Viking Challenger Kit - Unassembled in Box
I bought this Viking Challenger kit about 5 years ago.? The top flap had been torn off but it looks like the contentsd have never been taken out.? It's packed so tighlty I doubt I could remove everything for a contents display and be able to repack it same way..? I would enjoy going through the assembly but I have a Viking 500 that will keep me busy for quite some time plus I have several home-brew projects that need to get finished.? I paid $475 for it and I'm not trying to make any money.? If there is a serious buyer I would take the risk of videoing my taking the contents out of the box.? Although I am new to this group, I have been an active member of the Collins group and can provide many references.? Local pickup always preferred.

Hello ? We recently came across a collection of Military Manuals for test equipment, earliest date is 1946, latest is the late 50's. About 10 original military manuals in all.
Various types: A couple of oscilloscopes, analog meters, etc... All are OEM military manuals in pretty good shape. Will make very fine copies..

Johnson Viking Matchbox Modifications
Joe,
I have modified both my 275W and KW matchboxes. Here's the changes:
1) Remove the T/R relay and wire straight through.
2) Add two ceramic feedthrus to add capacitance to the main tuning cap for 160M reasonance.
3) Disconnect the link coupling coil from ground and the input. Add a four position ceramic switch and tap the link in four places. Add a 350pF variable capacitor in series between ground and the cold end of the link coil. Feed the RF into the matchbox via a So-239 with the center pin going to the link coil tap switch.
The changes allow the Matchbox to achieve a near-perfect match (SWR1.1:1) on most any antenna. I use the KW matchbox with a full-wave delta loop fed with 450Z open-wire line matched to a Globe King 500A running about 300W on AM. Works great. I use the smaller matchbox only for Field Day so I placed the link controls on the rear panel. Very easy modification.
However, the KW Matchbox was not so easy. I wanted the link switch and cap on the front panel for ease of use. The most difficult part of that modification was creating a shelf in the KW matchbox on the upper right side for the link switch and capacitor, and getting the faceplate holes lined up. But, the job turned out to be a nice looking and functional tuner.
Attached are a couple of documents that outline the details.

My plans include careful disassembly, creating a schematic, cleaning everything, determining if it's a DC or AC circuit (runs on AC and switches with DC, I suspect), replacing whatever components need to be replaced and integrating it into some yet-to-be-determined multiband antenna system or other multi-device control box.? If nothing else, it's a really interesting find and might make an interesting tidbit in an Electric Radio issue somewhere down the road.
And I do have a Gotham V-160 Vertical still in the factory box that might marry-up to it.....

John,? it's ironic to me that you posted your
question just days after I mentioned the Johnson Matchstick to a
couple of buddies in an email.
When I moved to northwest Illinois in 1986,? there
were still three electronics parts stores operating in Rockford
Illinois, and like most they'd been around for years and at one
time at least had sold ham gear.?? Having started to collect
boatanchors I made the trip to each, hoping of course to find a
Viking Desk Kilowatt in some dusty back room, but of course that
didn't happen.?? However one store (whose name I can't recall)
said the only piece of radio stuff they had was - you guessed it
- the control box for a Johnson Matchstick antenna just like
yours!? It was on a high shelf and the guy said it was probably
only there because it wasn't worth the effort to climb up and
move it.? I asked if they had the rest of the antenna, but he
said the box was all they had, and I suspect that if it was in
inventory, the outdoor components could have easily been
mistaken for junk.? Or if it was installed on the shop as a demo
antenna,? it probably wouldn't have lasted past the next roof
repair.? In any case, the Matchstick evidently did not sell well
for EFJ.
Sorry I can't be of any real help as that's the
only time I've seen any part of the Matchstick and only recalled
it last week while reminiscing about the radio supply stores we
used to have.? It wouldn't be difficult to make your own
relay-switched base loading coil that could be controlled by it,
but there are probably better antenna options today.
