Re: Baud Rate For APRS #aprs

I think he is talking about the baud rate from the computer to the TT4, not the over the air rate, which is pretty much always 1200 on 2m and may be 1200 or 9600 on 70cm.

It would seem reasonable that 1200 is a very good starting point.
Good luck.

I am running APRSIS32 on a Windows 11 PC with a TinyTrak4 TNC connected to my Yeasu FT857d radio.? The TT4 I know is properly configured - I used it years ago.? The software needs to know the port and gives me a choice of 3 or 4, and a baud rate.? Where do I find the baud rate to use?? And how do I know which port to use?? Re: Baud Rate For APRS #aprs

You will need to go into Device Manager on your PC to determine what COM port you are connected to. If it is not clear while looking at it, disconnect the USB cable and see which one goes away. Plug the USB back in and see which one shows up. That will give you the COM port for the software. The default baud for the TT4 is 19200, so unless you changed it for some reason, that should work.

To gain positions to use in the above I sometimes have to resort to finding
them on a map. I use Open Street Map via the interface at

The Layers icon, top right, gives some cool representations, a remote
sensing view ("satellite view") in ESRI Ariel, and I like the TF Outdoors
for a combination of map items in a topographic layout.

"Tone": If required.

Reviewing it, the manual is a bit of a bear on the topic.

I'd get set so it (likely TEN, Tone Encode) works in VFO, and works with the
repeater or other use, then _write_ that to Memory so it's not lost.

One may make changes to settings while _in_ Memory mode. These will go away
if one moves up a memory, or down, and then returns. Good for temporarily
clearing or trying something, however not for future use.

Hullo Jon,

Re a power metre.

I sometimes have had mildly erroneous power readings with the internal sensor. Mostly when I've had: an antenna issue (50 MHz, hanging on the apt. balcony railing), RF get back in to the power cable (a temporary, portable, by the window configuration), the counterpoise for a temporary antenna has failed, etc.

One may certainly pop a power meter inline with radio and feedline, at the radio.

As well one may get super curious and place it _at_ the antenna feedpoint, though that takes some dedication. I'd suggest one thing at a time.

Check it? Why not. You've asked the question of the situation.

So, three potentially useful things to check:
actual or otherwise measured power output;
path;
effective CTCSS settings (and the correct rptr input tone.)

Re: Power Output Question #fm #signal

Barclay Thomas

Jon,
Are you talking about the W8TVC/145.27 Traverse City repeater? Or any of the others? If so, you are on the fringes of the coverage area.
Take a look at the coverage maps from <https://kf8kk.com/wi0ok/repeaters.htm> to see.
Also you can go to <http://www.artscipub.com/repeaters/local/index.asp?state=michigan&city=BEULAH> and do a distance search but you need to join the group to look farther than 10 miles.
Do a search on "ham repeaters" near your area, or just the city you want to hit. Then get a coverage map and see whether you sit in the "Zone".

You also have a rise to about 1000 feet between you and Traverse City. Do a linear "walk" on Google Earth to see. You probably need either: a teller mast (hard to do, it's my problem too), or, easier, a 2M Yagi for directions gain. Your omni isn't going to put the signal/power where you need it to go.

Yes, take the 857 mobile (or even just portable) to a point maybe 1/4 of the distance closer to the intended repeater. Just a mag-mount antenna will be enough. If you can hit it cleanly, look at your antenna system. More RF power probably will not help in any consistent way.

Mac/WT4BT

Re: Power Output Question #fm #signal

Jon, any way you could take the radio mobile and get a bit closer then check the connection? If it works, the radio is working correctly and is setup right. If not, check what the others said. Make sure the tone is enabled and is correct. If it does work when closer, there may be something blocking the signal. Bio-towers (trees), buildings, hills, or maybe a 60foot Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. Look outside your window and see if there is a tall fluffy sailor walking around town.?
Good luck.?

You have seemed to look in all the right areas. ?If you were sitting within 5 miles of the repeater, I’d say you were over driving it at 50 watts. I guess you checked your transmitting tone frequency with a counter,.

At the base station ??Is the receiving tone off a bit?

Far-fetched? call a friend ?have him key the repeater with an tone no voice, then key your radio with audio, ?have a third friend listen to see if you are on the air. ?If he hears you it’s you radio ‘s tone.
