Randall Research modified DQ-10s 3
I do not know if these were a kit mod or a ‘factory’ mod and don’t know much about what transpired back then. Got these 18 months ago in tired shape and have been avoiding working on them. What they were is Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers, non-mirror imaged, film caps with replacement Audax tweeters and JVC replacement supertweeters. The crossovers were also modded with double bypass caps seemingly all around. A 1.0 and 0.1μF added to most caps. The 80μF ‘lytic for the midwoofer still original. As received, these had dirty original grille cloth, a cracked chunk of hardboard for the dome midrange on one speaker and missing fuse holder caps. I pulled the midrange tweeter superstructure to fix the hardboard. Removed the grille cloth and shelved the project for other work because I knew I was going to mirror-image this pair and this repaired structure would be on the other side of the cabinet. Did my homework on these and found https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/dq-10-questions.302000/. There is not a lot about this upgrade because it was before the internet era. Tomek is very interested in knowing how they sound so I finally agreed to work on them in Feb. Finished them for listening, not cosmetics, replacing the ‘lytic in the one I was mirroring. Hooked em up and they are bright. Turned the tweeter control down and invited the boys over for a listen. @Aerobat and his copilot Terry dropped by for this listening, comparing my DQ-10s restored just like the pair I sold to Terry a couple years ago and these Randall Research DQ-10s. We also were going to audition some MM cartridges as Mark is loving his micro ridge retipped XSV-3000 Pickering. Has the power sound for good rock and roll. More on that in TT forum later. Back to our day of listening. The RRs sounded bad with blurred sound and less bass. They made my 10s sound special. Talked about the differences and moved to the cartridges. The guys said the rig sounds really good, of course we were playing one of Mark’s favorite female vocalists at the time but it is compromised by the offset nature of the two pair of speakers being switched. They have heard double Dahlquist here previously. The next couple days I was thinking about what F1nut said about bypass caps in the crossover, artifacts and was going to pm him, but he has left ak. I was even thinking that my 10s with polypropylene caps vs Mylar might have an influence. Still thinking about the issues and less bass hit me wrt phase. OK I screwed up and got that wrong. Here is the Crown OC-150a switch box I rarely use but perfect for this chore. Here is the crossover in the regular DQ-10s. That is a film cap in red on the far end replacing the 80μF ‘lytic cap. Now that the speakers, all 4 of them are in phase, it sounds good in here. Either pair has clear sound and differences are mostly top end. I need to listen more. Folks hate the Motorola piezo tweeter in the 10s because of reputation, not sound quality in this speaker. Since this horn tweeter will reproduce from a couple thousand to over 20 thousand and it can handle a lot of power it is used in lots of sound reinforcement speakers that just don’t sound that good…bad reputation. In the DQ-10 it crosses over at 12,000Hz and doesn’t screw up the sound as it adds sparkle. But wouldn’t a ribbon tweeter be better? And the dome tweeter can be upgraded, too. Enter the Randal Research mods. I can switch pairs and the sound is similar, not like Sunday when the RRs were out of phase. I was surprised to hear the damage to the clarity by this simple issue. I had not heard that kind of sonic degradation from OOP before. And I know I’ve listened to speakers wired wrong for short periods of time. Interesting

Recap kits 6
When wondering around eBay I found the follow recap kits. They appear to be of high quality and reasonable price. This one is for pair of DQ10. Although I have no experience with this seller he appears to be legit and the product is as well. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=dahldq10+recap&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2332490.m570.l1313

DQ20 tweeter 35
Fellas. Can you tell me the polarity of the Scanspeak tweeter. Black/white, green/black. Which is which? The back label is gone where I assumed the +/- was located. Got my new ones today and didn't want to fudge it up. Thanks Mick

DQ-10 stacking stands - inquiry 4
Hello all, I've done a quick search of this group's database and have found pictures of a few stands capable of stacking two DQ-10's. Does anyone have more information on potential builds? As I've never heard this type of setup, looking for input from folks - this will help me determine whether to pursue this project. Also, anyone know if someone is manufacturing stacking stands? As always, appreciate your input and wish everyone a great day of listening! Regards, Persi

