Re: New version of TFT Touchscreen based VFO-BFO for uBitx

Robert McClements

Hi Kevin,

The VU2SPF solution uses the MCUfriend type low cost touch tft which plugs straight into the Mega 2650 rather than the serial Nextion display.

Perhaps a future schedule could include a CW/RTTY calling frequency so that Technician Class licensees can participate.

BITX QSO Afternoon/Evening, Sunday, August 26, 3PM & 7PM Local Time, 7277 kHz in North America, 7177 kHz elsewhere.

Join us as we make contacts with our BitX-40s or uBitXs or anything else on 7.277 MHz in 40 meters!

This is a worldwide event for BitX40 (and other QRP)?stations starting at 3PM and 7pm in each time zone. To participate, call CQ BitX on Sunday, starting at?3PM and/or 7PM?your local time. The BitX QSO Night continues through the evening and conditions usually improve after sunset, so it is worthwhile to participate later in the evening.

Suggested Best Operating Practices:

Work at QRP power levels unless conditions require more power.
Call and listen for CQ BITX on the hour and every quarter hour.
It is helpful if you call CQ BITX with your callsign, name and location.?
Repeat your callsign a number of times during your CQ BITX and during QSO's.
Start a QSO by confirming the callsign, location, name and signal report of the other operator.
Say the callsign, name and location of the other operator so others can hear.
If the frequency is busy, avoid long conversations.
After your initial QSO is complete, ask if there are any other stations who would like to contact.

Report your QSO's, discuss propagation, noise, signal reports, audio reports, antenna type, etc. in this thread.

This is an undirected, scheduled event.? The BITX QSO Night relies on you to call CQ BITX to initiate contacts with other stations, so warm up that final and transmit a few calls on Sunday evening.? Talk to you then!

I see Darren, thank you very much for your quick reply.
I thought it was possible to scale as a whole at once for who knows to do mods.
Hope someone who has 3.5'' regular nextion display makes it...

Thanks Ron,?
We're not planning any DSP audio additions in the foreseeable future though. ?Jack Purdum, ?W8TEE has all that nicely implemented in his "Jackal" board and we don't want to butt competitive heads with his group. ?They should have their system available before too long, I'd hope. ?There's room for all of us and different niches to fill. ?

CEC's Nextion is OK but we didn't want to be tied to something that's only "Single Source" and also requires a connection to a computer and a "manager" program to be fully functional. ?That just doesn't allow for much innovation and progress,

Perhaps what I am envisioning is a departure from the uBitx basic architecture, since by resorting to DSP at audio frequencies, the whole 2nd. IF system and the Xtal filter may no longer be needed. However, if we take an evolutionary and open source approach to the art, there is no reason to be limited by the base architecture and as Frahan already expressed, open source is all about participation and contribution for moving the art forward.

uBitx success

Hi,

I have completed my planned modifications for my radio by taming that million decibel sidetone (with surgical implant) and have successfully installed the CEC software. I am getting the hoped for results. Thanks to KD8CEC for the effort he put in and to him and all the others with helpful comments on getting it all running. I found quite a few stumbling blocks getting, installing, and running all the pieces but at each step I just looked up what people have already posted about it and made it all the way to the end:)

I'll still be around to help in whatever small ways I can and watching the progress of the internal filter mods. When something usable comes along I will probably install it in my radio.

Updated the T9, T10, and T11 photos ...The SA used has a lower bandwidth of 10 Mhx, therefore the 80 meter and 40 meter results were misleading
Sorry for the confusion

Q90 fried

Lightning took out Q90 on my uBitx.? Also fried the switching power supply I was using.? Antenna is in the attic but Q90 still got zapped. Others have reported similar frying of Q90 due to lightning.
Didn't have a 2n3904 so replaced it with MMBT2222A.? Working OK now.

Re: Wow... 15 volts in and a bunch out..

Hi Bo,

One definition of an expert is "a has been drip under pressure" (ex-spurt) - :)

About that notice of violation comment - I am not so sure about other countries but FCC is not going to send a team of commandos to your house and haul you away to a gulag in some remote desert. They are not going to confiscate your dog, your pickup truck, your family, and your morning coffee. They send you a letter that tells you what they 'heard on the air', and when. You have more than thirty seconds (is it thirty days?) to answer them in writing explaining what you think happened and more - what you are going to do to prevent it happening again. That seems pretty reasonable to me. There are a lot of acceptable things that could be in that explanation and remedy. They'll be happy. You may be in the market for a new radio or a repair to the "offending" gear.

As for me I already know I need to use an external filter until more elegant repairs can be made. If that is not good enough I will retire the uBitx to receive-only duties in the shack and some service on the workbench. Power amplifiers disabled (remember that funny little brown wire?) to assure no further incidents. So far we have no reports from the concentration camps of disasters befalling anybody using a uBitx :)

Relax and enjoy your life :)

If you get a violation notice, get a new radio, don't complain.

I'm happily using one and just tinkering with another just to refresh my

Note on the 15v mod. I've ordered a mean well supply adjustable from

Ashhar..

Thank you for all you do. I believe in? line 5 of your instructions there is a typo.. "Replace 97", should be "Replace R97".

I have been keenly interested in "leveling the Transmitter output" across the bands, for appropriate reasons.

Because of component costs of surface mount components, I am expecting someone to put together a "kit of parts" for this mod. I may even contemplate this- HOWEVER - FIRST- I think a number of Beta testers need to shake this down on the air for a few months. I am prepping for a? 2000 mile car trip ahead of me in September. As we're at the bottom of the Sun spot cycle, things are going to get better all the time so this mod will be welcomed.

If there is an interest in a "mass purchase" of this mod, PLEASE do not clutter the FORUM- PRIVATE MAIL ME. include with or without a pair of RD16HHF...
I will form a list to advise everyone if we get enough interest OR if someone else wants to offer the mod Kit - everyone is welcome - ain't going to get rich.? Private Email me at am_fm_radio (at) yahoo (dot) come? - Place "uBITX XMIT mod kit" in the subject line.

Re: Wow... 15 volts in and a bunch out..

Bo Barry

You're referring to the regulator on the Randuino? ?I'm considering adding a resistor to cool the 7805.?
Measure the voltage ACROSS the resistor and the input to the 7805 to ground and report back.
Surprised a 1/4w worked.
I guess this needs to be done for both versions, the one with the LCD display and without with the Nextion display.

Thanks Bo W4GHV?
