Thanks Ronald,? That's why I was trying to be as detailed as
possible.
I noted in the manual the reported effect on the S meter when
turning down the gain, so I probably should have reported that
turning the gain adjustment knob had no effect on the S meter on
my radio (or anything else for that matter).? Another clue that
something is functionally wrong.
I'll investigate the remote control option.

Gain is turned down. ?RF
gain shares the squelch knob.?
You also might try downloading the ARCP 480 remote
control program and get yourself (or borrow) a USB-RS232 cable
(RT Systems version always works¡Cheaper versions found on
Amazon or Ebay might not.)

Also, the MTune
means that it is in memory mode and tuning from a memory
channel.
