Re: John Daniel b.1623 of Over Tabley and Barbados
Hi Jack,
? ?You are probably correct. Unfortunately, this participant does not identify his ancestry in the description of his ancestry on FTDNA so every time I want to look at his results, I have to once again figure out who he is.... He has not been responsive to contact attempts for some time and I lost my emails during the time we were communicating to a computer crash. I really wanted to get him to assist in confirming the Y DNA of this family.....? Cheers, Kevin |

Hi William,
? ? There is an authoritative report from a professional genealogist in the UK regarding the line of William Daniel who married Dorothy Forth but as far as I am aware nothing authoritative has been published regarding the descendants of Thomas Danyers. That William Daniel was from the Over Tabley family, though. That does not mean that there is no authoritative work on this topic, I am just not aware of any such documented research. What is your interest in this line? I have a copy of the report regarding William Daniel and Dorothy Forth, which concluded that there was no connection to William Daniel of Middlesex County, VA to the Over Tabley Daniels and that none of the children of Willam and Dorothy Forth Daniel immigrated to America. I think the report concluded that that line became extinct with the children of William Daniel, but it has been 20 years since I read the report, so I do not trust my memory on that. I only have a hard copy of that report and it is in storage. I am in the process of moving so will eventually get to that set of file cabinets which are in storage. The misinformation about a connection between the Over Tabley Daniels and Middlesex, VA Daniels is still widely circulated, so I should publish this report so it is not lost. The report was generated at the request of two wealthy Daniel brothers in Washington, D.C. who hired professional genealogists in the U.S. and U.K. in an attempt to prove the ancestry of William Daniel of Middlesex. Their genealogists failed in the attempt but generated some very good research based on primary records. Both brothers were elderly at the time I corresponded with them and are now deceased. I received my copy of the report from them. One of the brothers was among the early participants in the Daniel Y DNA Project in 2002-3. The Y DNA of the line of William Daniel of Middlesex, County, VA has long since been proved using primary record research and Y DNA testing.? A descendant of the Chesire Daniel family is participating in the Daniel Y DNA Project but has had no matches to anyone else in the project. The Y DNA of this line cannot, however, be considered proved since there is only one proved participant from this line in the project. To prove a Y DNA line, direct male descendants from two sons of the suspected ancestor must first be proved using primary records and then tested and match on a Y DNA test.? Kevin |

