Re: Unit train coal haulers

Manny:

Unfortunately it looks like the days of the great SD40-2 have ended for
unit coal service. The last SD40s on 800 series coal trains I saw were
in 1995, back when the 9500 AC4400s were new and didn't have the
locotrol systems installed yet. Unit sulfur trains operated into 1997
with the SD 40s but have since converted to techno toasters as well.

I have noticed on the car trace that very occassionally SD 9043s are
mixed in to coal consists. I believe this is just a test situation and
since you didn't want test information I left it out the first time.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the useful information, much appreciated!
One final question though.

Can we consider the age of exclusive SD40-2s on coal
trains to be behind us now?
=(

Or does it still happen on occasion?

Manny
