for sale
For sale... Thunderbolt Amplifier and Pacemaker Transmitter.? Both are in excellent condition.? The Thunderbolt looks like it has never been used. They are just too heavy for me to deal with.? Shipping would be very expensive, so pick up preferred.? Thunderbolt would probably need crating to ship.? Located in Redondo Beach, California.? $900 for both. ![]()

Re: Information wanted on a panel meter, Johnson part # 22.2338..
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt¡¯s possible that it came from something other than a piece of ham radio gear. ?Back in the day, Johnson was building lots of electronics gear. ?marine radios, 2-way stuff. ?I think they even made some broadcast equipment, So it may have come from just about anywhere! On Nov 9, 2024, at 17:25, Ashley Hall via groups.io <Ashley40@...> wrote:

Re: Information wanted on a panel meter, Johnson part # 22.2338..
Mike Hello ?? Oh Thank You !! Any help in identifying the part is totally appreciated !! ? I havn't heard from you ( I sent a couple of emails) and was wondering if you are ok !! Feel free to send the VFO along anytime you are thinking about it... ?? This meter might be a one-off:? it showed up on ebay and I was wondering if its a one of a kind or something we might be able to use... The seller claimed its a 5 ma movement, has a Johnson logo face, markings and case. I think it might be a Ranger II movement but I wanted to be sure ...? so I got curious... ??? Nice and quiet here in Western Oregon,? fall is dripping in and the sun has mostly taken the winter off... Suits me just fine. I'm doing well, Ebay is slow but steady... I'm spending more time working with Radio Daze for graphics used on the Rangers and helping them get Johnson meter face reproductions posted on their site... Sure, its commercial but I believe in paying things forward and if the graphics they post might help someone who is restoring a Johnson transmitter, then I'm ok and happy ... ?? I'm glad you have a "winter project"...I was wondering how the Valiant was coming along Ashley ???? ?? Hi Ashley, ?

Re: Tons of noise on the floor of an Invader 2000 in SSB
An old post, but will comment anyway.? I was never able to find an Invader to buy, but did buy some Hallicrafters stuff (HT-44) from the same period and had lots of 60 Hz hum on the transmit audio.? In my case, most of the hum was due to the fact that they chose to bundle wires carrying the line voltage to a front panel switch with everything else including shielded audio lines going to/from the front panel mic gain control.? I ran new wires outside the bundle for the line voltage and installed new shielded cable, also outside the bundle.? Almost all the hum disappeared.??
?
While restoring an RME-6900 receiver recently, the first thing I noticed was that there was ZERO background hum.? The RME engineers had followed the advice in the RCA tube manual to a Tee.? Instead of using the chassis ground as the return for the filaments, they ran twisted pair to every tube socket with no ground involved.? In addition, and here's one I've never seen before but is in the RCA tube manual, they applied +80 VDC to the filament string.? According to the manual, this is an effective way to reduce filament hum in receiving tubes.? No reason that wouldn't work I guess with the audio string tubes in a transmitter.??

Rubber seal around VFO escutcheon - the source
I've been working on restoring an old Johnson Ranger transmitter and like most of the Johnson transmitters from that era, the rubber strip between the VFO dial escutcheon and the front panel had deteriorated, cracking a lot in the round corners where's it's a bit stretched.? While researching something else, I stumbled across a decades old forum post that said you could get a suitable replacement from WalMart.? After trying a lot of different search words, I found the stuff on the WalMart site.? It's not just a suitable replacement, it looks to me like it's the exact same stuff.? Viking Val 2 - PTT really shorting out
I was troubleshooting a grid drive problem on my Valiant ?2 and then heard a pop and she died. One of the plug fuses blew. Now if I turn on the HV the PTT shorts out and it¡¯s game over.?
I get AC on the HV rectifiers.? T1 and T2 are within tolerance for ohm values and L43 and L44 also.? low voltage is not affected that I can tell so far.? before I get the PTT relay mod from Terry at DLabs and replace it I would like to know of the PTT relay is actually shorted. ? how can I test it. ?? |

Any comments? After having a rough time of aligning the long case retention screws, I'm not ready yet to pull mine apart again until I know I have time to work on it and I have my workbench area cleared out. I don't remember if the group allows attachments of pictures, but could you post a picture of under the chassis where it's crowded and circle or point an arrow to the hole the transformer screw needs to go through? If you can't post it here, maybe on a site you can link to (some free picture hosting site)? I'm wondering if you can't get a small 1/4" drive socket with extension in there to hold a nut in place while you run the screw through the transformer. You probably only need to get it started then hold it from the side with a wide flat blade screwdriver while you tighten from above. At some point, it should hold itself in place if it doesn't slip around. There's also Loctite, the type that holds threads together but you don't need heat to take the joint apart. I think it's the blue Loctite. Maybe you can't get in there easily. We have a member who works on these who should be able to verify that it is possible or not and may have a tip on how to get that screw in place. Ranger transformer mounting
I acquired a Ranger this past weekend and just got around to taking it out of the cabinet.? I noticed a problem that I've seen in photos of several for-sale Rangers lately? - there were only three screws holding the power transformer (the rear screw towards the center of the chassis was missing).? As a result, the remaining mounting tab on that side of the transformer has been bent a bit and the transformer leans just slightly towards the side of the cabinet.? This is a factory wired unit, so I assume that the screw was originally there, but that might not be true. If the screw were missing and you shipped on of these units, normal handling by a shipper would likely result in the transformer tab getting bent like mine.? Replacing the screw is probably impossible due to the location of the accessory socket on the rear of the chassis and all the components associated with that socket.? Any comments?
