The wind socks are there so if there is an emergency, (IE: A tank of annhydrous

Does anyone know why the rails would maintain a wind sock? Are there any
railroad employees out there who can tell us why this is of use to them? I
would've thought the wind factor was rather obvious to anyone on the ground?

Other trivia....seems the CP dynamometer car is still at Smiths Falls

I'd like to adapt that event to our group, and have selected Saturday, May

Hello,
Can anyone tell me where the Lake Erie & Northern station was
located in Waterford Ontario? Was it shared with the Canada Southern?
This past november I travelled there to photograph the remains of the
railways located there (CASO, LE&N, TH&B) and I couldnt find the

Fw: Secret CPR "Chinese" trains

Doug Rhodes

Hello all

A couple of weeks ago I asked the list about a dinner time story I had
heard about massive movements of Chinese workers in secret trains
during World War 1 (see note below). Although there were no responses
on the list, those I spoke with privately were doubtful, as was I. How
could such a massive operation with so many "juicy" details have
occurred without a lot of talk amongst railroaders and railfans over
the years?

Well, I don't know the answer to the latter question, but I've no doubt
now that the secret Chinese trains existed. I found an article in "The
Beaver" magazine about these trains:

Secret trains across Canada 1917-1918. Elizabeth A. Tancock. il. Vol.
71, No. 5, (O-N '91): p39-43

The article is based on the author's research at National Defense, the
National Archives and conversation with at least one surviving
participant in the operation. There's enough detail (including even
which military personnel used which berths in the tourist car at the
end of each train!) to verify the movements really occurred, right down
to names of the ships used, coded telegrams about arrivals, generic
train consists, names of commanding officers etc.

There are also some photos. The only photo in which one of the trains
is visible is too small to get the locomotive number, but it appears to
be a heavy 4-6-2 with Elesco feedwater heater and long haul (6 wheel)
tender. I don't know my steam engines well enough to ID the class from
this photo.

Based on the vast scale of the operation there must be significant
amounts of information in the CPR archives on the train movements,
support logistics etc, but I would not know where to begin to find out
more. I do know that the military records were declassified in the
mid-1980's, so the records should no longer be "secret" - just hard to
get to.

More info may be found in the cited article, or I can provide more if
anyone is interested.

Hello all

Last night at dinner some one asked me to provide some info about the
secret CPR trains used to move Chinese labourers across Canada during
World War I. I couldn't, but I think I know some folks who maybe
could!

Apparently the CPR moved about 84,000 Chinese labourers from
Manchuria
to the Western front in France to relieve "our boys" of grunt work
like
digging trenches and hauling ammunition. They were brought over in CP
ships to quarantine at William Head near Victoria, then by CP
steamers
to Vancouver, where they boarded sealed trains of colonist cars, two
armed guards per car. They were only let out for air in remote areas
where no one could see them and escape attempts would be futile (and
probably fatal). They were put on CP ships on the east coast and
transported to France. After the war the whole process was executed
in
reverse, with a fine to the CPR of $1000 per head for any Chinese
worker not returned to China. Everyone concerned was sworn to secrecy
about the whole operation, which involved dozens of trains.

Well that's the dinner-time story, anyways. Does anyone on the list
know anything about this, or where it might have been written up in a
publication?

Although this message has nothing to do with the CPR or the CNR, I would
like to invite any and all to come by and say hello if you are at the
Toronto Model RR show this weekend (tomorrow and Sunday). I will be at the
Athabasca Scale Models table, and while this message has nothing to do with
the CPR or the CNR, rest assured that Athabasca Scale Models produces many
products that are representations of equipment seen on both the CPR and CNR.

This is not a commercial message as I will not be selling any products, nor
do I work for ASM, I am just helping out a person that has become a friend

Hello Gang

I am looking for decals for SD90MAC's. Does Microscale have decals for the 90MAC's yet. Any help would be appericated. I am thinking of doing a SD90MAC for CP (when the income tax cheque comes back). Also I would like to do a AC4400CW for CP with the new truck design (radial steer). Does Details West make the sideframes yet for the AC's.

Thanks In Advance

railway remains (TH&B, LE&N, CASO) and I couldn't figure out where
the station was located.

CP Could Be Expanding More On The International Scene

Donald Scott

Re my Messages B#81 and B#82 of March 16.

Correction:
It was brought to my attention by Rainer Auer that CP could be
interested in SCI and another company Concor. Concor is correct. SCI is
not Seacontainers International, but SCI symbol stands for "Shipping
Corportation of India".

SCI and Concor both are companies the Indian government is trying to
reduce its holdings in. The Indian government owns 80% of SCI, and wants
to sell at least 40% of it. The Indian government owns 77% of Concor. CP
Ship's owned Contship Containerlines could be taking and equity stake in
both the state-owned shipping companies.

In B#82 I stated that BNSF is being fined $10 million for false
statements, this has nothing to do on rail-mergers but between a family
and a BNSF wreck. I won't go into detail.

This clears up some inacurate information on my two late evening Posts
of last night.

Pertaining To Rail Mergers -#B-81

Donald Scott

Pertaining to Rail-Mergers:
In the news today March 16, BNSF was fined $10 Million U.S. for
supplying the Surface Transportation Board during hearings last week in
Washington, D.C. BNSF gave the STB "False Information"-presume this
applies to the talked about BNSF/CN deal.

Likely CN will also be fined by the STB giving false information.