Some record collation shows: John Daniel, the s/o Samuel (1729-1798) s/o Robert (1691-1742) s/o Robert (d. 1720) s/o Capt Wm of VA Middlesex has been conflated with or has been replaced in error on most trees by the John Daniel who married Susanna Couch. ----- Some records for John Daniel (d. DNA Haplogroup
Hello,?
I finally got my Y DNA results. I did the 37 marker test through Family Tree DNA. My haplogroup came back as I-P37. I'm not sure what to do with this information now. There is a list of people who also are matches for the same haplogroup. Can someone help me understand how to use this info to determine my correct ancestry?? |
Re: John Daniel in pamiller Tranquility
Charles you are correct. I have confused the two different Martin's. I emailed Pam that I had. I have 28 matches for Martin, and 44 matches for Zachariah Yancey with Great Aunt Virginia Daniel DNA.?
Without a YDNA, I can only work with matches thru Ancestry & FTDNA .? James G Daniel abt 1818 VA married Tabitha Bumpass - 4th GGP thats where the trail went cold. Who were James's parents?? Matches lead me to Martin & Avarilla R Yancey. I have not found a will on either. James & Tabitha had 9 children. Hi, Kathy and all,
?
Some quick stuff on John Daniel>Martin. My comments in [brackets].
?
-----?
Martin's birth, online trees seem all over the place. The guardianship, probate, and tax records narrow his birth pretty precisely to 1778, very early 1779 at the latest.
?
He has several guardians through the years. They are all appointed until he's legally allowed to choose (age 14 for boys, 12 for girls):
LDS film 008196650 item 2 Granvill Ct Minutes 1792-1795
November Court 1793, p. 113:
Martin Daniel comes into Court and being above the age of fourteen years, Chooses John Howard his Guardian, who enters into Bond in the sum of 1000 pounds with Willis Roberts and Robert Downey his Securities.
?
LDS film 1906926 Wills and estate papers (Hillsborough District), 1772-1806?
file of John Daniel:
[I'm just putting a couple of the sheets that speak to Martin's age, but this is an absolutely luscious file. I've wallowed in it sooooo many times in SLC.]
-Mar 1789 - by Tho Daniel bond Mackburg [Mecklenburg?], by Howel Lewis bond, by ball due M. Daniel... Granville County, At the request & by the consent of Peter Bennett Guardian of the estate of Martin Daniel who is at present of lawful age We the under written subscribers have examined the above acct & find a ball. due to Martin Daniel of ?52.13.4 as above stated. Thomas Owen J.P., Thomas Vass [so it can't be 1789, Martin comes of age in 1799]? on left side of this sheet is Bennetts acct of ?33.15 for 4 1/2 years services as Gardian (Nov. 1792, so Martin is not of age in 1789)
?[My quick description of the page is tricky in terms of it saying Martin is of age. The top shows Bennett's accts, so 1789 fits since father John's death. But it's in a section of 1798-99 papers when later guardian Robert Hester had demanded an acctg by Peter Bennet. Martin's gdn accts show him still going to school in 1792 and boarding with Charles Yancey, so he's not of age in 1789. I think the accounts are for up to 1789 and then the examination and confirmation of the accounts at the bottom is much later after Robert Hester has taken over guardianship of Martin. But the examination and certification is not dated separately.]
-16 Apr 1798 Peter Bennett replies to suit, that Feb last in conversation Hester said he would direct his atty Potter not to proceed, that Bennett has paid ?150-200 as part payment of balance due...
-Apr 1801 [at Hillsborough Superior Ct] Martin Daniel v. Peter Bennett.? Bennett deposes again that Hester agreed not to proceed...that said Daniel after he came of age agreed that this suit should not be proceeded in, that they would settle amounts themselves. that he went 3 times to home of said Daniel in the year 1799 and beginning of 1800 and could not find him at home, and that the said Daniel moved to the state of Virginia in or about May 1800.
?
[Also in this file, Martin Daniel is signing for his own receipts around Feb 1799.]
?

On the Granville tax lists, there are guardians for Martin Daniel until 1799 when he's listed in his own right as a poll. Then he does the land swap with Samuel Bugg of Mecklenburg and moves there.

Hello, I believe John Daniel, to be my 7th Great Grandfather. Due to our family having only one Daniel male and can't be found, we are not able to do a Y DNA. My Great Aunt Virginia Daniel has done a test and has helped in confirming our Daniel tree.? Now the ever present issue, who was his father?? John's son Martin, spent his adult life in Mecklenburg Co, VA. Martin's children were John Walker, Stark, Elizabeth, Sarah, Milley, Wiley, Mary & Martin Jr. Martin Jr married Avarilla Yancey, children Stith, Thomas, Margaret, Dolly, Zachariah, Nancy, Stephen, Terresa & James. Pam also states that John's brother William passed BY 7 May 1882. There are two William Daniel who passed that year. One in Mecklenburg Co, VA But I don't want to assume that the William Pam speaks of is from Mecklenburg.? As you can see, some the children's names match others here in group.? Any tips and info is appreciated. Thanks Kathy? Virginia Daniel FTDNA kit # B809010 |

Because it is my own family, lord knows, and we still live in the same area, I know the GA folks are not my direct line people. It does seem like everyone of the Thos & Eliz Satterwhite tribe, except my TC Daniel, hauls off to GA and by the grace of the almighty, for the most part takes the Jefferson name with them, but Chesley, Key and Cary continue to pop up. ?TC died in civil war prison & wife comes to SC with her kids. And you?are correct, Pam, all of the allied family names match up to the present date, obnoxiously so … my aunt is a née Daniel now Allen… including the Robert Elliott on Thos & Eliz Satterwhite’s marriage bond and the Allen Rogers on TC & Mary Shipp’s. That is my current mode of attack. Chesley’s (Josiah’s brother) daughter Martha 1763-1839 m. 1786 George Daniel (not sure who he is yet) but Martha dies at home with daughter Julia in Marion District of SC at Catfish Creek…my own personal Garden of Eden miasma from whence most of both sides (if you can call it that) of my family hails or arrives eventually. It is certainly a repository for surnames coming from Va and Granville County NC and they keep naming kids the same Christian names. One of my blasted husband’s name is Vivian. that’s a little Middlesex joke for you. It is so bad I have started calling the problem person du jour George Foreman. My only Daniel uncle or one of his 2 boys are going to do a Big Y- heavens for little boys…uncle had 5 sisters!? |

