To any still interested. The resolution to the missing RMT menu item in menu 59 was to do yet another total reset.? 73? Thanks for the additional info. You're right, another reset may restore the RMT option (along with others that might be missing). ?Be sure you and the rig are at the same potential -- touch something metal before doing the reset. Re: CAT cable recommendations
I can confirm that the RT systems Yaesu-specific cable will work, and is likely the best option.
A warning: generic cables, and cables for other radios, such as Kenwoods, with the mini-DIN connector may connect the 13.8V pin to ground, blowing the SMD fuse on the board and making it impossible to power a tuner or other accessory. ?I experienced this on both my 897 and 857. ?You can (sort of) get away with it on an 817/818 because they use a current limiting resistor instead of a fuse, but it's best to use a Yaesu-specific cable. I’d like to use my non-D 857 with HRD in the field. I’ve found several cables online, but it’s hard to judge actual quality from a web listing.

开云体育Not to belabor the subject, but mine is mounted on an air-conditioner louver via a ProClip. ?It stays as cool as I do. ?Whether this has prevented display issues, I don't know. 73, Kent K9ZTV On Aug 13, 2022, at 8:42 AM, Hank Lambert (KB4MTO) <hank@...> wrote:

开云体育I live in Central Florida. I had my head unit mounted low on the front console on my Honda Element. It was always out of direct sunlight. I even had a soft cloth covering it when I wasn’t using it. After around 5 years of sitting in the car with internal summer temperatures easily hitting 130 degrees, my remote head developed zebra stripes. The problem seems to be heat, not direct sunlight. If I had it on top of the dash, it probably would have failed earlier. ? 73, ? --Hank KB4MTO / TA5ZC ? ? ? From:

Re: Keeping the 857D Screen For Long Life
开云体育From the sound of things, that could be as simple as a solder joint refusing to pass electrons until heat expands it.I've brought radios back to life, cured hums, and surprised myself on several repair projects merely by reflowing solder (assuming no overt damage, lightning events, operator errors, falls to the concrete, etc.). I'd look particularly at the battery area where you did the replacement. This is when being a ham becomes fun -- when you get to fix something!? Far more satisfying than mere operating. Good luck! 73, Kent K9ZTV On 8/12/2022 4:10 PM, PHILIP SHULLO

Re: Keeping the 857D Screen For Long Life
Interesting problem that is not limited to 857D. My 857D was purchased new in about 2005 and kept in my truck in South Florida. The zebra phenomena did occur the first time a couple of years later and I sent the transceiver to Yaesu for repair. It worked for a year or so and the problem reappeared. I sent it back to Yaesu and this time a different version of the display (though it looks the same) was installed. It has worked fine since then.? What I find interesting, however, is that I have a similar zebra issue with my VX-6 until it warms up. The handheld takes a few minutes of operation before the characters on the display become fully readable. The only time all the characters are fully present at "power on" is if the radio has been in the hot car or in direct sunlight for sometime. The problem first appeared when I bought a replacement battery as a back up for service events. It doesn't matter whether I use the original battery or the replacement, the radio needs to warm up before it becomes fully readable. It is annoying but something that I can live with. 73 Phil KI4LJP |
Re: Keeping the 857D Screen For Long Life
开云体育I just powered mine up to do an informal test. On first power, 17 of the pixel columns were blanked out. Over a period of about two hours, ten of them self "repaired" or "healed". This was with rig indoors at normal room temp. No transmitting, just power on, sitting idle.? I'm going to keep it on for the remainder of the day to see if any more columns come back alive. Is this an anomaly or is this what's seen on most with the zebra problem? Just curious... 开云体育This issue has been discussed over and over for the past few years. IMHO it seems that you are more likely to have the Zebra stripe issue if your radio was mounted in your car under hot sun conditions. Like any “rule” there are exceptions. If I were going to use my 857 in my car I would take it out when not in use based on the volume of anecdotally reported trouble issues.. I had my early 857D in and out the car for 3 years in the dry and very cold climate of Edmonton Alberta and in the humidity/rain of Victoria, British Columbia. No issue with the display at all, so I don't know what some folks are doing to help their displays go wonky. I've been lucky it seems.