Canadian Pacific International Expansion Could Be Coming-B#80

Donald Scott

Canadian Pacific Could Be Buying Or Having Interests In British SCI(Sea
Containers International) and A Stake In India's Concor.

Heard today March 16, CP could be taking up a stake or takover of
British(Bermuda based) Sea Containers Ltd., a diversified passenger
transport company, coastal ferries in UK, Scotland, Ireland, from
Uk-France, Scandinavian luxury ferries built like cruise ships, plying
the waters between Norway-Sweden-Finland-Denmark-Germany-Estonia. Sea
Containers Ltd. operates port facilities in Britain.

In the railway passenger business it owns Great Western Eastern which
operates 115 passenger trains on a normal working day including service
to Scotland, and plans adding more trains to its rail-passenger
business.

Sea Containers- owns the "Silja Line" which plies routes on the Baltic.
The company operates the World's largest fast ferry fleet, 16 craft,
plus 11 coventional ferries on 23 routes from 11 countries.

Sea Containers Ltd. manages the" Great South Pacific Express" tourist
train in Australia between Brisbane-Cairns.
Sea Containers owns "Orient Express Hotels" who actually manages the
above train. The hotel subsidiary operates 35 hotels-Four in the South
Pacific, five in South Africa, two in Southeast Asia, four in South
America, six in North America, eleven in Europe, three in the United
Kingdom.

Concor:
From what I understand India based(New Delhi based) "Container
Corporation of India" provides rail-container movements from major
Indian ports to and from inland terminals on Indian Railways.

Other CP News:
New SD90-h 6,000 hp was observed at Port CoquitlamB.C. diesel shop
whcich had arrived from Revelstoke, B.C. approx. 0700. And was due to go
back east later today on train #402

Former CPR Modern Light 4-6-2 1293:
News today say's ex CP light modern G-5 Class 1293(built 1948) could be
slated returning to Canada from tourist excursion railway Ohio Central.
Locomotive 1293 is supposed to be slated for the new Pacific Wilderness
Railway, a new Victoria, B.C. excursion railway that will commence
operations this June from Victoria north to Malahat Pass and return
oveer a two hour run. Three trains will operate the service nothbound
and southbound per day. Trains are supposed to operate with 11 cars.
Two of their GP-10 units were spotted at Port Coquitlam today units
#705, #706. Heavy-weight passenger cars were supposed to be in the yard
also-but hidden away.

Sat. May 13th 2000 - 1st Annual "Day on the C-P-R"

Bill Miller

Good evening folks:

As some of you are aware, for the last five years members of the CNet list
have held an annual get together at Bayview Jct.,ON to watch trains, and
more importantly, to put faces to the names they correspond with all the
time. It is always an event to look forward to and enjoy.

I'd like to adapt that event to our group, and have selected Saturday, May
13th, 2000 (being the closest date to the list's anniversary 5/16/99). At
the suggestion of Paul Bloxham (founder of CNet meets), Galt,ON has been
selected for this year's event. Located at MP57 on the Galt Subdivision,
20 or more trains pass daily, with many working at Galt. The CPR's Grand
River job also runs Saturdays more often than not.

To get to the Galt station, go south (about 5 miles) on Hwy.24 from the
Hwy.401 exit until you go under the mainline and then make an immediate
left. Ample parking is available and Horny Tim's is right up the street.
In the evening, I envision beautiful westbound bridge shots from
Riverbluffs Park on the west side of the Grand River, something like
". Hopefully
the CPR will co-operate.

To enable some participation from those out of reasonable range, I'd like
to compile a OS report entailing what everyone sees (or is running) on this
day. Hopefully we'll see one or more of our members go by. :)

Re: PACIFIC WILDERNESS RAILWAY COMPANY LTD.

Joe Smuin

Hello all:

I'm just back from a quick visit to the Coquitlam yard. The two GP10s
are indeed there, looking to my eye more like circus train units. I
understand the provincial railway inspector had a gleam in his eyes
after going over them, so this ought to be interesting. The coaches
were parked in the distance, I didn't get a close look at them.

Next track over, 9300 was sitting in a long line up of units. A certain
employee revved her up to see what she sounds like. Alas, the chant is
gone! 9300 is just another rap artist, though a much quieter one than
the usual. She rumbles and hicups just like a GE, though quieter, but
sounds like a very ladylike Alco when cranked up. Lots of smoke too
after she'd been sitting. She apparently is headed east tonight on 402
as a trailing unit, so you guys east of Revelbush ought to see her
tomorrow.

Also saw the 3005 sitting there in her nice, two-tone green paint. They
left the bell a canary yellow, which to my eye, is a real nice touch.

The equipment for this new tourist excursion railway is currently in
Vancouver and is expected to arrive in Victoria on the 25th of March
about 16:00. My informant says their are two GP10 locos and at least
eleven coaches. Trains are to be made up of eleven cars including
standard coaches, deluxe coaches, and a parlour car. Trains depart
from the VIA station in downtown Victoria next to the Johnson Street
bridge ( the blue bridge ). A platform is to be constructed across
the bridge to facilitate loading of passengers. There will be 3
trains a day beginning Saturday, 17 June 2000, departing Victoria at
09:00 - 12:00 - 15:00. Each trip is about 2 hours and fifteen
minutes. Trains will travel up the Malahat then return. The fare for
an open-window heritage coach is $29. Canadian adult return, $19.
children ages 6 - 12. Deluxe coach, $34. and $24. respectively, First
Class Parlour Car $79. including beverage and snacks. Plans call for
steam engine power next year, possibly CP 1293, now on the Ohio