Magnat mid
I'm away from home so I'm asking for your help. I'm replacing my Magnat mids in my DQ20's and the seller is asking for cabinet hole dimensions. Depth before inner vent tube and cabinet hole size. If anyone can rattle these off by memory, I'd be greatly appreciative. Mick

DQ10 Woofer Distortion 27
I've been experimenting and adding a few dbx components in order to improve dynamic range of cassette and vinyl playback. Component include sub-harmonic synth (120X-DS and Dynamic Range Expander with Impact Restoration 3BX III). However, I have have recently notice left channel distortion coming from the left DQ10 woofer, when played at a higher volume and with all dBx equipment bypassed. The DQ10 pair has all original cross-over components. I have confirm that this is not an amplifier issue by swapping channels. I am trying to understand the failure mechanism when a speaker is blown. Is it an over heated voice coil wiring where insulation simply melts off the coil, a voice coil that over extends normal excursion, or perhaps failure of a cross-over component? Wondering if I can repair. Playing back a 200 Hz tone at higher volume and lightly touching the cone, the distortion seem to be tamed. The attached image shows a left and right channel distortion measurement with REW and a UMIK-2. Above 400 Hz, it seems (at least to my hears) to play normally. Would hated to replace the one original advent driver. Suspect I would have to replace both. Any suggestion for a good replacement if Woofer is beyond repair.

Magnat mid 10
I just recapped my 20's recently but didn't replace the cement resistors. I have a slight crackling in the mid Magnat even at low volume..and it seems appears on different music tracks. Weird right! Could someone help me by circling the components responsible for the mid on the DQ20 schematic? I don't have any testing equipment to track problems so I guess I'm asking you all for what may be the culprit? I mentioned before the movement is very smooth when manipulation by hand and no tears or damage visually. Btw the resistors all looked good when I had everything apart for cap change. Would a bad solder connection cause something like this? Anyway, any comments helpful and ridiculed....would be appreciated. Mick

DQ20 midrange 2
Good morning. I've got a 'fuzz' coming from my left DQ20 mid. I haven't done the cap replacement on that speaker yet (this weekend they both get their new 12" Advent replacements and the new caps on left side). The mid has no rubbing sounds while gently manipulated and the cone and foam surrounds are in beautiful condition. I can't hear it all the time...just certain songs. What my friends, could it possibly be? Am I missing something? Obvious? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Gear 12
Hey group! I just wanted to personally thank those who have given input to my questions. It's been a great bunch since I'm just a new member. I was curious if anyone wanted to share a quick snapshot of their gear. I like to see what others have put together to run their Dahlquist speakers. I'll start. Be well all! Mick

DQ20 woofer 7
Hey all. Looks like I should have pulled the grills when I purchased the speakers. I've been hoodwinked. The images are what I found while doing a cap replacement. Any opinion on these and what aftermarket would you suggest for a 12" hole that I have available? Something reasonable please.

Dahlquist DQ20's 9
Hey all. About to do the cap replacement and opened my speakers up to find something that made me wonder...all of the micofarads are correct but the voltage is different. Madisound sent per the schematic but it didn't list voltage. The sent one are all 400v but most old ones are 150..the bass crossover is 68uF but thr old one is 35vac..explains why the new one 3x the size. Please advise as I have my speakers spread all over my wife's kitchen island. Thx Mick

DQ20 11
Hi all! New member here. I've the pleasure of being the permanent caretaker of a pair of DQ20'S. I've done the cosmetics already and now is the time for 'the guts'. I've ordered new Solen caps from Josh at Madisound per the schematic. He's told be there is no polarity or direction..and I believe him! BUT I've also heard that there is an preferred direction with something about the outer cap goes to the lowest side of something? Listen, I'm no electrician so it's all foreign to me! Has anyone heard anything about this? I trust Madisounds information but thought I'd ask you all. Also what should I expect with the change? All the values are remaining the same and I'm only changing the 6 caps per speaker..nothing else. Any input with experienced folks that have done this, would be greatly appreciated. They sound great already but the insides must be getting tired. How much will this change the sound sonically? Thanks again for any input. Sincerely Mick
