Interesting problem that is not limited to 857D. My 857D was purchased new in about 2005 and kept in my truck in South Florida. The zebra phenomena did occur the first time a couple of years later and I sent the transceiver to Yaesu for repair. It worked for a year or so and the problem reappeared. I sent it back to Yaesu and this time a different version of the display (though it looks the same) was installed. It has worked fine since then.?
What I find interesting, however, is that I have a similar zebra issue with my VX-6 until it warms up. The handheld takes a few minutes of operation before the characters on the display become fully readable. The only time all the characters are fully present at "power on" is if the radio has been in the hot car or in direct sunlight for sometime. The problem first appeared when I bought a replacement battery as a back up for service events. It doesn't matter whether I use the original battery or the replacement, the radio needs to warm up before it becomes fully readable. It is annoying but something that I can live with.
