Invitation to join [email protected]
Peter Bowers
Hello,
I would like to invite you to join the RAILbid mailing list and apologize to all of you who get multiple copies of this message. The description of this mailing list is: RAIL bid is a place where you can sell or auction off railway memorabilia, models, books, timetables, Equipment registers, etc etc. The list is set up so the seller lists his items for sale or bid and replies of offers and bids go directly to the seller not the whole list. The seller is responsibile for posting the current bid to the list once a day for the period of time the auction is on, generally 7-10 days. This is an experimental list to see how well such a list is accepted by the sellers and bidders. It is moderated to assure messages are acceptable to the format. Hopefully it will be well received!! You can join this list by going to the following web page: or To join by email send an empty message to <mailto:RAILbid-subscribe@...> If you do not wish to join this list, please ignore this message. Re: Unit train coal haulers

Manny:
Unfortunately it looks like the days of the great SD40-2 have ended for unit coal service. The last SD40s on 800 series coal trains I saw were in 1995, back when the 9500 AC4400s were new and didn't have the locotrol systems installed yet. Unit sulfur trains operated into 1997 with the SD 40s but have since converted to techno toasters as well. I have noticed on the car trace that very occassionally SD 9043s are mixed in to coal consists. I believe this is just a test situation and since you didn't want test information I left it out the first time. Circus Train
Sooke's
To all interested, (and if your not, please just 'delete' it!)
"We will be moving a Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus train (54 cars) across the territory from Romford to Pembroke on Tuesday June 22nd. It will likely go through North Bay in the evening stopping for a crew change only. The return trip will be going through North Bay likely in the evening on June 28th. We will be using CP power. Should be an interesting site." I received this info this morning from the GM RaiLink-Ottawa Valley. A little sketchy but if I get any thing else on it, I will pass it along! You can contact me of list if you prefer! I cross posted because there has been a lot of interest shown in this. I thought it would be informational to quite a few people! These units seem to be assigned to the StL&H, as I see them a lot in
Binghamton (on the D&H) and in Little Ferry (on the NYS&W). Bruce ---------- From: Bill Miller <bmiller@...>guess these are the last three so-painted units in revenue service eh?This is correct. ---------------------------------------------------------- |
FROM MY RECORDS-MEMORIES OF CPR-CANADIAN PACIFIC STEAMSHIPS LIMITED-IN THE MARITIMES-CIRCA -1955
Donald Scott <[email protected]
Canadian Pacific In The Maritimes-Circa-1955
Fan Trip To Norton, N.B. And Saint John, N.B. from Moncton-February 9, 1955 CPR Norton, N.B. Morning. At Norton, N.B. 4-4-0 136 was spotted inside CP's one-stall roundhouse with the weather about 5 below zero. Combination coach (wood)3269 was pulled up close to the locomotive shed. I then spotted the other railway (CN) early morning Saint John-Moncton-Charlottetown passenger train #44(this train number as far as Moncton) then changes to another train number Moncton-Cape Tormentine before going on ferry to Borden and Charlottetown)powered by 4-6-2 5273(no feedwater heater). This train picks up passengers from CPR's Montreal-Saint John train #39 arriving Saint John Union Station at 0645 which makes connections with CPR's "Bay of Fundy Service" 4,000 ton "Princess Helene" for Digby, N.S. connecting with CPR subsidiary Dominion Atlantic passenger trains #98 eastbound Yarmouth via Digby to Halifax, and westbound Halifax-Yarmouth passenger #95 usually with 9 cars and powered by G-2 Class 4-6-2's of 2500 and 2600 series. Getting back to CP at Norton, N.B., Nearby was A CP caboose used by engine and train crews-a home away from home, also a snow plow and grader. Shortly afterwards 4-4-0 136 backed out of the engine shed, and coupled onto wood combination coach 3269 and backed to the station-dead-end tracks for CP. The Norton station is used by both railways, although owned by CN. CP crews were busy loading mail, express and some bagge off CN eastbound train #44. CN train #43 passenger from Moncton to Saint John went westbound earlier. Again express, mail etc. being loaded. From Moncton, a lot of T-Eaton Company mail-order traffic being put aboard. All ticketing for CPR is done by the CN agent . At about 0900 or so 4-4-0 136 with its combination coach departed for Chipman, about a 44 mile run. Watched this train commencing climbing the grade out of Norton, with its good sounding whistle and clanging bell and bellowing lots of steam. Along the way 136 would do local work, picking up box cars and finally arriving Chipman anything from seven to eight cars. At Chipman heavier power and more cars on the mixed-passenger would be added and would continue to the Fredericton area(South Devon) with a 4-6-0 D-10 Class sometimes a 1100 series even to a 2-8-2 of 5200 series. Other 4-4-0s 29 and 144 being maintained at Chipman. Saint John, N.B. February 9, 1955. Late Morning. Thanks for the useful information, much appreciated! One final question though. Can we consider the age of exclusive SD40-2s on coal trains to be behind us now? =( Or does it still happen on occasion? Manny ----- Original Message -----
From: Doug Campbell <tumtum_99@...> Normally loaded coal trains operate 2 head end and one mid train slave AC4400's (west of Golden, B.C.) in the 9500 or 9600 series. Perhaps someone can correct this information for trains on the Windemere sub (south of Golden) |

