Re: No uploads - support replied

There is at least one online service for making contributions to creators of web content. It's called Patreon. . The minimum contribution is $1.00 USD. It's used by a lot of YouTube creators and other artists, writers, etc. Dave Jones of EEVBLOG uses it. Either Farhan or Hans could set it up. Out of more than three thousand subscribers to this group, $120 per year should be easy.

Regarding ways to delete or lower the storage burden, I would hate to see the attachment feature go. It's one of the great features of Groups.io. With Yahoo, when a poster referred to a photo, it was a PITA to go to the Yahoo site to look at it. Having it right in the post itself is the most natural way. It's how we usually do our emails for other purposes.

Regarding the files section, with some exceptions I have not found it to be particularly useful when it was at Yahoo, mostly because there was no way to search it with keywords, and no organization to the folders and files themselves. Generally, folders were/are named for the contributor, i.e., by call sign, rather than by content and with no way of knowing what's in them except by opening them up and rooting around. Often folders and files would be created as addenda to a specific post or thread, but outside of that original context have little meaning or value. I have not yet looked to see if files and folders can be searched by keyword in Groups.io. I hope so, as it would make a money contribution to support it a no-brainer.

It might also be worthwhile to consider combining "photos" and "files" into one section. A photo is just a file, a document like any other form. I'm not sure there's a reason to distinguish between JPG documents and PDF, DOC, XLS, or any other type.

Hi all

Farhan is boss here. I am only in charge of the QRP Labs group ;-) ? I just happen to technically be owner of the YahooGroups forum since the beginning, because when Farhan published his BITX20 design in 2004 I loved it and suggested to Farhan starting a YahooGroup... he said go ahead, and the rest is history. So I'll leave it with Farhan to decide how to go forward with it.?

Meanwhile I'll see if I can free up the "attachments" part of the storage. That should buy some time at least.?

I notice on /static/pricing that paying 10$/mo only gets you 10GB of storage, not a huge increase from 1GB.

Maybe a Raspberry Pi with a hard drive and a fixed IP via a DynDNS account would work to store all the old files/photos so they could still be accessed.

I deleted them as a start to help cleanup and I assume you as well.

Once we have space back, I can re-upload, but smaller file sizes.

I like that idea. ?Archive all stuff as is somewhere else, then start fresh. ?Somebody who has been around for awhile copies over anything that matters, like schematics and instructions for older rigs. ?And we have guidelines for what's appropriate to put in the new files section. ?Maybe a tmp directory, for stuff like pictures of you unwrapping the package from hfsigs? ?Maybe somebody maintains an index file, pointing to stuff in the file section they think matters, with the number of the post in the message section that might need to accompany it?

Perhaps start a new group: bitx40? ?Leave bitx20 to the build-from-scratch folks?

As is, there's way too much clutter to find stuff that matters. ?Having a max of 1gig hovering over us could help keep things findable. ?When somebody asks "what component values should I use for 80 meters", a response of "Just look in the files section" is currently not very helpful.

I see that the minima mailing list archive has all attachments stripped from postings. ?That includes html. ?Some posts were sent as html instead of straight ascii text, those have now been lost to posterity.

As to the BITX40, I have already purchased 3 and given one away. Tomorrow, I am proposing it as a club build, so hopefully there will be some orders to support Ashhar's efforts in India, as I'm sure some will choose to build it. I am also making it the core of my talk at FDIM ("Give Your QRP Rig a Facelift") and I'm working on two supplemental PCB's that will hold a 2.4" TFT display, CW, keyer, an (RF) AGC, S meter, battery voltage, all managed with a rotary encoder-base menuing system via a Mega 2560 Pro Mini. The encoder, AD9850, and Mega will be on one board that plugs into the display. The external circuitry for the rest will be on a Muppet board so the user can pick and implement the feature set they want.

Is this fun stuff or what?

I don't think the bitx is worth buying more expensive measurement equipment for. What I got shows the bitx has promising signs of life. But I'll pass a note on to Santa for better equipment.

Hans:

Write to Group and ask them the cost of an unrestricted perpetuity site plan. That is, unlimited storage forever. I have no clue what it might be, but let's say is $2000. If everyone here contributed a dollar, we'd be done with it. Require new members to remit a dollar when they join. Alternatively, find out what some level of storage is that you estimate we'll need for the next couple of years, divide that by the members and we pay it to a PayPal account, from which you secure the storage. New members pay up front.