Hey, Elizabeth, Joe, and all,
?
Here's a timeline of info from my records for Thomas Daniel (s/o Josiah) who md. Elizabeth Satterwhite), with some stuff to distinguish between the various contemporary Thomas Daniels in Granville County. Much of this you already have, I know. My comments/questions are in [brackets]. I put XX in front of data that are on trees about Thomas s/o Josiah that I believe are incorrect. The trees at ancestry and familysearch seem to be conflating the records of the various Thomas Daniels of Granville, all distinguishable by the tax, land, court, and probate records.

?
Thomas Sr. has 1m 16-26, 1m 26-45, 1m 45+, 2f 16-26, 1f 45+, 7 slaves.
This Thomas Sr. is the one who bought 200a from Joel Pope in Feb 1787 (Granv DB O491) and 249a from Pope in Dec 1787 (Caswell DB E230. The land was in Caswell and Granville). He is in the tax lists on Aaron's Creek for 449a and then later it is called 452a (including in the 1809 and 1811 lists). This is the Thomas who d. 1831, wf Mary d. 1838. Their kids include: Merriman, Jane md. Sterling Harris, Susannah md. Randall Wilkerson, Lilly md. A. G. Moore, William. This Thomas Sr. did live in the Country Line District where Josiah was, but he's on Aaron's Creek, while Josiah is on Grassey Creek/Hay Meadow Branch and Thomas' land purchased from Chesley is on Grassey aroound Blues Mountain. There's no interaction in the records I've found between this Thomas Sr. and the Middlesex Daniels. Thomas Sr. and his kids' records are also found in Caswell and Person counties.

A War of 1812 Pension Application is attached to Thomas s/o Josiah in a gazillion trees. It's a different Thomas. The application file is free at fold3, clarifying facts abound in it. I think this was the Thomas Daniel of the east county, on Nutbush, md. Elizabeth/Eliza Daniel, she the d/o Joseph and Nelly Daniel. A John Daniel Sr., of Warren County bought 145a on Nutbush in 1816. Thomas Daniel pops out in the tax lists 1816-1823 (at a much better age for service). He is taxed on 145a in Henderson on Nutbush/Crooked Run in 1818-1819.

Trees put the 1820 Granville Census Thomas Daniel as belonging to Thomas s/o Josiah and Elizabeth. But this? Thomas is listed next to Nelly Daniel (his mother-in-law, described above in War of 1812 app) and they are in the Henderson District in both the tax lists and the Census.

So, anyone have ideas on where Thomas Daniel and Elizabeth Satterwhite are in 1820-1830? I've had a possible theory for ages, never ground down hard on it. It doesn't fit perfectly, but it's the closest I've found, and Pulaski is “on the way west” to Harris County. Interested in any ideas.
?
1820 Census GA Pulaski.?
Thomas Daniel: [The lack of a couple more boys 0-10 and 10-16 is a real problem.]
1m 0-10 [?Tandy age 9/10 or the Thomas Jefferson age 11 or the Thomas Cary?]
1m 10-16 [?the David age 14 or the Jefferson Jordan age 12 in trees? I don't think there's a David.]
1m 18-26 [in 16-26 but not 16-18 column, so ?the John in trees age 19?]
1m 45+ [?Thomas age 51]
?
2f 10-16 [?Parthenia age 15?]
2f 16-26 [?Sarah age 23? and ?Martha age 16-17 or is she in 10-16 column?]
1f 26-45 [?Elizabeth age 43?]
?
The 1830 Census also shows an Elizabeth Daniel in Pulaski, but the ages and children do not match the 1820 family well enough; I just don't think it's Elizabeth Satterwhite Daniel in the 1830 Pulaski census.
?
I sure wish somebody would write up a records proof of all the children shown as belonging to Thomas Daniel and Elizabeth Satterwhite. The various trees as they stand just seem to show too many kids!
?
-----?
Elizabeth, I don't know about your Thomas Cary Daniel specifically, but there's a young Thomas Daniel in GA Harris near the Daniel/Satterwhite families that looks pretty certain as a son, so your Thomas Cary would be a second son named Thomas born within just a couple years of the other. Also problematic because there are so many Daniels in Wake, and Thomas Cary was still there in 1832 for his marriage, more so since it surely looks like the Daniel/Satterwhite family had left Granville by 1820. My Wake County records are too early to help, but I notice that Allen Rogers, the bondsman for Thomas Cary's 1832 marriage, is maybe the son, b. 1797, of Thomas Rogers and Elizabeth Allen, and that your Thomas Cary named a daughter Martha Rogers Daniel. Is there some namesake stuff going on there that maybe ties them more to the Wake Daniels?
?
And of course the big question is, are there male descendants for yDNA testing, or tests already? What do they indicate??
?
?
Regards from CA, hoping maybe we can sort this all out!

