I've been experimenting and adding a few dbx components in order to improve dynamic range of cassette and vinyl playback.? Component include sub-harmonic synth (120X-DS and Dynamic Range Expander with Impact Restoration 3BX III).? However, I have have recently notice left channel distortion coming from the left DQ10 woofer, when played at a higher volume and with all dBx equipment bypassed.? The DQ10 pair has all original cross-over components.? I have confirm that this is not an amplifier issue by swapping channels.? I am trying to understand the failure mechanism when a speaker is blown.? Is it an over heated voice coil wiring where insulation simply melts off the coil, a voice coil that over extends normal excursion, or perhaps failure of a cross-over component?? Wondering if I can repair.? Playing back a 200 Hz tone at higher volume and lightly touching the cone, the distortion seem to be tamed.? The attached image shows a left and right channel distortion measurement with REW and a UMIK-2.? Above 400 Hz, it seems (at least to my hears) to play normally.? Would hated to replace the one original advent driver.? Suspect I would have to replace both.? Any suggestion for a good replacement if Woofer is beyond repair.? ??

Just a thought…
Unscrew the woofer, rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall. ??
These are old drivers and if you have some sag in the woofer this might resolve it. ?
It costs nothing to test it.?

Woofer rotation solved my similar?problem with a Bozak B302a.? So certainly good advice.? I have DQ-20 too and never had to rotate but Bozak was probably ten years older?

The sub harmonic synth may have damaged the woofer by causing it to try to reproduce frequencies below what it is capable of.?
It could be a bent or misshaped voice coil or maybe the surround has torn loose on one side. Inverting the woofer as described may work, at least temporarily.
?
But based on your curves I suspect the two 4 ohm resistors that are wired in parallel with left woofer. If they show any signs of burning be suspicious. Either way you might want ?to test ?with an ohmmeter. Measure across the wires that go to the woofer. (Usually green and white) Anything higher than 5 ohms means those resistors are burned open and both should be replaced.?
In either case if you want more bass you might want add sub(s) and a crossover that properly high passes the DQ10.?

I have a set of original yellow cap xo’s in storage. I’m not sure what’s going on with your xo ‘s, but the lQQk a mess with wires cut and bridged . I’m sure you know ?that some of the cap connections have bridges under the board. Theres images in the files illustrating the connections?

Ed when in circuit that is about right and indicates the resistors are probably OK. The voice coil should also not be melted.
Still could be mis centering or voice coil deformation. Did the speaker make any popping sounds before you noticed this distortion? If so you probably have a situation where the voice coil contacts the back plate and bends the coil in or out.?
Generally easier to just replace if that is the case.

Some good news. ?Removed the woofer last night and found the voice coil slightly rubbing. ?On closer inspection I discovered that the glue holding the surround had let go in several places. ?Should be an easy fix. ?It’s interesting that whomever previously replaced the surrounds did so with the concave side of the surrounds facing outside facing toward the listener. ?I don’t think it matters, but found it odd. ?Thank you everyone for all your suggestions.

My original 'Advent' woofers were stolen, or too far gone . . . I replaced them with Simply Speaker 12"ers and they are just fine. I know originality is a good thing, but just sayin' . . . it is hard to repair or replace the old Advents with the square magnet.?

I'll testify to Simply Speakers Advent 12's I just installed in my 20's (I had no choice to rebuild.) And they sound fantastic. The fit was exact with mounting screws. Purists cover your eyes!! No but really...I'm really happy!
My original 'Advent' woofers were stolen, or too far gone . . . I replaced them with Simply Speaker 12"ers and they are just fine. I know originality is a good thing, but just sayin' . . . it is hard to repair or replace the old Advents with the square magnet.?

Well Johnny...there's the twist! I didn't follow due diligence when I purchased. It had non Advent speakers installed. But....from what I've heard from the original 10's with Masonite they are at least as good if not better. And I'm still stretching them out. The fit and finish is outstanding. Everything lines up perfect.
