Another buttons issue, and no audio

Hi All,

- I've read through all the buttons related questions I can find. My issue doesn't quite match any of them
- No, it's not locked
- Yes, I have cleaned the control head contacts
- Yes, I have swapped the control head cable

Now that those are out of the way, I have an 857 I just got that supposedly, HF worked and VHF/UHF worked but had low TX power. It's been sitting in a closet for a while.

I'm not sure if it's an 857 or an 857D and I'm not clear on how to tell the difference.

I've powered it up, and I find that most of the buttons don't work and other than the power up sound and a beep if I use power or the mic FST button, there's no sound.? Short press on power or press of mic FST both get the running man and fast tune (and the associated beep).? The knob works.? The radio powers up in 40m and I can scroll up and down the band.? I'd expect to get at least some static sound.

That's all I can do.? No amount of button fondling causes anything else to happen.

I've seen the discussion about resistor issues on the board near the mic connector.? I don't see any damage on visual inspection in that area.? I've also tried both with and without the mic connected (an MH-31).? No change.

I've also tried the power it down, press power to drain caps, short power wires together to fully discharge, etc.? No change.

* I have attempted factory reset with home pressed on power up. The radio does not reset.? I've watched a YT video showing the process and the additional sound that is heard on a reset does not occur.

On a related note, my display looks a little different in content than the video I watched ().? Mine shows power supply voltage, the s-meter at left is showing full scale S9++ and shows MTUNE, in case any of that is relevant.

Nothing else is connected to the radio beyond power and the mic.

Ideas?

Thanks!
Steve, KF8KI

If the circuit board has a DIP socket on the top of the board, lower left as seen from the front, it is an 857. If it has a chip on the socket it's been upgraded to an 857D. If it has no socket, it was an 857D from the factory.

Thanks Juan,

I don't see an actual DIP (as in an IC) socket.? I do see that the module along the left chassis wall is plugged in to the main board though.? Guessing this is an 857D from the factory then?

Yours looks to be an 857D like mine. Emailing customer support will get you full confirmation. Yaesu still supports these.?

A couple clues you mentioned¡

?

S meter at S9+++ might indicate that the RF Gain is turned down. ?RF gain shares the squelch knob.? You also might try downloading the ARCP 480 remote control program and get yourself (or borrow) a USB-RS232 cable (RT Systems version always works¡Cheaper versions found on Amazon or Ebay might not.)

?

Also, the MTune means that it is in memory mode and tuning from a memory channel.

Thanks Ronald,? That's why I was trying to be as detailed as possible.

I noted in the manual the reported effect on the S meter when turning down the gain, so I probably should have reported that turning the gain adjustment knob had no effect on the S meter on my radio (or anything else for that matter).? Another clue that something is functionally wrong.

I'll investigate the remote control option.

Isn't?ARCP 480 for kenwood only?

you could also try FLRig, also needs a serial adapter.?