Re: Thomas Daniel, born of Josia, son of James & Jenny Hicks Daniel b 1743/44 Albemarle Co, Va, d 1811 Granville Co, NC
Dear Joe, Thomas Cary Daniel is my 3rd great grandfather. His dob is circa 1810 and I believe in Granville Co or Wake Co NC. He married Mary Shipp, bond 16 Jan 1832 in Wake Co NC. ?He is in the census records 1840, 1850 in Wake Co. and 1860 in Robeson Co. (NB- ‘60 census mistakes his middle initial as R). The name Cary came family associations and misspellings from the Union POW records during his imprisonment. He died at the Union prison camp at Pt. Lookout, St Mary’s Co, MD in 4 Mar 1864. I have documentation for his wife and many of his children to the present day. Thomas Cary’s progeny are found in NC and SC in future generations and those are my folks. I live in the same area of SC. Because I am new to this group, I am not sure if this is the proper forum to discuss in further detail our possible connections, but I am eager to do so! I also see that my email address is my forum name…oops. But do get in touch! |
Re: Thomas Daniel, born of Josia, son of James & Jenny Hicks Daniel b 1743/44 Albemarle Co, Va, d 1811 Granville Co, NC
I would like info on the Thomas Kary Daniel also. I have an autosomal dna match for my dad's kit on Ancestry that appears to descend from said Thomas Kary . I have not been able to confirm this Thomas Kary's? connection to any other person or group. My line appears to be connected to Brunswick VA and there were some men with the Cary name there, knowing that , that in itself, may not mean anything? |
Thomas Daniel, born of Josia, son of James & Jenny Hicks Daniel b 1743/44 Albemarle Co, Va, d 1811 Granville Co, NC
Hi group. Has any one done research on this Thomas of Josiah’s will? He is often referred to as Thomas Jefferson Daniel? I am interested in him and his descendants which may include a son, the proven person, Thomas Cary/Kary Daniel d. 1864 as a POW in Maryland.? Many thanks, |
Re: Is anyone in contact with Pam Miller?
Hey Pam!!!?? I'm so glad our group was able to find you.? ![]() Kevin....when time allows, I'd love to correspond with you about the YDNA results from descendants of my Martin Daniel Sr. (ca. 1750-1811).? At one time, I was in touch with a Jim Daniel from Missouri who had his YDNA tested in the early days at the 37 marker level.? He descends from a William Powell Daniel born circa 1808 in Mecklenburg Co., VA and had matches to another gentleman who descended from my Martin Daniel Sr's son Stark Daniel.? Jim theorized that his William Powell Daniel was in some way related to the older William Powell Daniel born circa 1755.??
It's been quite a few years since I've looked at the data and its possible there have been more submissions that match.??
I look forward to hearing from you on those matches.

All is well out here in CA, just haven't been in this group, my oops. What can I tell you? My website went down for a while in late Sep-early Oct due to a weird thing about my account, two logins, both worked but only one counted to keep the site alive (not the one I was using). Took quite a while to get them to reinstate the site after it fell off, yada, yada, yada. It's been back, same url:?. Nothing new for Daniel on it in a while, so the file posted is probably still pretty current. Hope all is well with everybody. I haven't been doing much Daniel research in the last few years. After obsessing on it for so very long, I've finally gotten back into my other lines. Patsy, apologies. Yes, I'm so slow/absent in communication, as Kevin knows well, but I have a recent notice to contact you, aiming for it this coming week. Kevin, can't resist responding to your guess on my age, so close but I'll give back a couple of the years, OK? I'm 68! ;)? Regards to all, sorry for the disappearing act, and...poof, gone again!