The CPR makes a big mess with a train in Chelmsford, ON, and not a single
word is mentioned about it here? What a sorry excuse for a CPR list this one is. :) Anyway, as a result of the derailment CPR detoured some trains over CN between Boyne and Oba and between Boyne and Thunder Bay. PSB |
Re: Chelmsford
Thomas Sajnovic
well, not much really to say about it.
about 12 - 13 cars jumped the track about 3:30 - 4:00 in the morning, looking mostly from the photos of the news, mostly empty center beam flats were involved. some landing within about 50 feet from some people's homes!!. don't know much else about it, didn't really get a chance to venture out there for photos. Take care guys Tom Sajnovic |

Yes-- these were the same cars as Bill Saw. They were on the head end and I should have recorded the power (2 SD-40s and a SOO SD-60). On another note, I see those SD-60s weigh 3000 lbs less than an SD40-2. Are they on a longer frame or do they just look like it because the hood is longer?? Doug Hately |
Unit train coal haulers
Doug Campbell
From: "Manny Jacob" <railbus@... Barring any tests, what is the default coal car for >British Columbiacoal trains at the time? The normal car for most unit coal trains is still the CPR style bathtub coal hopper in the 3 height versions. These cars are usually not sorted into groups based on the height variations. Depending on the customer's requirements the cars will be CP or Procor. These are black with multimark, black without multimark, action red (covered in coal dust so red is usually hard to pick out), or in the case of the Procor cars, black with white Procor lettering and dimi data. Usually the Procor sets operate as one complete train but there are instances where the odd Procor car is mixed in with the CP sets. There is at least one unique set of Johnstown aluminum cars with ALMX reporting marks, leased from the Transisco Railway company. These are aluminum in colour with yellow rotary ends and black ends on the other side. Another Procor set operates with the Johnstown Areoflow cars (no external ribs are visible) with UNPX reporting marks. These are also aluminum with yellow rotary ends and black on the other. I have been noticing that there are a few old style coal cars mixed in various sets and these cars look like the rebuilt bathtubs that the Sultran sulfur trains are using. These old cars carry CP reporting marks without any titles or multimarks and look pretty much the worse for wear. Last year there was a set of SOO coal cars looking like the Johnstown coal porters in BC coal service. These cars where black with white markings and a white stripe to mark the rotary end. I don't think these where actually the Johnstown cars. As well, what is the normal motive power >configuration for thesetrains at this present time?Normally loaded coal trains operate 2 head end and one mid train slave AC4400's (west of Golden, B.C.) in the 9500 or 9600 series. Perhaps someone can correct this information for trains on the Windemere sub (south of Golden) Empties operate often without the midtrain slave or have it moved to the front. Another common summer configuration is for only one AC4400 on the point with a single midtrain slave. I believe this varies according to the power balance between Roberts bank and the mines. Northern Ontario AC power flurry. :)
Wayne Regaudie
Hi folks!,
Seems after a bit of a lul in "big power", AC traction activity is back up on the Mactier/Parry Sound sub. See the lineup for today (May 26) on Mile 77 and check out trains 401, 407, 403, 404, 406 and 412. Also, with the brake probs fixed, more 90MACs are showing up (leading). In a way, I like the little gaps when the power reverts back to the SD40-2s. Keeps it from getting boring and help keep from taking the new AC stuff for granted.
