Early? DQ-10 Crossover version ID / upgrade info help needed 24
Hi everyone, hope you and families are well. Been looking for information on what I have, and suggestions on what should be done. Not a tech or am knowledgeable about specifics like brands of parts etc., but have a basic general understanding. Well, bought my 10s, S/Ns 01927 – 01932, around winter 1975- early 76 (or 76-77?) from the original owner who got Magnaplanars. Had the small legs (got the stands when they came out), and had the mirror image done in 1977. Had the woofers (they are the Advents) rebuilt by Dahlquist in 1988. In 1990 I installed the Mylar caps as seen in the pictures. Don’t remember what the originals were. Have no idea of what brand these are but I did one speaker and then A/Bd them and there was a distinct improvement. Mainly looking for advice/info on the crossovers. Just looking for maybe a ‘tune-up’, not getting too deep into this. Have not heard these since fall 1994 (long story) and want to set them up for my son at his house. He has had them there for some years but I am now just getting to the point where I need to get this done. Now he digs his music but is not into the Audio system world. He would like to have whatever I can set up for him to use occasionally and delve into my vinyl collection. I know he will love it once he hears them. Due to living arrangement and health/medical issues I hope to be able to share some time with my son and hear my 10s again. So, in all these years, I have yet to see a picture of a DQ-10 crossover like mine with the tweeter fuse mounted on the crossover board and not the baffle. This is something I would really like to know about. Came across a post here by John van Son #5853 Sept. 11 (DQ-10 Regnar Cap Upgrade) where I finally found a reference to one of the things I have wondered about. I have 2 40uF caps instead of a single 80uF. Am confused about seeing pictures of large 80uF caps and then small ones. Can someone clarify that? Suggestions? Thanks for reading this and hope I didn’t ramble on too much. New at posting, hope this comes across ok.

DQ-20 / Large Advent Question 7
A couple years ago a purchased a set of DQ-20i’s that had the wrong woofers installed (JBLs… don’t ask). The other day, I bought a pair of Large Advents and cannibalized the woofers out if them. Now, I have a fairly pristine pair of Large Avents with no woofers. The boxes and grills are in great shape, the fried egg tweeters are perfect… Any thoughts on what I should do with them? I don’t really want them, but I have a soft spot in my heart for beautiful pieces of audio gear, and would prefer these go to someone who will truly appreciate them, not someone who wants to stuff a pair JBL woofers in them and blast them out a dorm window until they catch fire. Thoughts?

DQ-10 What is the recommended power input? 39
I want to purchase a new (me to me) amp for my DQ-10 speakers. What is the minimum wattage I should buy? What are classic/vintage amps and some models? I have a Pioneer SX780 (35 watts) that I use with its Pioneer CS35 speakers. I want to stick with the 1970' era amps.

Where to buy midcentury looking legs 48
Hello, I'm buying a set of DQ10's that have long lost thier stands. I've seen some with 3 midcentury looking legs. Where can I buy some of those that work well for the speaker? From what I've read they do better at about 10" off the floor so legs to get it that high would be nice....but anything is better than the floor. I dont have time right now to build full stands. Just want to get some legs others have used that look good (cute midcentury look that the wife likes) and are sturdy. Thanks!

Ampzilla (was: DQ-10 What is the recommended power input?) 5
In July of 1974, Ziff-Davis Publishing Company hired me, a recent Electrical Engineering graduate, to be the Assistant Technical Editor of Popular Electronics magazine (PE). While I was at PE, I worked under the supervision of Leslie Solomon, who was the Technical Editor, and Art Salsberg, who was the Editorial Director. Eventually, Leslie was given the title of Technical Director, and I became the Technical Editor. While I worked at PE, I attended the night session of a Law School in New York City. I left PE in July of 1981 to begin my legal career. The seven years that I spent at PE were very rewarding. I worked on many interesting projects, including Ampzilla. Ampzilla was offered in kit form, and PE's cover story described the construction of the amplifier, provided the schematic and parts lists, and provided the results of performance measurements on the finished product. I had the opportunity to deal directly with the authors of the construction articles, including such folks as Ed Roberts of MITS (which offered the Altair 8800 micro-computer), George Meyerle (who offered calculators and other items in kit form), Forrest Mims, Don Lancaster, and many others, including James Bongiorno. It was a wonderful experience. I consider myself to have been very fortunate to have been hired and to have been able to work at PE for those seven years. My only regret in retrospect is that I did not avail myself of the opportunity to have gotten an Ampzilla or two at the time. Just before I left PE, I acquired my mirror-image DQ-10s directly from the factory, along with a pair of DQ-1W and an LP1 active crossover. The woofer surrounds have been replaced once, the crossover capacitors have been upgraded, and the grill covers have been replaced. The Dahlquists still sing. DQ 10 Grills? 10
Hello everyone, In my quest to constantly improve my system, I removed the grills from my DQ 10’s, thinking there would be a noticeable improvement in SQ, given the metal mesh, used to form the curve in the face of the covers, must be a hindrance to the sound presentation. Well, to my surprise, it seems like there’s more clarity without the grills, but the sound stage seems smaller and the sound less dimensional - it seems almost as if the grill plays a roll in the presentation. Now, to be fair, I only removed the grills today, but have been listening all weekend and my tinnitus is now acting up. In any case, I thought I’d post this question to the group: what are your listening experiences with the grills removed and how do you listen, with them on, or off? Any and all info appreciated, Thanks, John

Jon Dahlquist 6
I posted about five years ago after I talked to a Grado engineer who worked for JD. He stated he had spoken to JD the week before, stated he wasn’t doing well. The guys name was Chen. He said he had 10’s in his office to this day. I wouldn’t bother Mr. Dahlquist. It would be at the very least an unwanted intrusion.

Recapping M909
I’ve recapped M905’s, M907 and DQM-9c’s with good results but I have a pair of M909s that I would like to recap but the values are worn off on the capacitors. Does anyone have schematics for the crossovers? -- *Yori*

DQ-20 replacements
Can anyone suggest a list to the following questions: For both the DQ-20 and the DQ-20i 1) What were the original drivers? I know small companies tend to change components during production, so to get the best answer, the DQ-20 serial numbers are in the 20-02400 range, and the DQ-20i in the 007900 range 2) What are the currently available best replacements for each of the three drivers (from Madisound or other good speaker component supplier)?

DQ10 crossover board that is an actual circuit board 6
As mentioned in another post, I recently acquired another pair of DQ10. The serial numbers are missing, they are not factory mirrored and weirdly the crossover boards are actual, nicely built circuit boards but with the usual yellow caps and 80uf electrolytic. The previous owner claims to have sent the speakers back to Dahlquist maybe 15 years ago for service but is this part of an upgrade or were there some that came from the factory like this? I haven't seen it before and have seen no images of this online. Also--just curious about other people's experience with tweeter replacement-upgrades, etc. I am currently experimenting with Dayton AMT drivers. Kind of beautiful in their own way, spacious, but not really quite right even when padded down where they need to be. I have previously used the scan speak D2010 and thought those were awesome but a little pricey. Is it true that the Visaton that looks like the original actually sounds better than the original once ferrofluid is removed? Just curious, I will probably order them and try them but just wonder if others have any opinions about them.

DQM-9 Crossover Schematic 2
I’m preparing to recap my DQM-9s as they are original and was wondering if anyone has a crossover schematic or parts list? Would prefer ordering parts before I pull the speakers apart. Thanks.
