I went to my favorite hilltop in EN50rl for CQWW VHF, managed to get the 6 and 2 meter Yagi antennas set up in the hot sun (the 6 meter Yagi is BIG), hooked everything up and it seemed to be doing fine. Antennas were working and SWR was good. I called several people over about a half an hour on 6 meters with my FT857D. None of them seemed to hear me. I was only running 10 watts as a QRP Portable Hilltopper. Then I saw smoke come out of the rig and then no power came out. It still received OK. I checked both 50 and 144 MHz and had no power output on either band. So I took everything down and went home (a 45 minute drive).

The rig did quite well up till now. I used it in the June VHF contest. I don't feel like digging into it right now to see what went bad. I'm sure I can repair it if I can get the parts.

I only had today from about 1 to 6 pm CDT to participate. I can't be on tomorrow. But I'm sad that I didn't make even one QSO.

Re: CQWW VHF

The FT-857D is not that difficult to work on, but there are limited people who offer the service.
There is one shop that does here is a link to his Facebook page.

I have worked on them several times myself, but I don't do it as a business, more entertainment working on radios for local hams.
Most of the parts are available and Yaesu parts are fairly reasonable.
I assume the receiver works OK and that would mean that most of the transmit chain is probably working as well.
Magic smoke leaking out is a sign that the problem could be visually traced to get near the fault and also indicates a higher power area or perhaps enough heat to char the circuit board.
Good luck with the radio.

Probably not.? That board is all Surface Mount Technology and repairing the board would require a LOT of specialized equipment, assuming someone can determine what the actual problem is with the board.

I see the external cat display 12864 for the FT-857 listed on eBay from China.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has used one...are they worthwhile?

We have gone over this a few times and the jumpers match what Tigertronics shows for this radio as well as his 891 which has the same issue.

I am helping someone setup their Signal Link for use with digital modes and when the Signal Link is plugged into the data port they get no RX audio out of the radio? I haven't used the Signal Link with mine in a few years as I am running Pactor so I couldn't remember what I had setup.

VARA & Digirig

Trying to run VARA through my digirig, using Port 6 for CAT and PTT, and when I hit open session it keys up the right and won't stop. Says "No connection..." but stays xmiting. I power down the right to stop it.
BTW, WSJT-X works FB on the same setup.

Re: FT857 pc programming issue

Quite some time ago, a US ham had bargain priced FT-857's for sale, they were several hundred dollars cheaper than any of the discount stores had them priced at.

What the bargain hunters didn't realize till too late was that they had just purchased the FT-857 designated for sale to Japanese Novice hams, so the rig had restricted frequency range and only 10watts o/p.

Word got around very, very quickly.

Re: FT857 pc programming issue

One thing I remember about Chirp is that, when the window to choose the radio comes up, there are a couple choices for the FT857. The first one I picked didn't work, so I tried the other one and it worked.

I had a similar issue in my 857, replaced it with a PICA fuse as there was nowhere to get an SMD fuse.
