tested just fine. 50.4 ohms input and 50.4 ohms output to the Input assembly module. No smoked or damaged parts inside it. There is NO mention of an Output assembly in the manual that I can find. I suspect that is just the A24 module. I am in Canada and I do have a source of parts now for my instrument. I have a second one on the way that needs some help and I purchased it. Thank you all for any help in advance. Ronnie VE3NLS

FS HP8935 and 8922M 4
Since the Ft Wayne Indiana Hamfest is coming up, Nov 16.... I have two units that I am taking offers on. Both have been tested on my bench and I have not found any problems at all. The 8935 has a beat up case but the front panel is in excellent shape. It has a front panel cover. The 8922 has only a 25 Watt input and does have the spectrum analyzer. All connectors on both units are in good shape. If you would like to pick up one of these units at Ft Wayne, Make an offer. I am in Indianapolis. Wally KC9INK

8935/E6380A
Hi All, I have what I think is a fairly late model h/w & s/w unit, see screen shot. Would love to share latest firmware, but getting it out of onboard flash into PCMCIA card might be tricky if at all. Looking for guidance? The unit had 3 dead batteries, 2 on PCB and the pair of AA at the rear with free leaked battery alkaline substance. The unit is very healthy and close enough to calibration even though all backup batteries were flat….. This has been asked, has anyone obtained the calibration s/w card? Regards Gerald VK3GM

Features and options in an HP 8920A 20
I am helping the family of a deceased friend sell his equipment. One item is an HP 8920A. I know that it was being used regularly, and it powers-up with no complaints. My goal is to understand the installed options so that I can ask for the best possible price. When powered-up, it indicates "V. A.10.11". Is this the hardware version or the software version? If software, should I try to upgrade to a later version before offering the unit for sale? The option and serial number tags on the back of the unit are as follows: 001 002 003 004 005 013 3235A02033 What does the serial number indicate? The self-generated option list produces the items below. My understanding of each is listed in parentheses. Did I understand them correctly? OPTIONAL RAM (256K RAM? What is the extra RAM used for?) SIGNALING (Tone/Digital – CDCSS, DTMF, 1-TONE and many others) I/O OPTION (DC Current Sensing, I/O: GPIB/RS-232) SPECTRUM ANALYZER (with tracking generator and ACP) HIGH STABILITY REF (OCXO high stability time base) C MESSAGE (weighted filter) Any help is appreciated. FOR SALE: HP8924C CRT Module 2
I have a 8924C CRT module available for a nominal amount plus shipping. It has light burns but this doesn't really affect the operation. A few years ago, I changed it out for a new module but when in operation I didn't notice a lot of difference. I could probably could have left it alone. Drop me a note if you can use it. KE6CD
