WTB Tank Coil for Viking Ranger I
Purchased a Viking Ranger (I) that someone flipped upside down and crushed the Tank Coil. ?While I have repaired it as best I can, the tuning for 20 and 15 meters is difficult and 10 meter tuning impossible. ?
?
Anyone have a Ranger I Tank Coil for sale?

Re: Need Information on a 'Johnson MATCHSTICK Multi-band Vertical Antenna'
Thanks for the reply, Bob.? I appreciate it.
?
One of the earlier replies from Mike, K5MGR, produced a QST ad from February, 1957.? Ya' just never know where these expeditions will lead.
?
My plans include careful disassembly, creating a schematic, cleaning everything, determining if it's a DC or AC circuit (runs on AC and switches with DC, I suspect), replacing whatever components need to be replaced and integrating it into some yet-to-be-determined multiband antenna system or other multi-device control box.? If nothing else, it's a really interesting find and might make an interesting tidbit in an Electric Radio issue somewhere down the road. And I do have a Gotham V-160 Vertical still in the factory box that might marry-up to it..... 73. John N7NWL ? |
WTB: Power Supply/Modulator for Viking 500
Good day folks.?
I just obtained a Viking 500 RF deck that over time was separated from its power supply/modulator unit.? It is a long shot, I know, but this group is probably my best chance in finding one.? Even an incomplete unit will be considered.? I guarantee I will bring it back to life.??

Re: Need Information on a 'Johnson MATCHSTICK Multi-band Vertical Antenna'
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJohn,? it's ironic to me that you posted your question just days after I mentioned the Johnson Matchstick to a couple of buddies in an email. When I moved to northwest Illinois in 1986,? there
were still three electronics parts stores operating in Rockford
Illinois, and like most they'd been around for years and at one
time at least had sold ham gear.?? Having started to collect
boatanchors I made the trip to each, hoping of course to find a
Viking Desk Kilowatt in some dusty back room, but of course that
didn't happen.?? However one store (whose name I can't recall)
said the only piece of radio stuff they had was - you guessed it
- the control box for a Johnson Matchstick antenna just like
yours!? It was on a high shelf and the guy said it was probably
only there because it wasn't worth the effort to climb up and
move it.? I asked if they had the rest of the antenna, but he
said the box was all they had, and I suspect that if it was in
inventory, the outdoor components could have easily been
mistaken for junk.? Or if it was installed on the shop as a demo
antenna,? it probably wouldn't have lasted past the next roof
repair.? In any case, the Matchstick evidently did not sell well
for EFJ. Sorry I can't be of any real help as that's the only time I've seen any part of the Matchstick and only recalled it last week while reminiscing about the radio supply stores we used to have.? It wouldn't be difficult to make your own relay-switched base loading coil that could be controlled by it, but there are probably better antenna options today. 73, Bob W9RAN

Re: Need Information on a 'Johnson MATCHSTICK Multi-band Vertical Antenna'
Can't help much, I have no paperwork to provide. This takes me back well over 60 years, a ham who lived a few miles from me had one. Can't even remember his name or call now. As you surmise this is the control box for part of a complete EF Johnson vertical antenna system. I vaguely recall the antenna was well over 30 foot high, maybe closer to 40 foot and the tuning was done using the control box to select a motor located at the antenna base that matched the transmitter and antenna.?Don't even know for sure what was in the box at the antenna base, can only guess now. Sorry I can't provide any more information but at least I did see one once. ? 73, Paul W2EC

( The wafer of SW 3B should have been a much larger and more robust RF capable switch) ?( SW3A&B is the same switch assembly used for the Ranger, Viking and Valiant.) ? This effectively increases the spacing between the front and rear rotating contact assemblies of switch 3B to a much safer 1/16~1/8".? ?? We also discovered some burned fixed contacts on SW3W&B. We replaced these as needed during rebuild. ? Thank You for allowing me to post this

Transcrypt Transpeater III
I used to have a copy of the specs and user guide of the Transcrypt Transpeater III but I no longer have it. We used them in the fire service back in the day. Does anyone have an idea where I might be able to find some information on this particular piece of equipment? I spend hours on archive.org and there is some old archives of the websites but no product. I'm searching for anything relating to it, anywhere from an electronics diagram to the piece of equipment itself.
